Indeed, what Z said. Here are a couple of links in the Docs to help you with expanding the size of your grid to draw on. Make yourself a nice 70x100 page or something like that, plenty of squares to work with (you can always expand it more later too). You can change the background color (A nice dark grey is a good place to start), the grid line color (a nice light grey works), square grid or hex, change the measurements (often 5 feet per square for a battle mat). You can draw shapes (solid or outlined). I highly recommend learning the POLYGON tool.
