New to Tabletop but not to Roleplaying

Hey everyone! I stumbled upon your site while at work. I've been searching for a game I can play while I sit here at work. I'm in the navy, and some days I have sit on the ship for duty and I don't have much to do. So, I needed something that would play in the browser and Google lead me here, so hopefully this works. Anyways, I've never really played dice-based tabletop, but I have played a bunch of chat roleplay since 1997 in yahoo, and a lot of newer MMORPGs. I consider myself a good fantasy writer, but I don't know if that kind of writing goes on in games like this. I understand that you have to roll to get your stats, and I understand you have to roll to do actions and the sort, but like I said I've never really played a game like this. So, I'm just looking for someone who has a game going on and would take a newer person like me on and show me the ropes. Let me add, if these games are strictly live then I'm slightly limited at times so I will need to figure out what times games are usually played. Could someone also point in the direction of a place I could find dice based role playing communities where the game play goes down in forums or chat rooms and is not as scheduled oriented.
http://www.myth-weavers.com and http://www.thetangledweb.net both have forum-based roleplay options (more so the latter than the former). Roll20 uses a virtual tabletop that requires all the players to be present, so if your times aren't consistent this may not be for you. You can still do the dice-based role playing in a forum setting, you just have to hope everyone is honest with their rolls. You'll also need a set of dice or a dice roller. Wizards of the Coast (the company that makes Dungeons and Dragons now) has an excellent dice roller here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm It will do a lot of the work for you, so that's nice :) Hope this helps some!
Thanks a lot, I'll be sure to check them out. It seems I can't open up the client in this computer's browser anyways (dang computers are stuck in the dark ages) but I still have interest in trying this out at home. I would possibly be interested in a once a week thing, maybe sundays or something around 3 pacific time if anyone is doing that.
