gais i have an idea

ok so what if there was another way to get xp and or gold but out of game? the games usually happen once a week and its kind of hard to level my characters so what if you could do something that had to do with the game to get xp and or gold ? like maybe write out a good story for your character be it background or present or make some complete level one character so people that just joined the group can choose to eather make their own or pick a already made lvl 1 character? its just an idea tell me if its a good one
This is a great idea, and I approve heartily. The story thing is good, but making level 1 characters? Way too easy: I once challenged myself to make a level 1 of each class, took me 1 weekend not including Essentials. As for the story, perhaps the GMs can judge them. Both my characters already have backstories.
when i said lvl 1 char i meant with a background story flavor and everything, if it looks orignial and interesting to play then you should be rewarded for it and i dont just mean backstory maybe you could also have some kind of journal where you would write the story of what happeend in the session in your characters point of view .. that would really help people to understand their character and get better at roleplaying since they would be looking at the fight from a different perspective idk its just an idea
I can see it now: "Some random turtles and mushrooms invaded the city" ... "The afterlife seems nice" ... "I dislike Boggles" ... "Never underestimate a pixie" little lessons you can jot down that your character has learned.
yes yes yes ^ i wish there was a like a comment function here
Certain classes, particularly the Artificier, can craft items for free which you can in turn go and sell. Even though you won't make much the profit you make will add up since you have all the time in the world during your character's "off" time in the guild. Why our good friend Markov (who shows up every other month lol) crafts items for players who can afford it and sells the rest for a theoretically infinite supply of money. Oh, but if you're trying to get free XP outside of combat git' outta here! XD
my idea wasnt exacly free xp =/ that would be no fun
Correction: As an Artificer, you need to actually show up for games, and then purposefully sit out of them, using game time to craft the item. You can't just make anything willy-nilly. Under Rule #2 of the "Rules on Items!" thread: Logistics: If you want to use the ritual to make an item for yourself or another person, you have to show up at the beginning of a session, say "I am going to make [this item] for [this character]," and then you must sit that session out, since you will be using your in-game time to craft the item in the guild hall. The person for whom you are crafting it cannot use that item until the next session he/she plays. ...But yeah, about character traits, you can put them on your own sheet and make that part of your personality, that's totally fine. But I don't see it as something you can get XP from, since it's something that actually happened to you. Like, Tawny hates Boggles too. If she ever sees one again, she is going to immediately flip her shit and go for the throat. Maybe a DM would reward Roleplay XP for it, but it's kind of a rare deal.
i dont mean traits but like write out actual stories of maybe some stuff that happened to your character before .. or a adventure he was on before he joined the guild and we could turn in those papers for xp and gold in game and attatch it to our character or something else it dousnt have to be this i just want a way to be able to get xp and gold while not in game .. not for free though obviosly lol i just want to level my character but usually there is only one session a week and it makes things complicated it feels like ill never be able to join the high level sessions =/

I thought you'd say "I'm crafting" and then take your secondary character out for a spin.
Oh, that's what you mean Erico, I think I misunderstood at first. Yeah I see what you're saying, honestly I think the only real solution is get more GMs. Eric and Geno are the only ones that have put any together lately, so the irregular 1-2 a week is kind of rough. =( With my own schedule, Monday, (most) Thursdays, and Friday are no good for me, so I'm kinda restricted myself. Heck, maybe some day I'll try to put together some game templates myself, give it a shot if they let me. Some day... ha ha. And Peter, that second paragraph is word-for-word what I pulled from the "Rules on Items" thread by Matt. So what you said sounds like it would work, as long as you're not playing -that- character and there's still a session. =)
Indeed, makes me wonder if I should reroll my secondary character into an artificier lol.
I was thinking reroll something into Artificer after reading that, but then I remembered I don't like the whole concept of the class. In other news: can we buy Wondrous Lair Items for use in the guild? Also, do we master any ritual we learn between sessions, or do we take session time to do that as well?
Pretty sure artificers have to be a certain level to make other certain level things, so you'd need to play it a bit before all that becomes available. =p And I'm not sure Rynce, on either of those questions. If you mean the usual rituals you get on level up (as a wizard for example), I believe most of them you can just put in your spell book directly, since most of them you automatically learn at certain levels, if I'm not mistaken.
It normally takes the same cast time to learn a ritual, but because we are in a guild setting it is fine to just learn it automatically.
An aside to this discussion, from the Basic rules thread: "The one exception to this general rule is Artificers, who are not allowed strictly because the way their build works is not conducive to this style of campaign." It's far too easy to abuse mark of making and master crafter to game the item system. As for the general proposal of this thread: if you have a story to tell, ask about being a GM. You are welcome to make your background for your character as rich and detailed as you like, come up with stories about them, etc. but you don't get XP and gold for it out of session, sorry. I grade enough papers that I don't want to get more and decide their value in gold/XP.
