Gray jumped in for a listen-visit. It is Larry's Birthday and the whole group sang Happy Birthday To You song over Skype. Past Journal XP was awarded and caught-up. Editing This with plans to document the Journal XP that was approved in the chat. Opening Window For Journals Of July 28 Session We opened a whole new massive map of the Deep Marsh, Cold Marsh, Lizardman Colony, and Creole Swamp-People Village areas, using Roll20 Dynamic Lighting feature for the first time in this campaign. PC's accomplished various tasks in town too. Airen learned new spells and conjured a Wall Of Gloom befitting the edge of the Cold Swamp. Sandoval obtained new information from spies. Mora applies her local knowledge to find the truth. Torvald paid a visit to Kaz who resides in study at the Greek Temple area set aside for Kaz's shrine to the Morninglord. Horukh sees the Temple Of The Phoenix and experiences visions. The Egyptian clerics heal him from the fatal leech disease. Kryikh lurked in the trees and flew around, looking for dangers and spying on the dangerous new Silvery Kenku who appears to be steering the party into danger at every turn, not to mention the bizarre convulsions and religious ranting. Kryikh would be perplexed and outright disturbed.

Journal 7/28 After finalizing our preparations we headed in to the swamp once again - this time with the aid of the lizard samurai and Oceanus, the sea elf. We trudged on for hours with very few problems - only the one in my ear - all of fancy bird's questions about every thing he sees. It seemed that we were making good progress when we were ambushed by a number of forest trolls. While the group was engaged with one of these foul beasts another surprised me from behind! After taking a few of his blows head on I could feel the sweet - cold - whisper of death reaching out to me. Fearful for my life I casted a new powerful yet untested spell - wall of gloom - which was able to ward off the troll - with the assistance of Rhubarb - long enough for my companions to come to my aid. Fancy bird even proved quite helpful using some of his holy powers to heal my wounds. I must be more aware while in these swamps. The next ambush could be my last.
Continuing here from something Gold said in the Treasure thread: " Horukh -- The Noble Birdman plans to hire an accountant to tabulate his uncounted coinage reserves. He simply doesn't have the time to count his money, considering all these distracting visions and adventuring trepidation. Horukh also has a fair amount of money "on paper" at the House Of Coin. On the other side of the balance sheet, he retains various employees, henchmen, debtors, and beneficiaries, drawing regular pay-outs. " That's... actually really, really good. It's pretty much a perfect summation, in fact. Counts are the power-brokers, the movers and shakers, of nobility; a count has holdings small enough that they'll survive fine while he is away (if he is landed), and a count sometimes acts as a go-between when two houses are sour to each other, but must profit from each other. So there's a favor bank, and loans both out and in, and a lot of word of mouth. I think that Count Horukh probably has a rep as a sharp minded, kind hearted, trustworthy, and strange agent-of-change-at-large, and is especially beloved among the shippers and seafolk (since his love of naval architecture has given them profit and safety innovations, such as roller railings that thwart grappling hooks) (Roller railings are a real world thing BTW, used on freighters and tankers vs. Somali pirates. Even SAS commandos and Royal Marines were thwarted by them over 90 percent of the time, in live tests. Picture the top railing of a vessel, between each stanchion, as being a series of free-rolling long barrel segments about 40cm across. A grapple thrown to grab the railing, for boarding, just rolls right off, or worse, catches and holds---until weight is put on it). And, on a personal level in-character, yes, Horukh only has much he can do physically ( I treat his low CON as meaning he has poor endurance, and can work intensely at high function, but then must rest just as long afterwards ), so the summation of his support network is spot on. He doesn't have that network because he's lazy or above it all; he has it because he is compensating for weaknesses. A lot of people look as nobles as being real shit-heels, and some are, but I play a noble as someone with a great burden of responsibility. A Count isn't there to boss peasants around, he's there to make sure that hundreds or thousands of families stay protected and fed, at the cost of most of a Count's personal freedom. The "adventuring trepidation" I play is in part because of Superman Guilt: the time spent being Clark Kent isn't the time spent saving people as Superman. Horukh worries that being an adventurer means he will be unable to continue his other work and obligations. And like Clark Kent and Superman = The Count and The Adventurer, which one becomes the dominant identity?

Ventured deep into the swamplands - Slow progress - Party not accustom to rigorous travel Stopped for brief respite - Apprehensive - Something(s) lurk nearby - Mora scouts northern area Discovers a swamp troll! - Foul creature attacks - Charges towards Elves - Quickly countered - Blocked pathway Fierce melee battle ensued - While engaged more rise from water - Ambushed! - Tide of fortune sways Beast attempt to flank - Frog casts wall of "Gloom" - Holds one at bay - With axe & fire another troll is slain Fancy Bird - Turns battle - Healing and spells - Rescue party - Invigorated we deftly kill last two Hard earned victory... (Torvald has encounter trolls before. As a member of his clan's militia, he helped drive their raiding parties away. Trolls are generally not very intelligent. However, they are not to be underestimated; as all have insidious strength and regenerative powers. It is best to fight at range when possible and with copious amounts of fire/acid.)

Sandoval's Tales Unusual alliances Those swamps are a dangerous place. We quickly found out the swamp has some tricks of its own. Whether it is quick sand, leeches or just the water; everything should be approached as potentially deadly. On top of that, the place is festering with deadly animals. Crocodiles, Trolls, what else? Time for a trickster to employ some tricks. In a place like this, you take all the allies you can get. The Aquatic Elf was willing to join us, as long as we would ultimately help save his people from the Sharkmen. Well, I am sure we will get to that, when Sehanine becomes the Sun Goddess. Unfortunately, it seems I've lost my grasp on the Lizardmen. I couldn't convince the one I call Sissy to join us. I asked him to write me a letter to the Lizard King, that will hopefully grant us safe passage if we encounter any Lizardmen along the way. He was happy to do so, and to provide me with valuable information of what we might encounter in the swamp. I've decided not to share this information with the group. If Horukh would know what is waiting for him in the swamp, he will surely return to his office, lock it from the inside, and never talk to us again. The Lizardman Sissy seemed afraid. He only agreed to talking to me in a public place. I had Mora watching my back just in case, but he didn't pull any tricks on me. I figured I also need to reinforce my alliance with the party members. I sent each one of them a letter. Hopefully that scribe wrote down exactly what I said, and hopefully it will turn out to be the correct recipe for each of them. Torvald was the first to respond. I would be surprised if he hadn't, since I decided to share with him the rumour I had received from my Moles about mrs. Teva's meat pies. I knew he couldn't just let that go, and I've now instructed some of my Moles to find out more about this rumour. My hunch to buy oil in Portlandio already payed off when we ran into Trolls in the swamp. Torvald knew we had to use fire to burn the corpses, in order to prevent them from getting back up. My makeshift fire arrows worked fine, although I need to find a way to carry more of them with me. An afternoon in the swamp has left my quiver almost depleted. I foresee big threats in the future. And while I trust my bow, I will need every edge to stay alive out in the swamp. As a last resort, I decided to fix the dice I'm carrying. If I can't talk my way out of being captured or killed, maybe gambling will work. I took one of the sets of dice I'm carrying, and polished them in such a way that they should roll in my favor. I don't know when and how I'll use them yet, but best be prepared for the unexpected, is what I say.
What about Kryikh? I would have liked to have written something substantial about what K has been doing while y’all are adventuring in the swamps. But I just haven’t had time. Here are the bullet points: 1. He has undergone some extreme mood swings recently, from the elation of recovering some flying ability, and capturing the sea ghost, to the shock of seeing Horukh and the panic this induced. 2. Now he is over this initial panic, and he misses his friends. Encouraged by the friendly note he received from Sandoval, he decides he is being silly. He also wants to satisfy his natural curiosity about Horukh. 3. He has found out what he can about Horukh from talking to friends in town. Since Horukh is quite well known, Kryikh is able to form the conclusion that he is probably not a danger. As Horukh is a noble (his tongue is cut!) and obviously operating in high circles, Kryikh realizes that his own business with the Gray Claws would probably be of little interest to Horukh. Kryikh knows he is small fry in the kenku order of things. 4. He decides to meet up with party again. He is embarrassed by his actions, and doesn’t want to talk about his disappearance. He is anxious to find out more about Horukh, but primarily to get back to adventuring and find out more about the airbender and the possible involvement of other kenku.

Mora's Chronicle A Thief Levels Up These swamp trolls are treacherous. I can't believe it as I see one regenerate before my very eyes. Luckily Torvald knows their weakness is fire. We make quick work of the first before two more approach. I hid in shadows and made my first backstab. I grin when I see Horukh enter the fray to aid other members. With each battle, he becomes more heroic. Unsurprisingly I find the most gold in the Trolls' lair. This is a good haul. And now I feel... somehow more skilled. After that backstab, I feel like I know how to deliver more damage. I feel a greater vitality, and a bit more resistant to the dangers of the world. I'm ready to take on more!

DM responding to some July Journal comments! Mora , great quick picture for the week. I see the LEVEL UP icon, +. DING! Kryikh , great points about investigating / researching / watching out for the plots about the Airbender lady, and any additional Kenku. You gathered information that possibly some of the recently-arrived Monks at the Greek Temple may be, in fact, kenku wearing hooded cowls. It seems suspicious. The airbender lady has plagued the party at nearly every turn (but has she been seen in the swamp yet?). The nexus connecting Airbendress and Kenku was first seen in footprints on the sea cave beach beneath the abandoned mansion, later mentioned aboard the Sea Ghost by the Red Pirate Red, and then affirmed by the Pirate Captain and various evidence found on-ship. It seemed that some kind of Kenku had been a business partner with the Airbendress. So far, no sign of either in your swamp adventures. Sandoval , loaded dice --- those could be used in the Swamp Town if you choose to go there. The creole residents with roll them bones with you. Torvald , this summary is good for our immediate upcoming adventures, theme of the next 3 weeks: " Seek to contact the "Lizard King" - Hope to find answers - Maybe an alliance...?"
