My group, the Friday Gamers, is looking to fill a spot in our D&D game on Roll20 for the foreseeable future. Our heroes are all level 14 and we’re playing a D&D 5e game in my own custom world, the Halcyon Empire. The group has been gaming together for a little over a year now, but one of our members had a job change that meant he couldn’t join us any more. I would like to see someone who is interested in roleplaying and character development with a few years of tabletop experience under their belt (and preferably recently played D&D 5e). We have a campaign website at www.fridaygamers.ca/halcyon (though the game notes have not been updated for a couple of months). We chat a lot on Skype throughout the week and would like our prospective player to be just as active in the chat as they are in the game. We game on Friday nights at 9:00 PM EST until midnight. The world you will be playing in is a very old one. It’s had 10,000 years of history with civilizations rising and falling and has become kind of a hub world for a variety of races and cultures. Out of all this chaos, the Halcyon Empire was built. It’s an Empire that has lasted for a long time and at one time covered the entire continent of Eventyr, but now has been reduced. It is an empire that is built on the ideal of peace and they tend to brag that there have been no wars fought in the Empire for two hundred years. Two hundred years ago, though, there was a war that changed the Empire forever. Two hundred years ago saw the end of the Lich Wars. This was a series of wars that were fought against the Ten Lords of Death. It was a terrible time and the Empire was gravely wounded by them. When the wars ended, all the liches had been defeated (though not all destroyed) and peace was once again restored. The Empire, however, had shrunk. Half of the cities in the Empire were lost during the Lich Wars and that land was cut off by the massive and terrible Scar, the place where the flying fortress of Laria the Cloud Queen (the leader of the liches) fell and a constant source of unholy abominations. Now, one of the liches has returned. Maras the Broodmother has begun to terrorize the Empire once more and has entered into a deal with the Emperor. He has two years to live and prepare his people, then she will descend upon them once more and finish the job she started. In a desperate attempt to stave off this impending doom, the wizards of the Empire have created a portal to the lost half of the Empire to recover four powerful artifacts that will be instrumental in defeating Maras once and for all. These artifacts are the Four Pillars of Creation: the Chalice of the Mother, the Sword Retribution, the Rings of the Masters, and the Hammer of the Maker. Our intrepid adventurers have been journeying through the Old Kingdom (the lost half of the Empire) in an attempt to collect these artifacts before the clock runs out. They have recovered the Rings of the Masters and know where two others are, but the obstacles that prevent them from taking these artifacts are daunting indeed. The Sword is held by Rygar, the leader of a vast gnoll army; and the Chalice is held by the Orcs of the North, a close-knit clan of honorable and fearsome warriors that have become besieged by Rygar’s armies. Our heroes are Uroz, half-orc fighter and scion of the Orcs of the North; Ineis, a wood-elf druid who has become the ambassador between the high elves and the wood elves; and Sarric, the high elf swashbuckler with a penchant for the ladies. Unfortunately, they lost their bard, Lucien, in a climactic battle against Rygar (who literally bit the bard’s head off) and now need another adventurer to join in. Since you’ll be playing with me every week, I figure that you’d probably benefit from a bit of an introduction to me as a DM before you decide to commit yourself to a game. My name is Aaron and I’ve been playing D&D (and other tabletop RPGs) for a little over twenty years now. I cut my teeth on AD&D (that’s second edition) and never stopped since then. I’ve been a DM for that long as well, as once you’re a DM, that’s pretty much your lot in life. We sometimes take a break from the main story (especially if someone can’t make it for a game) to play different games or different one-shot adventures. I’ll always let you know if that’s going to happen through our Skype group (which I’ll send to you as soon as your application is accepted). I’d ask that you read over the campaign world and send me a PM with your character concept. If you are accepted, then I’ll send you a PM and I’ll ask that you write a short backstory (not a novel but also not a short paragraph) that firmly seats you in the world and gives a reason that you’d be joining this group of heroes. I don’t want to see any evil alignments or lone-wolf types. This is a team game and I’d like someone that works well with a group. One last thing: I have taken the kid gloves off for this game. There are some deadly fights and some deadly situations. Most of my players are on their second or third character by now. This is not a game where failure isn’t an option. If you die, you die (unless you get resurrected or reincarnated or whatever). If that doesn’t appeal to you or you get too attached to your characters and would feel betrayed or pissed off at me if your character died, then please do NOT apply for this game. My players enjoy challenging situations and none of them have ever felt like a death was unjustified or uncalled for.
