New to tabletops, any advice?

So recently (more like over the past year or so) I've gained an interest in Tabletop gaming, mainly as a new outlet of creativity. The normal RP chatroom i've frequented over the years (just chat rping) have died or gone down in quality. I was born after the first boom in TTRPGS thus never got into them and never had a group to play with (still don't). I learned about this site through Youtube and figured I'd have a gander, It sounds like a lot of fun but obviously I have no idea of where to begin. I have very limited knowledge of D&D and Some WH40k (Mainly through youtube again) So I was just wondering where is a good place to start, to learn rulesets etc.. a lot of the wiki's I've found are cryptic and not very well organized so I've had a hard time finding anything and I don't want to jump in blind and bog down any group I'm in with constant questions. Any advice would be helpful, for games I really only know about D&D (setting wise) and Warhammer 40k (Mainly because I watch Roll Play) Thanks in advance :)

Well, if you're coming from a chat RP environment, you might want to look into games that focus more on narrative mechanics rather than combat/action mechanics. Games like FATE, Dungeon World, or Fiasco. The rules in those games are lot less crunchy, and hopefully won't feel overwhelming for someone doing the crossover from freeform RP to the classic Tabletop style.

Also going to shuffle this to Off-Topic as it doesn't specifically target Roll20, but tabletop games in general. :)
Alright thanks :), I'll look those up, in the meantime is there any good place I can go for online players guides and rule sets for the 'crunchier' games, I feel like if I don't do some advanced research I'll never be able to play some of those games I doubt any group, especially here where I'm just a faceless nooblet would be willing to help me

There are some sites that have the rules for various game systems. Paizo - Pathfinder http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ http://www.d20srd.org/ Those would give you some familiarity with your chosen system (those are D&D systems) then you could look for some groups in the LFG forum and in the game listings there are games that welcome new players.
Thanks a bunch!

You are welcomed and just ask if you have a question. We are generally a very friendly and helpful commuity here.
There are also many DM's that have no problems taking in a completely new person and showing them the ropes. We were all new to the game at one point in time and as such all have first hand experience knowing what does or doesn't help a new person. There is only so much you can learn from the books and most people tend to learn faster/better through hands on experience. So you can easily check for a game you are interested and then message the DM/GM and let them know you are completely new to the system. Most will be ok with it but some prefer experienced players. If they are ok then you are luck, if not you merely move on and keep trying while doing some reading on the side.
