This is a personal opinion, and I want to begin with the caveat that this in no way is an indictment of the moderators because they are always superhelpful and friendly. I also wish to apologize if this is in the wrong forum but this seemed most apt. I'm also going to go ahead and close the thread right after I post it so that a long discussion doesn't start up below (Edit: Didn't realize I couldn't do that here. Sorry! Moderators, THIS is a forum post you should feel free to close immediately. I just flagged my own post in hopes that a moderator will close it for me quickly but still leave it here to be read.). However,I really think the policy for closing forum topics needs to be revisited. This usually happens in the Specific Use, API, or On Topic forums. Someone asks a question, receives a response that is helpful, and a moderator comes in and shuts down the thread (sometimes even after the OP comes in and asks a follow-up question that doesn't get answered). Multiple moderators do this so it's pretty clearly a policy decision from Roll20. The reason this is a problem is if someone has a question, the first answer they receive may not fully explain the answer to them, even if the moderators know exactly what the answer was getting at. For example, I had one thread where I asked a question (directly related to my use of Roll20 as a GM), got an initially helpful answer that was a link to the wiki and a little bit of detail, and the thread was closed by a moderator. I don't deny the answer I received was helpful, but I had further questions, not to mention there may have been someone who could have given me better information than what I received. Just because the first answer was helpful doesn't mean a subsequent one wouldn't be MORE helpful. And just because a wiki exists doesn't mean it explains every possible permutation of the issue (I had read the wiki and didn't find my answer there). I've even seen a topic recently where the OP asked a follow-up question and the moderator shut it down within two hours without the follow-up question being answered, except in a short sentence from the moderator that, in my opinion, did not answer the question clearly (I knew what the moderator meant because I was familiar with the topic. I'm not sure the OP would have.). This isn't about being able to start wide-ranging off-topic questions. It's about being able to use the forums for their intended purpose. The assumption that a moderator knows when the question has been fully answered is border-line insulting to the original poster. If the OP had the option to reopen the post, that'd be one thing. But we don't (again, for understandable reasons if the topic truly is off-topic). I don't know what the best way to fix this issue, but I do think it lessens my experience with Roll20.
