XCOM: Enemy Unknown BETA Testing

January 09 (9 years ago)

Edited February 11 (9 years ago)
so i think 2 days ago i decided to start creating the ruleset for a recreation of the famous pc game XCOM: Enemy Unknown out of boredom, and ever since ive been working hard refining and making the rule as faithful as it can be to its pc counterpart and now ive decided to test the ruleset.

What is XCOM?
XCOM is a game about aliens invading the earth and a secret military organization known as the Vigilo Confido or better known as XCOM tries its best to defend the earth against the invader using whatever means, even if it means using the alien's technology to get a better odds in success. You as the player take on the role of a Commander, as with 3 other Commanders, you order your soldiers in this dangerous and possibly unwinnable war.

UPDATE:
Because the time difference between here in philippines and across the world is very odd(im 13 hours ahead of tauntdragoon), ive decided to implement a slightly strick but forgiving "attendance". If any of the Player fail to show up Every Saturday 6 PM(Sunday 8 AM here) or so, Bench Commanders can take up the slot so it isnt wasted. The Starting time will always be Saturday 9 PM(Sunday 11 AM here). A Full House of 4 Player is recommended for this game for maximum interaction. Once the players have unlocked Squad Size I, an extra Bench Commander Can join the starting commander roster. and a 2nd bench commander can also join once the Squad Size II has been unlocked. There is power in group so dont be shy to wait. i am not kicking people in bench commander slot so keep being excited. Also once i learn how to implement a Spectator players here in roll20 i will open up slots.

Update: Commanders in Bench slot who has their name have middle line means you are in the game but has no soldiers yet and cannot join.

Commander Slot
>tauntdragoon
>Jadenarin
>Harry B.
>Joshua A
Bench Commanders
>Trevante
>goatman92
>Paddy Valdyr
>
>
>
>Javier F.
>
Everoth N.

Every Commander is given 500 Credits to be used for equipment, buying new soldiers and whatnot. Each Commander can make up to 4 character(any character sheet works, it needs only place to record your character).

The initial start date of this BETA campaign is still unknown but commander screening is always open. Commanders who left the game due to disinterest will have his/her space freed up and a new commander may take place with brand new characters.

to create a character, you need to read up on my Proof of Concept post because everything started there. But soon i will make a separate pastebin as a Players Handbook and AI Director Handbook. But in the meantime, consult this thread
https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/2794663/proof-of-concept-xcom-tabletop/?pageforid=2794663#post-2794663

Everything you need(at least what rules ive already completed) is there, from player manual to AI Directors manuals and guidelines.

Sessions will be carried out in a Skype-call manner and of course here at roll20. the Skype-call is just there for verbal interaction. Those who cant do such can still play and just use the chat function, but chat function isnt as reliable as voice-call so at least theres option :D.

I'd be interested in trying this. Shoot me your skype info and we can talk.
I told you on your other post I'd be up for testing u can shot Me a pm for my Skype info and we can chat some more
well tauntdragon and paddy your on the council now. we just have to wait for 2 more members. i wanna try it with full member first as a BETA so i know what it feels like.
I dont quite agree with your XCOM rpg copying straight out of the videogame, but I do want to test out what you have so far. My skype is goatman92-rp
its just a thing out of boredom mate. i just wanna see of XCOM will work on a tabletop environment. we have our own progative and stance on the game. but im a fan of the game so yeah. also ill put you on a list of potential commander. i already have 2 so stay tuned.
Count me in, ill love to see how the table top would work!
Reminder: To those who wish to join, please add your skype name as well, also while im still selecting more Commanders, you should proceed in making your soldiers and post it here.

Commander: Everoth Alejandro Nyesh
Country: Mx
Commander Regime: Reinforcements

The commander born in a family with strict military regime, was asked to pick a squad of what he believed could be the best to represent their country on a top secret project.

The squad was formed with a close number of candidates, from witch he learned and made sure none were corrupted and were as effective as recommended for the project.

The commander was not chosen for his defensive strategies, the close contact he had with his soldiers, allowed him to reinforce their men effectively, and because of his loyalty and effectiveness in battle the commander prefers the use of artillery. He is experienced and adaptable enough to deal with this unknown enemy and eliminate the possibility of failure.

UPDATE: as i write this update message, i am going to adjust some schedules and some matters to address. first the schedule, im gonna change the time from 12 PM(afternoon) philippine time to 8 PM(night) philippine time. Now for the various matters to address. Final Commander Selection will happen this saturday. selection will be carried out in a dice roll of 1d8. whose slot was chosen will be the last commander. The first mission we will carry out will be a VR Training to explain stuffs like terrain tag and how they work, and as well as explain how the "base" will work. then we will proceed on playing the game for real, like real alien attacks and what not. During VR Mission, killed soldier isnt killed. nor wounds carry over. Also for Bench Commander with no squad yet, i suggest you make one, you only have until friday to do so. Because Paddy Valdyr hasnt been updating to me in this matter, i downgraded him from active commander to Bench Commander to free up his space for someone who has already updated with me. Also because of lack of resources, currently, action maps(where the combat happens) will have a static white background with some colored shapes representing objects and terrains. once ive collected the necessary resources i will upgrade to a graphical styles.

im to sure i can do 8pm philippine time i looked it up and it says that about 12 hour ahead of  me that would be 8am for me so as much as i dont want to i might have to drop if that your set time now
im sorry taunt if thats the time i chose but i have nothing else. i cant literally wake up about 4 AM in the morning. its not that im incapable but my parents would be still asleep by that time and a voice chat would be bothering their sleep so i cant pick a good but between 8 PM ~ 10 PM as any later might not be enough time. also each session will range from 1 hour to 2 hours max.
Yeah I understand ur 12 hours ahead of me so the 12 pm time was good with me since that was midnight for me since I'm up till about 4-5 am and sleep till about 11 am but I'm also getting ready to start work soon and I would be mostly working in the morning so I'll probably just have to drop out cause of the time difference and work
thats fine man. maybe when i got a better feasible time that will work for everyone i will pick that one.
January 20 (9 years ago)
How feasible would it be to take a door off of a car to use as a shield?
what? i kinda dont get it man. be it a joke or sarcasm i really do not get your point harry. if your going on about my decisions about time i really cant find a better time that im still awake, not disturbing people around me, and people will still be awake or just woken up if i consider the 12 hours adjustments. so its really a problem so dont give me that. if your pertaining to the way xcom works with car doors as shields then its one of those video game logics. technically car door can be used as shield be it ballistic shot or explosion if the material is hard enough. you can see on some cop films that they use car door as bullet shield right.
humm, i just checked, today i was at 10 am, and it was 12 am philipines of the 21, so your like 14 hours ahead of me, to play at 8 pm your time i need to be up at 6 am my time...on sunday, after working all week, can we change this a bit? im not sure how does it affects everyone.
I'm gonna try getting up for the game but it will be 7:00 am for me
i guess ill try to wake up early then

so im just gonna adress this because for me its bugging me more than it should but, before i do i gotta bow down to show that i am sincere. none of you know im from philippines, and time differ across continent and mine just so happen to be 12 hours difference between you guys there in other country. and i am going on about my decision for  the time of the game. at first i chose 12 PM here because thats the most im active and ready to have some wacky fun with this little game ive set up. and im so enthuis about it that i forgot that majority of the time, my players would be from you guess it, other country. so after a few days of pondering on how to adjust my time, ive hit various walls that not on the player's side, but it was all mine. first is that i cannot wake up between 4~6 AM or my parents would be very suspisious on why i just woke up too early than my usual waking time. also thats the second problem, i still live with my parents and doing the whole game at about 4 am would probably wake them up and i will get in trouble, royally. so early in the morning(afternoon there) is out of the question, and the only option i have would be between 6 PM ~ 9 PM, night here at the philippines or roughly 5 AM ~ 8 AM there, about time you guys go to your works and whatnot so thats a problem. regardless i have no choice but use that time. maybe its a bit selfish of me but its not your fault guys, im gonna be an adult and take all the blame. if you choose to leave than thats okay with me, no hard feeling, so dont guilt yourself on leaving. even if you leave i will keep your squad data if you got that time all for yourselves and got the time to return. again im gonna be the one who will bow and sincerely say Im sorry for the inconvenience guys. i really do.
Due to some odd circumstances, ive decided to drop the bench commander selection and decided who will be the last commander myself. and that is Javier F. and the new time will be 11 AM or 10 PM
so i talked with him and we worked out he is 13 hours ahead of us est which im am and i said it would be great for him to try and run it around 10 pm us est which is 11 am for him and he said that would work out for him i figured it would also probably work out for most of you other guy better that way so 11 am sunday for him would be 10pm sat for us est

I don't watch cop shows. I don't watch much TV at all. Didn't mean to anger you, just letting my idea be thrown out to see if they'd work.
also my skype name is jadenarin almost forgot about that :p
just an update to the players. i am grateful and happy at the result of our launch and i look forward to next week's sessions. for those who is late do not worry. i do not kick players. and to tauntdragoon and jade. thanks guys for your awesome commanding. i can say that the launch game is a success. hope to see you guys next week.
Another update guys. because of a personal circumstances, i would not be available this week so sessions will be postponed until the next session. Also to those who still want to join you still can join. commander recruitment is still ongoing and until the bench slot has been filled, recruitment wont stop.
due to personal affairs changing my entire schedule, i wont be able to play for an unknown amount of time. as such, i might have to can the entire game, but if someone is willing to be the new GM i will gladly promote you. ive already extended an invitation to tauntdragoon should he wish to continue the game as the GM. im so sorry guys for such turn of events.
i would but im not to sure i was still getting the game mechanics down but if you want to talk and help me with the system a little bit ill do it if no one else want to step up to the plate
very well. we will talk this more about on skype. im really sorry guys.
February 23 (9 years ago)
Don't worry about it. Things happen, but at least you made your work available for all to use and play with and that in my opinion is a great thing to do even if you can't run it yourself!
i just hope i could have forseen it sooner. but yeah things happen. but i really intended to make my ruleset an open usage for everyone. so yeah if you guys want to GM yourselves knock yourselves out. the core ruleset has been finalized anyways. any tweak i made i will say it.
