No! The rules are not compatible for character generation. In classic Traveller you get two skills in the first term of 4 years of character development, and 1 skill after that per new term, plus some things from reaching certain ranks. In Traveller 5 you get *4* skills per 4-year term, plus extras from commission and promotions, reaching certain ranks, AND a skill or two by virtue of your homeworld. Why so many more? It's because some are Knowledges split up into different areas (you get only one specialty within the skill, then another on the next award, and by the third award only THEN do you get a skill such as Fighter-1 applicable to all hand-to-hand fighting.) Also, you have to roll UNDER a certain number on a number of dice, and the number of dice INCREASE with difficulty, so skill-levels are inflated to cope with that. As you get super-expert (able to become a trainer), you increase your chances at rolling EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN Characteristic+Skill at increasing levels: Easy (1D), Average (2D), Difficult (3D), Formidable (4D), Staggering (5D), Hopeless (6D), Impossible (7D), and Beyond Impossible (8D). If you are in a rush, you can attempt Hasty Beyond Impossible (9D) and Double Hasty Beyond Impossible (10D). We can talk about converting characters from another Traveller version. But T5 is a much richer determination suited to the roll-system.
