[5e OGL] Character Sheet Check Rolls in Macros/Abilities -- Not Working?

Edited 1457988136
In the DnD 5e Character Sheet wiki entry, I found this line: "For example, a character called Bob could use the Athletics check roll from the sheet by using the following code in a macro - %{Bob|Athletics_Check} or %{selected|Athletics_Check} if the token selected was associated with that character sheet" I wanted to be able to do this, where I can have a macro called "Hide" for instance and it will automatically run %{selected|Stealth_Check}, but whenever I do it, I get error "No ability was found for %{selected|Stealth_Check}", even though I do have a Stealth attribute for my character sheet and I also tried this on a Goblin NPC sheet with Stealth +6, and on the character sheets, clicking "Stealth" will make it perform the roll check with the ability modifier added. But when I put the macro together as I described, it says there is no such attribute. What am I doing wrong? I was able to get the repeatable calls working, for instance I can call a Goblin's melee attack with the following: "%{selected|repeating_npcaction_$0_npc_action}" Is there something that's changed that the wiki doesn't address? How can I get these check rolls to perform in macros?? Oh, and also, is it possible for me (I'm a free user, not paid at this time as I'm still getting the ropes of it) to make my own macros come out in cool looking tables and what not that are stylized like the character sheet rolls do? I have found some links online that appear to explain it, but they never work for me either. Oh, and one other thing, the wiki implies that I should use @{selected|stealth} to get the final modifer from stealth, as explained in this line of the wiki: skillname (the total bonus to be added from stat mod, proficiency and custom bonus) But this doesn't work for me, either. When I do that, I get 0 every time. I only seem to get the correct result if I use @{selected|stealth_bonus} for my characters, and @{selected|npc_stealth} for my NPCs. Why doesn't this stuff seem to match up with what the wiki says? What am I misunderstanding? By the way, I am using the 5th Edition ( OGL by Roll20 ) character sheet by Steve K., the first one in the list when you choose the character sheet for your game. And also I'm looking at this wiki page for it: https://wiki.roll20.net/DnD5e_Character_Sheet
the name of the button is probably not stealth_check I'm on mobile so I cannot look up the button, but if you inspect element you can do it
Jake M. said: the name of the button is probably not stealth_check I'm on mobile so I cannot look up the button, but if you inspect element you can do it Thanks, So what I did was, I used Google Chrome "Inspect Element" while hovering over the skill check, and it says button name = "roll_npc_stealth" for the NPC and it says "roll_stealth" for my character sheets. Unfortunately, I have two concerns with this. 1) It also doesn't work at all, which still confuses the heck out of me. and also 2) Even if it did work, I wouldn't want the name I need to use to call it to be different for NPCs vs characters. Why would anybody want that!? I want one button that I can use with any token to roll Stealth for the Hide action, and it should work whether it's an NPC or a character, but if the name of the roll for the macro is different depending on if it's a character on NPC, wouldn't that ruin the opportunity for it to work anyway? (This goes hand in hand with how my character's {stealth_bonus} is what I need to use, but for my NPC it's {npc_stealth} if I want to add my bonus/penalty/modifier to my Stealth check for any token). So what's the solution??? Am I wasting my time with the Roll 20 OGL sheet, or should I be using the Shaped Sheet instead? It's very confusing what is supposed to work in one sheet vs the other because I think I keep finding tips & tricks that only apply to the other, but I'm an amateur and I'm new to all this so I am not really sure half the time.
so %{bob|stealth} didn't work?

You're referring to Roll Templates . Some Character Sheets, like the OGL by Roll20 sheet, have their own unique Roll Templates. Nonetheless, all games have access to the built-in &{template:default} Roll Template . User Ed S. wrote an overview of some of the Roll Templates used by the OGL by Roll20 sheet.

Thanks for the links. I tried searching on roll20 and on Google and somehow couldn't find either of those entries for the OGL sheet. I'm going to have to come give them a look and see if they solve my problems. I really appreciate the help so far. I do have a question about the Shaped 5e Sheet... I started a game where I'm using that and trying to port over my character sheet and create a basic Goblin and recreate my macros that I was trying to get working with the OGL Character Sheet, and so far I'm having even more trouble with this! I'm referencing this wiki page: https://wiki.roll20.net/DnD5e_Shaped_Character_She... And honestly, very little seems to work the way the Wiki indicates. What's going on? The vast majority of "&{template:5eDefault}" Roll Templates samples I'm trying to utilize both from this Wiki and other forum posts are not working at all and tell me there are on tables or attributes, or whatever. Also, using the Stealth_Check (or other skillname_Check) macros doesn't work at all. And above all, I can't figure out how to run my NPC attacks. I've ported in a Goblin and it has its melee (Scimitar) attack and a ranged (Shortbow) attack, but I can't figure out how to make them work? I've tried the melee weapon & ranged weapon macro options that are outlined in the wiki, and I tried both "%{selected|repeating_attack_$0_attack}" and "%{selected|repeating_npcaction_$0_npc_action}" and neither of those works either? So why doesn't the Wiki seem to be accurate on so much of this stuff? I went through the effort to TRY and change to the Shaped Character sheet because of the wiki and all the forum posts and I just assumed I could use these features, but they just aren't working.

You might have set Token to be the Default Token for the your Goblin Character . (This is done via the Edit mode of the Character Window .) However, just to be sure— could you please verify that you have set that Token to Represent that Character ? (This is done via Token Settings window.) This is something that's commonly overlooked, and is often the source of issues relating to using the selected keyword with Attributes and Abilities . Nonetheless, the Shaped sheet has very recently undergone massive overhaul, and the Wiki has yet to address most of the changes made. Both the Shaped sheet itself and the Roll20 Wiki page for the Shaped sheet were designed and are maintained by the Roll20 Community. Once the Shaped sheet settles into a more stable release version, I have faith that the Roll20 Community will strive to get the documentation up to date. If you have any specific questions, concerns or feedback regarding the Shaped sheet, I highly recommend posting them in the most recent thread that the sheet's author, Kryx, has posted up to the Character Sheet forum . Presently, that would be this thread: [5e Shaped] v2.2.11 Class Features

Presently, that would be this thread: [5e Shaped] v2.2.11 Class Features Thanks for all the help on this, I'll have to decide whether to go forward with the OGL By Roll20 sheet or the Shaped Sheet. I'm really not sure what works best for me right now, they are pretty seriously different. But yes, I did have the token set to be represented by the Goblin character, so that wasn't the problem (lots of other @{selected|...} attributes & macros were working, but lots also aren't working, so I guess the difference is between the current version and that the documentation is not currently up to date to represent the current version. Thanks again. If I have more questions about the Shaped Sheet I'll take them to the form you linked me to, but if I end up going with the OGL sheet, where should I direct future issues I might with it? Keep it in this thread or is there somewhere else?
OK, as it turns out I've actually been utilizing the https://wiki.roll20.net/5th_Edition_OGL_by_Roll20 wiki this whole time and didn't realize it was actually the appropriate character sheet wiki for the sheet I'm using, haha. That was silly on my part. But yes, I learned about the repeating section calls, like this: %{selected|repeating_npcaction_$0_npc_action}, from that wiki in the first place. I still don't see anywhere in this wiki that would enable me to perform the ability & skill check rolls (what happens when I click on one of them on the character sheet) within a macro? Can someone help me out at least with just that bit of it? What am I missing? It doesn't seem to be covered in this wiki unless I'm just overlooking it somehow.

Similarly, we try to encourage discussion of the OGL sheet to take place within a designated stickied thread in the Character Sheets forum. Currently, that thread is: 5th Edition OGL by Roll20 v1.4 now with Transfer Script There is also a thread for discussion user-created macros specific to the OGL sheet, here: [5e OGL] Macros with the new sheet. However, I'll finish addressing your specific use questions regarding calling sheet buttons in this thread. Thanks again. I have read section 1.7 over and over again and I'm still not able to figure out what to do for this particular macro I wanted to create. OK, so in the character sheet, if I click on the Stealth skill in the skills list, it will perform a check and apply appropriate bonuses, etc. and output them in that template format. What I really want to do is have a universal token macro called #Hide that will perform a stealth check when I run it. I can't figure out how to run the stealth skill click from a macro? I thought it would be something %{selected|Stealth_Check}, but that doesn't do anything. By the way in case it wasn't clear, I'd like it to work for both Characters and NPCs... which is tougher than it sounds at least according to my own knowledge, because characters utilize {stealth_bonus} while NPCs utilize EITHER (as far as I can tell it is dependent on the NPC's stats) {npc_stealth} (if it has a specified stat in the skill, use this) or if they don't have a specified stat in the skill, I should use {npc_dexterity_mod}. But for either characters or NPCs when I click on "Stealth" under their list of skills it always uses the appropriate bonus. So how do I make a macro that calls the click?

I used my browser's element inspector to determine that the Ability call you're interested in is %{selected|Stealth} This will work regardless of whether you're viewing the NPC version or not.

It so happens that bonuses to individual skills on the NPC sheet do not get applied to the checks made from the Core tab. To add those NPC bonuses to the sheet button macros on the Core tab, you'll need to add the appropriate Attribute to the appropriate field on the Gear tab, like so: (Click the image below to play the .gif) Personally, I would probably just simply use the Gear tab for bonuses and ignore (or repurpose) the NPC bonus fields.
