One of the things that is the charm, but always bothered me about a few of the role play games that I’ve seen and experienced is that a group of random strangers meets at a bar. Then they strike, usually awkward, conversation and then they embark on dangerous enterprises without proper screening or vetting. Just a meh you seem competent enough chap let’s go to a dungeon together because this barkeep said so. I usually make my player’s have something in common I am running a campaign where a small group of players are druids trying to protect their beloved forest & end up uncovering a conspiracy to kill the forest and use its magic power to revive a dark god. (Also makes it easier to teach new player's since they all can share what they just learned and correct each other without me having to remember what ALL of the classes or races or background do or can do) In something that I am working on, I ask that my players take the soldier background. (I am debating if they should get this for free, meaning they have two backgrounds) So they can be put in the same unit and they have an excuse to be amicable or at least cooperative with other player's right off the bat, as opposed to having the rogue of the party constantly trying to steal everyone's gold, and then he gets caught by the barbarian and you are forced to excuse why the Dragonborn barbarian doesn’t or shouldn't just kill the Halfling rogue 5 seconds in. He tried to steal his gold and he is a barbarian, but he'll exercise restrain and proportional punishment this one time of course. Thoughts, comments, questions, discussions, predictions?
