Oresta reappears, and chides the party for abandoning Elaryan. She explains to Malak that Duke Furcas would never abandon his favored ones, and reminds him that Duke Furcas is expecting Elaryan to help destroy the Chaos Machine in the caverns below. As she disappears, she leaves the party two helpful items: an ebonwood wand that casts cure minor wounds , and a special ointment that returns Elaryan to flesh. The heroes regroup, then begin to proceed deeper into the Buried City. Suddenly, Lor returns! He is unable to account for his absence over the past hour, but the party is used to him acting strangely at this point. The companions travel down a long, twisting corridor. At one point, they come across a minotaur fighting three female humans. Both the minotaur and the humans claim to be on the side of right, but they are too engaged in battle to provide details. The party decides that the minotaur is more likely to be evil, and slay him, but not before he manages to kill two of his opponents. "Thank you ever so much for saving me, brave heroes," says the remaining girl. Malak decapitates her, and the party divides her possessions. At the end of the corridor, the "heroes" find a huge cavern, containing a massive machine. Catwalks snake over hundreds of feet, and venom-shaped thralls patrol the various levels. The companions manage to defeat several of the thralls, but some of the party members are weakened by poison, and most are wounded. Surely the Adamantine Cog is somewhere in this diabolical engine...
