Character Creation Books Allowed: We are using the core rule books for 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons. Since this a Forgotten Realms campaign, we currently only accept characters created using the Player's Handbook (PHB, Player's Handbook Errata ). the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (SCAG), the Elemental Evil Player's Companion (EE), and Volo's Guide to Monsters (VGM). If you use material from any source other than the PHB, you MUST tag each entry with the book and page number that it came from. I.e. City Watch (SCAG 145). Please do not request homebrew or material from other sources. They will NOT be approved. NOTE: A vote was conducted for adding the Elemental Evil Companion and the result was "No". Please do not make requests to add this material. If you are new and would like help creating a character, you can post a reply to this thread asking for help. We have many DMs willing to assist you. Create your character using one of the blank character sheets located in the Blank Character Sheets subfolder which is in the Characters folder located in the campaign Journal (tab to the top right when logged in). Roll20 Character Sheet Tutorial Be sure to put your Player Name as it appears in Roll20 in the Miscellaneous Notes on the Character tab of your character sheet. All characters begin at 1st level. For determining ability scores, use the "Variant: Customizing Ability Scores" on page 13 of the PHB. ABILITY SCORE CUSTOMIZER FOR 5E . We do allow the "Variant Human Traits" detailed on page 31 of the PHB.. We follow the basic criteria of the fifth edition model, meaning "no evil characters". You can use starting wealth by class (PHB 143) if you would like. Use the average of each die roll rounded up. So each d4 would equal 3, making 5d4 x 10 equal 150 gp. Alternatively, you can sell unwanted items from starting equipment for half of its value. When adding equipment to your character sheet, the easiest way to do so is to add an entry to the appropriate section ATTACK (weapons and ammo), ARMOR (armor and shields), or EQUIPMENT (everything else). Search for the piece of equipment in the SRD (tab at the top right next to the Journal tab). Click and drag the item onto the entry that you created and all of the information will automatically be populated for you. NOTE: Some equipment is not included in the SRD and will therefore will have to be added and populated manually. If your character has spells, there are two easy ways to add them to your character sheet. Either use the SRD as described above or you can use the spell import option. To use the spell import option, you must have a token associated with your character sheet. If you do, go to the Collection tab and click "In Bar" on the Add-Spell macro. Close your character sheet and select your character token, click the Add-Spell button, and type the name of the spell that you would like to add, then open your character sheet and click "Import". NOTE: Some spells are not included in the SRD and will therefore have to be added and populated manually. Your character bio will not be shared with other players until you have an avatar and background story so please remember to complete this section. A good bio will be brief enough that other players will take the time to read it (usually about 1-2 paragraphs) with as much description as possible. Longer bios will be more successful if they are broken down into titled sections. There is a "Character Setup Quickguide" handout available in the campaign journal with further details to assist you in making a character. Animals: If your character will have a mount or similar pet, you must create a character sheet for it as well. The easiest way is to use one of the blank character sheets, switch to NPC mode (bottom right of Core tab), then search for the creature in the compendium, and click and drag it on to the sheet to populate the sheet statistics. Be sure your DM assigns a token to your creature and approves it. Approval: When you are finished creating your character in Roll20, you must have it approved. At the start of your first session, please have a DM take a look at it. Once everything checks out, be sure that the DM has signed "Approved by [Name]" in the GM Information section of your character Bio. You will not be able to actually see this section, so you will just have to get verbal verification that it has been done. You may also post to this forum to request approval, but if you have not received a response by the time of your first session, be sure to have your DM do it then. Join a Game! Check the GAME SESSION SCHEDULE thread to find an upcoming game to join. Note that you may have to use the Character Vault to transfer your character to the campaign location. After doing so, your DM will have to give you edit rights before you can view/edit your character sheet. Advancement: When advancing, use the average hit points for your class instead of rolling for hit points. You may also choose a Feat instead of an Ability Score Enhancement. You can check your total experience points and downtime earned by clicking here... Experience and Downtime Log Character Wealth: A player may never swap any equipment or treasure from one of his/her own characters to another one of his/her own characters. The only way this is allowable is if the receiving character has paid the other character the market value of the services rendered. This also means no loans from one character to another. Character Activity in the Timeline Here are some guidelines to follow by when joining games to maintain continuity in the timeline. 1. A PC cannot participate in an event that takes him/her back in time. 2. A PC cannot participate in more than one event on any given calendar date. To keep things simple, we are including the game calendar dates in the Experience and Downtime Log . We are leaving it up to the players to check your PC's history before using it in a session. Voice Chat The group uses Discord for voice chat. You do not have to download Discord, but you will get better quality results if you do. Please remember to put yourself on Mute if you decide to listen in on a session that you are not involved in. The link to Discord voice chat is here: Discord OGS (Our Gaming Server) Voice Chat Inactivity PCs: Characters that have not been played for awhile will be considered "Inactive" and may be archived. The character may no longer be visible in the journal but can be restored at the player's request. Characters that are archived for over 3 months may be considered "Retired" and restored as a pre-generated character, NPC, etc... Members: Members that have not been active in the first month after they have joined or that have not been active for a two months, may be kicked from the game to make room for more active players. If you expect to be inactive for two months or longer but would like to remain in the group, let us know and we will take note of it to prevent you from being kicked. If you discover that you have been kicked from the game due to inactivity (or by accident), but still have an interest in being a part of the community, please let us know and we will invite you back in. DMs: If you notice in the experience log that a character has been inactive for awhile, please post the name(s) of the PC(s) here that are up for archiving. If the player does not respond, archive the character by sending all associated sheets in the campaign to the archives. Also, hide the cells for the PC in the experience log and other associated log sheets. Improving Roll20 Performance on Your Device Here are some tips as to how to get Roll20 to run faster on your device. Disable voice and video options in your Roll20 settings. Do a disk cleanup on your computer. This will improve your general PC performance. Use your search bar to find "Disk Cleanup". If you are still having sluggish performance, turn your Roll20 Master music volume level all the way down (slide bar all the way to the left). Run an anti-spyware program like Spybot. You can get it free here https://www.safer-networking.org/ If you have any further questions about any of the topics above, or need a character pulled out of archive, please reply here.
Being new to Roll20 and 5e, I have made a bit of a mess out of my cleric, and find that I'm not enjoying playing him too much. He's 3rd level now. If I wanted to completely rebuild him, would that be possible at his current level or would I have to start over at level 1? and if so, how much could he change? I have an idea for a complete re-vamp including class and race, but he's the only character I have played and would like to keep one that was above 1st level. He only has one magic item, a bag of holding, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Thanks

Mike said: I have not seen it stated formally but I believe we are using the Adventure League rules. That means you can pretty much change things about your character like race, class, stats, background and feats all as long as its by the rules up to level 4. When you reach level 4 you are stuck. You normally have to make these changes on a level up. So if you want to change, now at level 3 is the time to do it. Level 3, 4, 5 are the big Levels in 5e. They are the levels you really get to customize and get to know your characters. So level 4 is the general cut off level. Other GMs want to vote? That is correct. That is what we have been using. I would like to stick to that as it is very important for new players that may not know much about building a good character. By the time you reach 4th, you have had a chance to learn your options. So my vote is to keep that. I think it is also in one of the core books as well, but I may actually be thinking of the starter book that came with Lost Mines of Phandelver.
