5e Monster Archive?

September 10 (8 years ago)
Hi all,
I am currently working my characters through Out of the Abyss and manually creating each monster as an NPC statblock.  Its time consuming however it does speed up play from my end as the DM.  I suspect I am not the only DM to have statted up 5e monsters in roll20.  Is there a user archive anywhere to share (for example import/export function) or am I stuck making my own monsters?

Second question, if I grabbed the Storm Kings Thunder could I transfer monsters from that adventure to Out of the Abyss if there was anything of interest?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that all the 5e sheets support drag and drop of monsters from the compendium, but I know for certain that the OGL by Roll20 sheet and the shaped do. That's as close to a monster archive as you're going to get. As for transferring content from SKT, see this forum post about the character vault (as GM, you could transfer any/all of the monster characters). Hope that helps.

Free users (including the Creator of a game) are not able to export Characters into a game with the Limited Vault Access Level. As a Free user, all non-module games that you create are equipped with the Limited Vault.

The 5e Community sheet does not support drag-and-drop from the Compendium.

Thanks both, so, are you saying if I am a paid user I can grab a monster from the 5e compendium and import it directly in to my game?
September 11 (8 years ago)
Any user, regardless of subscription level, can drag-and-drop from the 5th Edition SRD Compendium onto certain Character Sheets (e.g. OGL by Roll20 or Shaped for D&D 5E, both of which have been coded to handle Compendium drag-and-drop).

However, only subscribers can use the Character Vault to transfer Characters between games that they have created.

You sir, have saved me a ton of work, thank you very much.

Although, now anyone can export characters to the vault regardless of subscription level or game type, and can import them into games made with certain paid modules regardless of subscription level.

Bear in mind, not all monsters in the MM can be found in the compendium. But it certainly helps.

Yeah.  It's only OGL but better than nothing.  For example all the OGL entries cover 29 of the potential 30 monster/NPCs encountered in one of the books chapters so big saver.

If if I wanted to ask of enhancements to the 5e character sheet and Compendium where can I post those?

For the sheet, there's the OGL sheet thread. For additions to the compendium there won't be any unless wizards releases more content under the ogl.
September 12 (8 years ago)
Hi Scott, I don't want to add things to the compendium as I understand the legal restrictions.  But I would like to have some enhancements.  For example being able to drag and drop traits between creature types.

For example, there is a drow Medusa in Out of the Abyss which means the medusa should have drow traits included and even some attacks.

Will check out the other thread, thanks.

One last question, is there a list of the monsters in the Storm Kings Thunder?  As that would influence if I would buy the online version or not (dont have the physical one yet to check against).

I can answer that one, I'm preparing to DM a test run of Storm King's. There is a Page that contains all the monster (and NPC) tokens collected together in the Roll20 version of the module.

Hi Gold, is this list available or not yet?

In the Roll20 version of the Module, after purchasing and starting a game of it, the GM can access a Page called "Token Sheet" in the Page Toolbar, and on that page there is 1 token of every monster from the module.

From the description on Roll20 Marketplace, it says "Over 200 statted Tokens featuring original artwork from Dungeons & Dragons."

If I'm misunderstanding your question please ask again.

In case you are asking for a text list of the monsters to be posted, here is a small excerpt of them by-name:

...
Black Pudding
Bugbear
Bulette
Cambion
Centaur
Chimera
Couatl
...
+ dozens more

You sold me on it, thanks.  Going to buy it.  Time > Money.

Cool. Just so you know, Michael, you would have access to run those tokens with their stats within that game (module). Of course you can run whatever campaign/adventure that you want, within that game (instances of that module), and use the monsters on any map (Page) of it via copy and paste including new pages.  But, if you wanted to move the monsters (and their tokens) from this into another game, you would need transmogrify feature of Roll20 (a subscriber feature). In other words, going back to the question of your 1st post: if you get STK and you want to transfer the Token Sheet page to your homemade Apoc game you would need Pro for the month in order to use transmogrify (page copier).

Could also use the character vault which now has some limited utility for all users. Unless these tokens are somehow stated without being linked to a character journal entry.

The new Character Vault would allow anyone to bring your outside characters into SKT. Also, verily, anyone can export such Journals to their Character Vault. GM would need a Plus or Pro subscription from there (in order to port from Character Vault into your own created game).

True, although thought I'd throw it out there since it isn't only SKT that allows it.

Thanks Gold.  So I need a pro subscription and then I can copy the page of tokens to my game.  Will PRO also allow me to grab the statblocks and handouts as well (all the Journal stuff basically)?

With Plus you will be able to use the Character Vault to effectively 'export' the characters from the module, although this might be a lengthly process for such a large module. With Pro and therefore the Transmogrifier you will be able COPY the following to another game you own (read 'Created') with a simple drag and drop which makes the process a whole lot quicker:

Content that can be 'Transmogrified':
  • Pages
  • Characters
  • Decks
  • Handouts
  • Rollabletables
  • Jukeboxplaylist

Nice, looking at the other PRO features I think I will give it a go.  API in particular looks good.  Thanks for the info.

Thanks Aaron :)

OK so just took the Transmogrifier for a spin.  Its certainly better then making those monsters one by one but can I suggest to add the option to trasnfer by folders as well?  Individually trasnfering all those mosnters then reordering them is a bit of a pain.  Since I would like to eventually have a Monster Manual folder that I could move (and expand) frome game to game.

Here are 2 Suggestions for that, if you would like to add your comments and vote +1 (click up on the little triangle to vote for it),

Transmogrifier allow copying of folders
