Adventure recap

Since Chuck's busy thinking up cool vignettes and awesome DM stuff, I figured I'd take it upon myself to write down recaps of our sessions before I completely forget all the awesome stuff our characters have done and lived through, starting with our first session. Ya'll are very welcome to comment and add anything I might have forgotten and if anyone would like to clean up my writing and post it on the Actual Play thread or something, that'd be cool! :)
Chapter 1: The Adventure begins Two groups of adventurers, each following the directions of a mysterious compass, meet at the harbor in Neverwinter. All six heroes watch in wonder as the two compasses attract each other and then upon meeting, both point off to the west, across the ocean. Sigrun, the kindly, cleric of Sune is convinced the two groups were destined to meet, brought together by a greater force through the compasses. Naeris, the scholarly warlock is more skeptical of such fanciful notions, but like rest of the group, she is greatly intrigued by the mystery and the 6 heroes all agree to work together for the time being in order to eventually solve the mystery of the two compasses. Meanwhile, the group is recruited for a job by Gundren Rockseeker, an old friend of Helm, the dwarven fighter. They are to escort a supply wagon from Neverwinter to the small mining town of Phandalin while Gundren rides on ahead with his mercenary bodyguard, Sildar Hallwinter. While negotiating the terms of their employment, Raynor, the elven ranger manages to negotiate a higher pay for the entire group and begins to earn himself the title of group leader. Along the way, the heroes happen upon a horse and a pony lying dead in the middle of the road with black, goblin-made arrows sticking out of them. While investigating the dead animals, the group is attacked by goblins. During the excitement of the battle, Naeris struggles with the volatile power of her eldritch magic and accidentally singes a part of Helm’s magnificent beard right off and very nearly causes Zaradur, the boisterous half-orc barbarian, a most painful injury. One goblin in particular proved annoyingly dexterous and managed to dodge the attacks of both Zaradur’s and Helm’s axes and Naeris’ magical attacks until Naeris finally managed to halt the goblin with a Chill Touch allowing Zaradur and Helm to finally slay the goblin. Meanwhile Raynor, well-versed in the art of goblin-slaying manages to almost single-handedly fight off the main bulk of the attacking goblins with his dual short swords. Luckily for Helm, Sigrun’s healing magic, bestowed upon her by her goddess heals the dwarven fighter’s injuries and even grows out the singed beard even bushier and more magnificently than before. Before long, the goblin attackers are defeated and the heroes decide to track the goblins’ trail back to their hideout. They leave Elvalur, the elven thief, to watch the supply wagon while the rest moves on to investigate. Along the way, the group manages to bypass two traps laid out by the goblins and make it safely to the entrance to goblins’ cavernous hideout. Outside the hideout, the group easily dispatches the two goblin sentries posted outside the hideout, with Raynor’s goblin-expertise. The group then ventures into the cave. Inside a small cavern close to the entrance, the group encounters three wolves apparently set to guard the entrance. Through some quick thinking, Zaradur and Raynor manage to subdue the wolves by feeding the dead goblin sentries to them. While the wolves are properly distracted, Raynor climbs a pile of goblin-waste up a small passageway to scout ahead deeper into the cave, where he finds what appears to be the lair of the leader of the goblins. Upon returning, he is however unable to convince the rest of the group to climb the pile of goblin-sewage up the narrow passageway and instead the group follows the main passageway further into the hideout. The group finds a bridge suspended high above, crossing the passage they’re traveling down and another small passage to the left leading away from the main passage. Scouting down the left passage, they find a living area with a group of goblins milling about. They decide to take down the goblins by splitting the group. Raynor leads Sigrun and Naeris down the passage to the left, while Zaradur and Helm climb up to the bridge and make their way to the living area that way. The goblins prove a tough encounter and Sigrun, who carelessly charged ahead into the group of goblins gets knocked unconscious before anyone manages to get to her aid. Just as the situation becomes truly desperate, Helm and Zaradur finally make their way into the battle. Together, they manage to get Sigrun back on her feet and turn the battle back around. Just as the battle finally appears to have been won, a large goblin appears at the top of an alcove with a human hostage. The group recognizes the hostage as Gundren’s bodyguard, Sildar. Alarmed by the sudden hostage situation and weary from the recent battle, the group is reluctant to get themselves into yet another tough battle. Raynor attempts to negotiate with the goblin for Sildar’s release. But behind his back, Naeris decides their position is much too precarious for negotiations and quietly takes the matter into her own hands. She uses her awakened mind to threaten the goblin leader into releasing Sildar. Frightened by the sudden, foreign voice speaking in its head, the goblin turns its stance right around and insists the heroes take Sildar and leave. So trusting in their fearless leader’s persuasive abilities, no one questions their good fortune and they all hurry out of the goblin hideout with Sildar in tow. Back by the supply wagon, Sigrun treats Sildar’s wounds. Meanwhile, Sildar tells the heroes that Gundren was taken away somewhere by the goblins to meet their mysterious leader known only as “The Spider”. After a few hours of rest, the group hurries on to Phandalin, urged on by Sildar, hoping to find out more about Gundren’s whereabouts and The Spider.

You are my hero, Aviana -- I will definitely be posting this to the AP thread if you don't mind! I think y'all's adventures deserve to be shared. :)
FYI: I have posted the first adventure log to the AP thread!&nbsp;<a href="https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?788762-D-amp-D5E-True-North-The-Compass-Campaign&p=20523556#post20523556" rel="nofollow">https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?788762-D-amp-D5E-True-North-The-Compass-Campaign&p=20523556#post20523556</a>
Second session all written up! :D Chapter 2: Phandalin Upon arriving in the town of Phandalin, the party turned in the supply wagon and received their payment for the job. Unfortunately, without Gundren there to verify the new deal, Raynor was unable to convince the man there to pay them the higher rate. He was, however able to get Sigrun’s pay for her, as the cleric had gone elsewhere, while the rest delivered the supplies. The party went to the tavern to gather some information. There, they learned the town was under threat of a gang of thugs known as the RedBrands. The people of Phandalin, clearly intimidated by the band of thugs were reluctant to talk to the party about them. But the party was able to talk to a boy named Pip, who was happy enough to talk to them. Not everyone was so happy with how forthcoming Pip was and the party noticed especially a middle-aged woman, who seemed particularly unhappy with the boy talking to the heroes. Worried about the young boy’s safety, Elvalur and Zaradur went to shadow the woman while Sigrun went to talk to the local sister and Raynor and the rest of the group took the time to go to the Coster for supplies. Sigrun stopped by the shrine for a moment to offer a prayer to the goddess of luck. There she was cornered by a group of young men wearing matching red sashes, who thought to rob the kindly cleric while she was alone. They would soon learn the folly of threatening a dwarf in armor and shield, regardless of whether she chooses to decorate it with symbols of love and beauty. Alerted by the commotion in the town square, the rest of the party quickly came to their cleric’s aid. Seeing Sigrun surrounded by thugs, Helm did not hesitate to throw his handaxe straight at one of the men, though he missed. Unwilling to cause any bloodshed, Sigrun attempted to talk some sense into the Redbrands. However, the brash young men failed to understand their situation and merely laughed at Sigrun’s attempts at peace. What they failed to realize was, Sigrun had owned and run a tavern long before she heard the call of Sune and she knew all too well how to deal with the unruly and the drunk. And today, she wasn’t alone. The Redbrands quickly came to know the dwarf’s special brand of tough love. One was gifted with a steel-toed boot in the crotch before he, together with his fellows, were brutally cut down by the rest of the party. The last Redbrand tried to run and though he easily dodged a half-hearted Eldritch Blast by Naeris, he had no hope to escape Sigrun’s Sacred Flame. It left him horribly burned and just barely alive, now a captive to the party. He was lovingly dubbed “Extra-crispy” by Naeris. Extra-crispy was more than happy to talk and named a seedy tavern as the favored meeting place for the Redbrands. Pumped up by the last fight, the party was eager to face more Redbrands and rid the town of the troublesome thugs terrorizing the small town. They made their way to the tavern and after a short moment of planning and deliberation, they split up to cover each entrance to the tavern, thinking to surround and trap the Redbrands in their hole. Zaradur and Raynor lead the charge, bursting through the front door with Extra-crispy in front, Helm and Sigrun burst from the back, ready for battle. A split-second later, Naeris and Elvalur calmly stepped into the tavern by the side entrance (‘cause historian’s priviledge). They were all met by stunning silence and a scruffy, dwarven wench staring dispassionately from behind the bar. The tavern was empty. Immediately, Zaradur’s face fell and the large half-orc withered with disappointment. He’d been so looking forward to a real bar-fight. “Can I help you?” The barmaid grumbled, rubbing a dirty glass with an even dirtier rag. Confused and disappointed, the party questioned the barmaid, who did confirm Extra-crispy’s story that the Redbrands were indeed regulars at the tavern. However, they weren’t there at this moment. The barmaid didn’t know where else they were hiding. The party left the tavern and Sigrun faltered between leaving Extra-crispy to his burns or spend her healing magic on him rather than save it for her friends. In the end, she settled on a compromise and the party took Extra-crispy to the sister and asked her to tend to him instead. Somewhat confident in the sister’s albeit reluctant willingness to take care of the Redbrand that had spent so much time terrorizing her town, the party left her to it and decided to find Pip’s friend Carp (sp?), who had allegedly spotted the Redbrands in the woods. The friend turned out to be an adventurous Halfling boy, who was immediately star-struck by the band of adventurers, who had come to talk to him. It turned out the kid dreamt of becoming an adventurer one day. Carp was more than happy to lead the party to a cave in the woods just below the ruined manor, from which he’d seen the Redbrands leave and enter on occasion while he was out playing. As thanks for his help, Raynor gifted the boy with an arrow from his quiver, for the day when he could leave on his own adventure. The thoughtful gift was quickly followed by Zaradur, who grinning widely, piled a javelin on top of Raynor’s arrow in Carp’s tiny hands. The party watched little Carp happily run off with their gifts, confident he would indeed make a fine adventurer one day – provided he didn’t trip and skewer himself on his pointy gifts first. Inside, the cave was large with a deep, long pit running through the middle and a stone corridor to either side. It didn’t take long for the party to feel as if they were being watched. Naeris heard a voice in her head. Just then, a creature with a single, giant eye appeared from the shadows. Seeing the monstrous creature, Zaradur, Raynor and Helm immediately charged at it, weapons drawn. The creature screamed with pain and wailed in Naeris’ mind: “Your friends are hurting me!” It begged her to make them stop. Unable to take the Nothic’s screams echoing in her head, Naeris halted the warriors, telling them she could communicate with the creature. Eager to not end up sliced and diced, the Nothic was very forthcoming and happily told Naeris about its masters, the Redbrands. It told her how the masters gave it tasty corpses to eat and in exchange, it watched the cave entrance for them. Knowing well her companions by now, Naeris easily promised the Nothic plenty of corpses to eat and the Nothic happily told the party of the hideout’s layout and where the Redbrands were currently. Following the Nothic’s directions, the party followed a stone corridor to the left, only to end up at a dead end. After a cursory glance at the stone wall, Helm angrily declared the Nothic a damned liar and Zaradur readily agreed. Wise Sigrun however, quickly recognized the dwarven workmanship of the corridor and before long; she revealed a secret door leading into a cellar-room with a pool of water. Helm and Zaradur were of course the two most excited about the secret door. Zaradur even tried to claim he’d been the one to find it. They were the first two through the door and Zaradur nearly took an arrow from a Redbrand standing across the pool. Eager for the fight, Helm squeezed past Zaradur and hurled his hand axe at the Redbrand. Unfortunately, his throw went wide and the axe plunked straight into the pool. Zaradur, every bit as eager, leapt across the pool of water and landed – axe-first on top of the Redbrand, cleaving him straight through. With the fight over, Helm decided to climb into the pool to retrieve his axe, only to plunge right in and disappeared below the surface as he sank to the far bottom like a rock. Worried that the heavily armored dwarven fighter was going to drown, Sigrun threw a rope into the water for Helm to grab onto so the others could pull him up. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the pool, Helm found his hand axe and the rope that had been thrown down for him. For some reason known only to Helm, the dwarf decided to forego the rope and attempted to swim back up to the surface by himself. However, he soon found it impossible, as his armor kept pulling him back down and he finally relented and grabbed onto the rope. He was safely pulled out of the pool, grinning like a fool as he triumphantly held his hand axe up for the others to see. A moment later, the door next to where the Redbrand had been opens and another short battle against Redbrands ensues. Helm got to use his greataxe to splatter one Redbrand as well. The party eft one man alive to interrogate and tied him up. They then took a moment to discuss among themselves trying to figure out who was the most intimidating and thus should conduct the interrogation. Naeris found the discussion very quaint and let the men to their discussion, amused that the first choices were between Zaradur, whose goofy antics and previous attempts at intimidation had proved he was about as intimidating as a retarded kitten and Helm, the quirky dwarf with the giant, bushy beard and a solid block of stone for brains. Helm stepped up and proceeded to scream the poor captive right in the face. The wild eyes, massive beard still dripping wet and the horrible scream easily convinced the Redbrand that he was facing a truly deranged, crazy dwarf. He was more than happy to talk for his life after that. He told the party of the leader of the Redbrands known only as Glass-staff. He told them that Glass-staff was likely in his office along with the rest of the Redbrands through the corridor on the other side of the cave and pit.

My memory tends to be more associative than straight recall, so when I read what you've written, a good bit comes flooding back. I've posted chapter 2:&nbsp;<a href="https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?788762-D-amp-D5E-True-North-The-Compass-Campaign&p=20529940#post20529940" rel="nofollow">https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?788762-D-amp-D5E-True-North-The-Compass-Campaign&p=20529940#post20529940</a>
Awesome work Aviana. And really loving Chuck's comments too. Just to get it right, I wasn't in the first session, because of that internet problem.
True, but Elvalur was still kinda there, which is why he got wagon-watching duty so he wasn't really in the adventure. :P But I suppose Chuck could note player absences in his comments, if he wants?

Yes, Chuck told me about it. And yes, I do think so. But he made a note to the second session, while I was absent in the first one. No big deal though :) Looking forward to the third session recap.
Duly noted, Matheus -- I will correct. :)

Glad you enjoy the recaps, Mat :D Good to know at least two people bother to read them! xD And finally finished 3rd session! (EDITED 03-11-2016) Chapter 3: Glasstaff and the Redbrands After a short rest, the party left the Redbrand tied up in the small break room they had rested in and continued on to the other side of the cave. Here they stumbled upon a barrack’s type room filled with bugbears (or was it hobgoblins?). A tough battle in the stone-corridor ensued, during which a bugbear ran terrified from Naeris’ psychic attack and disappeared down the corridor. But the heroes prevailed and the remaining bugbears were cleared. Upon investigating the bugbears’ barracks Zaradur finds a goblin hiding under one of the beds and much to Naeris’ disgust, the rest of the party immediately adopts the wretched thing as their new friend/pet. Interested in nothing but saving his own hide, Droop, the cowardly goblin was more than happy to play along with the heroes. He even happily agreed to being tied up. Exhausted and injured from their fights, the party decided to retreat and take a long rest, taking Droop with them. Naturally, Droop was the entertainment of the day. Sigrun even went so far as to hug him, much to the poor goblin’s discomfort. Refreshed after their long rest, the party felt once again confident enough to venture into the Redbrands’ hideout and headed in once again through the cave entrance. They were met with a gruesome display. The bugbear that ran away from their last fight was strung up at the entrance, dead. Behind it stood three Redbrands each behind a woman tied to a pole - An older woman and her two daughters. “We’ve been waiting for you.” The apparent leader, standing behind the older woman called out smugly. Outraged by the cruel cowardice, Zaradur challenged the Redbrands to abandon their hostages and fight fairly, as men. Needless to say, it had little effect. Determined to overpower the Redbrands before they could harm the women, Raynor followed by Elvalur and Zaradur charged each at one Redbrand. They were lucky enough to dodge the arrows of Redbrand archers hidden in the corridors on either side of the cavern. During the fight, Zaradur leaped impressively across the pit to aid Elvalur, who was struggling against two Redbrands and landed axe-first on top of one, cleaving him straight through. Meanwhile, Raynor, left alone with two Redbrands each with a hostage managed to defeat one Redbrand, but failed to prevent the remaining thug from stabbing his hostage fatally in the side and the woman slumped to the ground. At the same time, the older woman, still haphazardly tied to a pole began to slip into the pit. Raynor heroically grabbed her before she could fall. Across the pit, Zaradur noticed Raynor’s predicament and leaped back straight across the pit to prevent the Redbrand from taking advantage of Raynor’s prone position. Raynor however, found himself struggling with his thin elfish arms against the old woman’s weight and pulling her back up from the edge of the pit in the middle of the fight proved a challenge indeed; a challenge, which he would no doubt have eventually overcome, if it was not for Glass-staff’s interference. By the crafty, old mage’s command, Zaradur, who had been fighting the Redbrand suddenly stopped and turned on Raynor. Unbidden, the half-orc barbarian struck Raynor with his axe, forcing the ranger to drop the old woman into the pit, we’re she thankfully landed relatively softly on top of a pile of decomposing bodies. Exasperated by the barbarian’s sudden, completely uncharacteristic actions, Naeris first demanded an explanation, upon receiving none, she ordered the daft oaf to desist and sit himself down until she could sort him out. To her outrage, Zaradur refused. That was when she noticed Glasstaff skulking in the dark further into the cave and she realized what was happening. Furious at the mage for messing with her barbarian, Naeris directed a vicious, psychic attack at him, killing him instantly. Freed from the wizard’s charm, Zaradur recovered quickly and charged at the wizard who dared mess with his head. However, he misjudged his step and tumbled into the pit, just in time to catch the wizard’s glass staff before it would have shattered on the stone floor at the bottom of the pit. With the wizard dead, the fight ended quickly. The old woman was helped up from the pit and Raynor was even able to save the young woman, who had been stabbed, using the healing magic Sigrun had taught him. Raynor and especially Naeris remained angry at Zaradur for a while yet, for his actions during the battle when he was charmed by the wizard, much to the half-orc’s confusion. The old woman and her daughters returned to town and the party left the dead bodies for the Nothic to feast upon as they ventured forth in search for Glasstaff’s study. They found the study in the deepest parts of the hideout, where the wizard had kept a small alchemy laboratory. Naeris pilfered some rare ingredients while Raynor found a dead rat, which he found fit to poke. A supernatural tingle went through him at the contact and he questioned Naeris about it. She informed him matter of factly, that it was a dead rat. Then, she eventually explained, it had to be the wizard’s familiar and what Raynor had felt, was a residue of the psychic link between the familiar and its master, disturbed by the Nothic feasting on the wizard’s brain. Past the laboratory, the party found the wizard’s bedroom, where they found the lion’s share of the Redbrands’ stolen treasures and a letter from The Spider, addressed to Iarno, Gundren Rockseeker’s missing wizard. It became apparent, that Glasstaff, the leader of the Redbrands was in fact Iarno, who had betrayed Gundren and instead worked with the mysterious Spider. Through Iarno's letter, the party learned about Cragmaw Castle, which Naeris recalled from one of the countless books she had read, which made locating the ancient ruin an easy feat. On the way out, the party stopped by the crypt, where their Redbrand prisoner had reported undead and cleared that out. DM’s epilogue: As Naeris is leaving the cavern, the nothic calls out to her. When she responds, it offers its thanks for sparing it and for the grand meal she has delivered. It also gives her a gift: a +1 longsword in a silver-chased scabbard. The sword is inscribed with the name “Talon,” and its hilt is worked in the shape of a bird of prey with outspread wings. It once belonged to a great knight named Aldith Tresendar, known as the Black Hawk, former lord of the manor above. ---- Back in Phandalin, Mirna rubs the rope burns on her wrists as she thanks Raynor for rescuing her and her family. She has nothing to give him, but repays his kindness with a story: when she was a young girl, she and her family fled from the town of Thundertree after undead overran the place. Her family had an herb and alchemy shop in the southeast part of Thundertree, inside which a case containing an emerald necklace was hidden beneath a section of storage shelves. She never dared to return and retrieve it. ---- Naeris communes with the glass staff during a quiet moment and learns its properties. Naeris’ add-ons: To the men’s disappointment, Naeris chooses to smugly strap her shiny, new magic longsword to her backpack rather than give it to any of them. Upon learning the glass staff’s properties, Naeris turns to Zaradur and mutters: “Alright, I forgive you. For now.” Sigrun also had her own, little breakdown after the hostage-drama involving the small family. Remembering her own tragic loss, she was thankful, that Mirna and her daughters escaped with their lives. When it came time to divide up the loot, Sigrun asked for three carnelians off Glasstaff's treasure for her own uses.
Glad your'e writing the recaps since I'm a forgetful individual I can always look back to your posts! Thank you Avianna!&nbsp;
These recaps are amazing! Thank you so much for doing them!

So glad to hear ya'll like 'em! ;D Chapter 4: Cragmaw Castle After the excitement of the Redbrand hideout, Sigrun left the town for a quiet spot of natural beauty. Here she inserted the three carnelians into the bark of a large tree and offered a prayer to her goddess, Sune: Beloved Sune, Lady Firehair Goddess of Love and Beauty please hear my prayer. Hold my heart and soul in your loving embrace and forge them as you will in the fires of passion so that I may be a resplendent beacon of your beauty and love Lady of Beauty, Lady of Love Presiding over the Gates of the Moon giver of my most precious gift open my spirit to joy open my mind to possibility open my heart to love. Heal me of hurt and release me from fear and insecurity. Grant me the innocence of true love so that I may see the world in all its promise and beauty. Grant me the wisdom of experience so that I may choose with sense, wisdom, and good judgment. May my eyes be keen may my vision be true. May my perception of others be accurate and uninfluenced by lies and deception. Sune, I pray to you, My Lady grant me the strength of your love so that it may shine to the world through me. If this be your will then so shall it be. Comforted that Sune was pleased with her offering, Sigrun returned to town and the rest of the party. On the way to Cragmaw Castle, the party decided to stop by Cragmaw hideout, where they first encountered the goblin marauders, to clear them out once and for all and secure the missing supplies for Linene Graywind of the Lionshield Coster. After their ordeals with the Redbrands, the party found the goblins now were hardly a challenge. The wolves, they had left alone the first time proved less friendly the second and after one pit Zaradur’s hand, the party killed two of the wolves and was finally able to subdue the remaining wolf and secure it by its chain. They went straight back to the goblin living area from where they had rescued Sidar. The large goblin, that had lead the goblins then had been demoted to a rotting corpse in the corner and the remaining goblins were cleared in short order. The bugbear, which lead the goblins proved a bit more of a challenge, but he soon fell victim to Naeris’ vicious psychic attacks and spent the remainder of the fight cowering in a corner until he was finally put out of his misery. The party took the gold and treasure for themselves and left the Coster’s supplies in the hideout for someone from Phandalin to pick up and moved on to Cragmaw Castle. Cragmaw Castle was a dilapidated ruin. The ground floor alone was mostly intact but everything else was rubble. Raynor and Elvalur scouted around the ruin and Elvalur found a side entrance, through which the party sneaked into the castle. Elvalur checked the doors along the way. They locked a group of goblins in the kitchen and moved on. With Elvalur’s masterful sneaking, the party was able to mostly keep the upper hand against the hobgoblins and other enemies they found along the way. Deep in the Castle ruin, they crossed a large room that lead to an altar-room. Thinking it empty, the party crossed it carelessly and Raynor nearly fell victim to a grick that suddenly dropped down from the back wall. The battle was relatively short once the surprise wore off. After the battle, Raynor went to investigate the curtains at the back wall and was struck down by a goblin arrow. The party battled the goblin priest and his two acolytes while Sigrun rushed to her elven friend’s aid. When the goblins were finally dead, Zaradur amused himself with trying to flip the altar while the other went to investigate the adjacent room. It turns out to be a kind of store room, where they find a staff and some bloodied armor. Helm spots a bottle of dwarven brandy which he quickly snatches up for himself. Past the storage room the party finds another room occupied by three hobgoblins. Naeris directs her attention to one hobgoblin and her cruel and vicious remarks laced with magic devastates the goblinoid to such a state it dropped its weapon and burst into tears. The remaining two hobgoblins were dealt with by the rest of the party in relatively short order. No one had the heart to fight the devastated hobgoblin and they left him tied up in his own misery and moved on. The party moved on to the east part of the castle ruins where they encountered more hobgoblins. Having learned from their blunder at the altar-room, the party moved cautiously, with Elvalur scouting ahead. They kept the upper hand in the following encounter in the guard barracks and Naeris saw no reason to involve herself in the fight against the two hobgoblins choosing instead to lean back and wait. She had to wait quite a bit as the two hobgoblins proved surprisingly tough and nimble. However, they eventually succumbed to the larger numbers stacked against them. While the rest of the party dealt with the hobgoblins, Naeris was distracted by angry yelling coming from past the door next to her. She overhears a loud growling voice demanding payment and a softer, smoother reply. Shortly after, an angry old bugbear barges out of the door, demanding what the ruckus is about, having apparently heard the noise of the battle against the hobgoblins. Naeris recognizes the old bugbear from a vision she had while investigating Cragmaw Castle back in Phandalin. It is King Grol, the leader of the goblins and hobgoblins of Cragmaw castle and someone whose brains Naeris very much would like to pick. Before she can do anything, Helm valiantly pulls her back and puts himself between Grol and the warlock. A wolf and female drow join the battle and as they fight, Naeris implores her companions to leave the bugbear alive, telling them she wanted to interrogate the bugbear. Seeing the drow, Zaradur comes over with a saucy grin and starts to flirt openly with her in the middle of the battle. Naeris would have none of that and she uses her Dissonant Whispers to attack the drow and drove her to flee in fright back into the room from whence she came. The wolf was eventually slain and the party was able to subdue Grol without killing him. While Naeris interrogated Grol, the rest of the party moved on into the room the drow had fled into. They found a human woman cowering in the corner and Gundren, roughed up and unconscious, but alive. Zaradur went to question the woman if she’d seen a drow run past while Sigrun and Raynor tended to Gundren. The woman suddenly attacked Zaradur, unarmed and outnumbered, she was easily beat down. She laughed and mocked the adventurers telling them they had no idea what they’d gotten themselves into before she died. Gundren was distraught and refused to leave Cragmaw Castle without his map. He didn’t know where it was, but they were able to find out its location from Grol and Gundren was more than happy to have his precious map back. Gundren assured the party he would be able to find his own way back to Phandalin, but the party didn’t like the idea of letting him leave with the map alone not knowing who else could be after him and the map. They were able to convince Gundren to leave the map with Sigrun, who promised to keep it safe. Once Gundren had left for Phandalin, the party moved on to explore the rest of the castle. Towards the south, they happened by a door with a heavy, wooden bar on the outside. Curious by what could be beyond such a door, the party opens it. They are greeted by a large, angry owlbear, who roars at them. Helm, who opened the door, swings and smashes his axe into it. Zaradur leaps up from behind, stepping on Helm’s shoulders to launch himself over the dwarf and straight into the owlbear’s face, axe first. He cleaves the fearsome beast’s head in two and it slumps dead to the ground. After a couple seconds of digesting the incredible display of Helm and Zaradur’s combined, savage might, the party moved on into the room to investigate. They find a chest tucked up above on a jagged ledge which Raynor manages to retrieve. Having locked the goblins fully inside the kitchen, the party decided to take a well-earned rest before clearing out the rest of Cragmaw Castle.
