Volo's Guide To Monsters: Can Monster Lairs Be Placed Into SKT Campaign?

November 04 (8 years ago)
Hi,

If our group purchase Volo's Guide on Roll20, will we be able to put the monster lairs into our Storm King's Thunder campaign? I recognise that we'll be able to drag and drop everything else in there but being able to easily add the lairs in might be a clincher for us.

Cheers,

John

I think you will be able to add the lairs to SKT, based on the posts in this thread.

If your campaign has the 5E Compendium attached to your campaign, then you'll automatically have access to Volo's content after purchase. With the exception of the seven lair maps, all of the book's content is in the Compendium. When you purchase this item, it unlocks readability of that part of 5th Edition Compendium.

The beast lair pages we're setting up a different method to let you essentially transmogrify them into your campaign without being a Pro user.

I should note, this "Transmogrify as not a Pro User" feature did not make it to launch, but it is very close. Once it's available we'll be going back and adding it retroactively for Volo's Guide. But for now you have to be either a Pro user to Transmogrify or you have to use the Lair Maps in a new game.

I will update this thread when the new feature is available, it should be in about 2 weeks or less. I just don't want anyone buying it based on that if that's the clinching factor.

Hi,

If i purchase Volo's guide it unlocks the creatures in the compendium. Will I be able to drag and drop those creatures onto the Shaped 5e sheet the same way I can with the existing creatures?

Slightly off topic but along the same vain, if I purchase Storm King's Thunder can I then Transmog mobs from that into other games I create?

Thanks

For the second part of your question, definitely yes.  You can Transmogrify creatures from a Game created with the SKT Module into any other campaign you have.

For the first part, I've not tired it yet, but it should work.  You might ask on the Character Sheet thread to be certain, or I'll give it a try tonight and post back.

I went ahead and checked.  If you create a Character in a Game with the Shaped Sheet, mark it as an NPC and drag the monster from the compendium onto it (I tried the Annis Hag), it imports just fine.

Thanks Aaron.

I tried it too, now bought Volo's. It takes the stats but i seem to lose the token and bio image and all the bio info each time. That's a shame. I guess it might be time to switch to OGL for the sake of saving some man hours.

I read there are 200 stated tokens in storm kings thunder. I assume that is a reasonable chunk of the monster manual and not 150 NPCs? I wonder if they will add the mobs in SKT to the compendium in the same manner as Volo's Guide. It would seem a logical way to go, having gated compendium content opened up by purchasing products containing that content, rather than needing to keep transmoging it from another game.

Also, dear Roll20, please add Curse Of Strahd to Roll20 :-)

I really appreciate the openness here. I really should just get a damned Pro account to support Roll20 but money is tight and I'd rather throw my money at the ridiculously good D&D content you're putting out.
