Evil campaign

I hear what y'all have been saying regarding an evil campaign, and the attraction is there for me too. With the knowledge that I haven't begun prepping a campaign just yet, this is the thread for y'all to bat around ideas for characters, group motivations, etc as I do some worldbuilding around you. The compass campaign will remain our main focus, of course, but the evil campaign might be a nice distraction from time to time. I will be creating a new Roll20 game and will invite you guys at some point down the line. Of course, you are not obligated to play in the evil campaign. Participation is voluntary, and if you don't think you'd enjoy it, don't have the time to take on another campaign, or really don't want to play for any reason, I certainly won't hold it against you. Let's lay down some ground rules! I want motivations behind your evil characters. Yes, the Joker was a fantastic villain in The Dark Knight Rises, but I don't want any characters who just want to watch the world burn. I'm not necessarily disallowing chaotic evil, but there needs to be a damn good reason for your character to be that way. Evil does not mean that this campaign becomes an outlet for antisocial tendencies. We're not going into deep descriptions of torture, sexual assault, or other particularly heinous crimes. While these acts may happen, I reiterate that there needs to be a compelling character or story reason for them. Should they occur, they will be glossed over as tastefully as possible. Y'know, within our group's standards. If something happens that makes any of us unreasonably uncomfortable for any reason, it will be immediately stopped. I feel like I know y'all as players and people pretty well at this point and I really don't think this will ever be a problem, but you know me: I gotta put it out there. :) The campaign will be urban, set in the city of Neverwinter, though you may adventure outside the city every now and then. The tone will be pretty similar to our current campaign's, but how you build out your party will certainly have an effect on it: a gang of street toughs will feel different than a politically motivated cabal which, of course, won't be the same as playing an evil cult. I want you guys to develop a cohesive idea of your party's organization, then I'll build the game around that! Theming is important: does your group have a name? A sigil? A secret handshake? I'm torn on whether or not this campaign should exist in the same universe as the compass campaign. I leave it up to you guys: do you want this to be a completely separate entity, or do you want this party to share the world of Raynor, Elvalur, Sigrun, Zaradur, Helm, and Naeris? I can already feel the optimization nerds crying out in ecstasy as I say this, but what power level do y'all want to start at? There's an attraction to starting at the bottom and clawing your way up, but you guys have done that already. Maybe we start a little deeper into your organization's story? Start your characters at level 3 or 5...or higher? Keep in mind that this campaign will focus on a single city, so you don't want to start too powerful, or you'll pretty much begin the game as rulers of the Neverwinter underworld. Sounds cool, till you realize there's not a lot of places to go from there. Still, I want to leave this up to you guys. I am damn proud to be running a game for players across five countries and three continents, but it can make scheduling a bear. Right now, I'm thinking we use our normal time slot and play the evil campaign once a month, or once every three weeks. Of course, this can all change, but I feel like that's a good starting frequency. Okay -- go!
Ahhh! So, I have Thoughts. For the campaign in general: 1) I think the easiest group setting would be a Mercenary guild since it's goons for hire. It also allows a good variety of needed skill sets/classes so people can try out different things and not be too limited. Also, it's super morally grey at best and downright evil at worst, imo. 2) I also like the idea of starting at a higher level. I vote lvl 5 because that's when we start getting cool stuff and since it looks like we're going to be playing it only once a month, starting much lower will make the story/encounters take forever. Lvl 5, imo, is a good starting point because they wouldn't be the lowest rungs in the city, but there will still be challenging encounters/people to go against. For my character ideas: Okay, so I would love to play a Bard one day, but I feel like I wouldn't be very good at it. In a Neverwinter setting, I have TWO character ideas I'm flip-flopping between: 1) Thief 2) Barbarian Race for both? GNOME. First, because a Gnome thief seems to fit. They're more tricksy than Halflings and being super small makes thieving easier, rp-wise. (Roll wise, that might be a different story, as evidenced by our terribad rolls yesterday. haha) BUT, I love to the point of ridiculousness the idea of a tiny Gnome Barbarian enforcer. Like this bitty thing is the MUSCLE. XD I've also been thinking about alignment for me. I don't think I'd be able to dive into the deep end of Evil, so I was thinking of keeping my character either Lawful Neutral (barbarian) or Chaotic Neutral (Thief). I don't have a fully fleshed out backstory idea yet because I'm not sure which class I'm going to pick but I think, as broad strokes, the Thief would be motivated by greed and self-preservation. The Barbarian would be more motivated by loyalty to someone and that loyalty is more important than anything, even if it means doing Very Bad Things. Anyway, those are my thoughts. :D

I'm pretty open on the role, I did have a character in mind, but I can try to change things to fall more in line with what the group is missing out on. I know I really like being a face, so focusing on that more might be kind of cool with a charisma based character. My main idea for an Evil Campaign would be a Half Elf Sorcerer, with an affinity for Fire. - Backstory would be something to the effect of, his family and village was completely wiped out by a Red Fire Dragon and he survived, driving his motivations. Seeing how he came out of the destruction stronger (probably where he got his Draconic side) he wants to do that for the world, burn it down so a better more powerful world can be rebuilt from the ashes, but he needs to rise to power to do so, and become as powerful as he can. He may also be a bit of pyromaniac though. I could change it up thought depending on what the group needs, and go something completely different, the Half Elf Sorcerer could fill damage dealing, AOE, and Face roles. But maybe a Bard who really just wants to rock or maybe wants to inspire evil in others since he's a little shifty and possibly a bit of a psychopath, if we need a healer. If we need a tank or a solo damage dealer there's a few ideas I might have too... I'm excited by the possibilities.

1) Mercenary guild's not a bad idea. It certainly fits with our tendency to solve problems through brute force. But I wonder if an evil organization wouldn't have a little more ambition than simply working as mercenaries. I think a gang of street thugs working to get out of the slums or try to overtake the Neverwinter underground would work just as well. That way we'd have a goal besides simply working jobs. 2) I second level 5. As for character ideas, I'm thinking either a tiefling assassin working her way up from the very bottom as best she can, or an estranged human noble eldritch knight (not sure of class yet). He apparently sodomized the already engaged, male heir of a higher noble, and the resulting scandal lead his family to disown him. He insists the supposed victim was a very enthusiastic participant. But of course the esteemed family can't suffer such a stain upon their name. Edit: RJ, I'd say focus on what you want to play first and party balance second. I'm confident we'll be able to make it work, say even without a designated healer. Just keep in mind that your character would need to function in a group setting and I wonder how "want to burn the world" and "act as face for the group" would work out in practice.

I can't remember what they're called; I need to check my notes. Zentarim? I think?

Working your way up the ladder of their organization might be interesting.

Not necessarily just want to watch it burn, but more so rise up to rule and then destroy to make the world stronger similar to Ra's al Ghul type thing. Although those motivations might change quite a bit, it's just kind of an initial idea, but purely driven to become more powerful works too :) EDIT: also as a face, the idea of manipulating those not party of his group would be exciting to him (which is why I could also go semi similar with a bard or something)
Well, if you can make it work, my character can get behind that. :)
Some things you guys might want to consider as a criminal or mercenary group: What's your gig? Are you enforcers? Do you run a protection racket? Second-story work? Assassinations? Blackmail? High-precision magical heists (perhaps not in this particular group's wheelhouse ;) )? Arson (more in this group's wheelhouse)? Intimidation and evidence removal? Secret-selling? Counterfeiting and forgery? Who are your clients? Do you bow and scrape to the politically powerful? Sell your skills to the wealthiest of society? Work for a particular gang, or organization, or even race? Are you in league with a cabal of secretive wizards, or beholden to a group of assassins? Perhaps there's a single person or being that you all owe allegiance to, and you are the hand by which they accomplish their insidious objectives? Do you have enemies? A rival mercenary company, perhaps? Have you run afoul of certain Neverwinter authorities? Stolen something from a powerful local figure? Maybe there's another group within your larger criminal organization that's jostling you for position and prominence. Did you piss off a priest of Bane? Did you piss ON a priest of Torm? Have you acquired something through your nefarious deeds that someone else wants badly enough to burn down the city? Even the dregs of the underworld have friends. Maybe a sewer-running goblin whispers secrets to you in exchange for scraps from your table. Perhaps you're in good with a captain of the local fighter's guild, or have a corrupt watch lieutenant on your payroll. A wealthy uncle, doing his best to keep his ne'er-do-well niece out of the crosshairs of the local authorities? An information broker with eyes and ears all over the city, happy to exchange his hoarded knowledge for drips and drops of information that would endanger your lives if your Zhentarim masters ever found out you were leaking? Hell, maybe you just have a big brother who's always looked out for you in the streets and back alleys of Neverwinter. And of course, separate from the goals and raison d'etre of the group, what do YOU want?
Well, I know what my ex-noble wants. He wants his comfy lifestyle back, and pay back his spineless ex and his wretched family for leaving him out to dry to save their own skins. On the other side, the ex's noble family would probably happily see my character dead or safely locked up for life. My tiefling on the other hand, would just want to carve out a place of her own in a world unfairly prejudiced against her.

Hell, maybe you just have a big brother who's always looked out for you in the streets and back alleys of Neverwinter. And of course, separate from the goals and raison d'etre of the group, what do YOU want? What I generally pictured for my Half Elf Sorcerer, is someone who tends to like to maneuver the pieces around the board a bit, making sure to influence the right people in the right ways. In the past he's specialized quite a bit in Blackmail, as it tends to go along with his smooth talking, but he did join the Alchemists and Apothecary guild, so he can learn a few tricks of the trade... such as making some fairly subtle poisons for when he might have some trouble with the less easily blackmailed folks of Neverwinter, as well as using them in "interrogations" and by interrogations I mean "smooth talk, then if it doesn't work as planned, use potions and poisons, and if still resistant he heats things up a bit by conjuring some fire." While much of his maneuvering has been a result of blackmailing he generally tries to hustle his way to the top with any dirty jobs he can get from the larger crime families/organizations, whether that be assassinations, heists, or the protection racket often resulting in one of his favorite things, Arson :) He uses the secrets, political pull, and power he gets from these jobs and blackmailing to reach new positions of power for himself and the few members of his crew he "trusts" as much as you can trust a group of criminals, but he still trusts them more than most. He always tries to gather additional information on "big scores" he can pull from within the Guild Artisans since they usually wind up being good for some valuable intel. His only friend outside of his crew, (which he keeps fairly quiet, only his crew really knows of her although still tries to meet with her in private) is a Dragonborn Druid named Akra, they met at a fairly young age. Both of them orphaned, him by a Red Fire Dragon who torched his family, but he rose from the ashes seeing it as almost a test of power, realizing his Draconic bloodline, and seeing it as a kind of cleansing by fire. She was orphaned by a group of radicals, who feared the Dragonborn, wiping out her family. They stuck together at a younger age, looking out for one another, working jobs together, both being able to talk their way into peoples wallets, and talk their way out of trouble. As they grew up, they both became more individuals, but came to each other whenever they could use a bit of help with some difficult matters. As far as the Sorcerer knew (still trying to think of a name for him), his friend Akra never wanted power or influence the way that he did, but definitely saw the advantages of it, and her Druidic Shapeshifting abilities were especially useful. Many times, she would be able to shapeshift into small animals like rodents in order to scout possible heists or get valuable information that was relayed to the Sorcerer. And for a time, he may have had deeper feelings for her, but knows it would only complicate things to act on those feelings, and he had bigger goals. When it comes to enemies... of course... it's hard to move your way up blackmailing and pulling jobs, without crossing a few people. The Sorcerer tries to focus more on moving forward, but he is worried about the possibility of some of the crews enemies teaming together to try to take them out at some point. But he attempts to calm even his enemies and their worries with some wisely chosen words, and possibly keeping them focused on other problems that may be on their plate, even if he has to create those problems himself and pin it on others to keep the focus off of him and his crew. -- I can obviously tweak this to fit more in line with other peoples stories (as we did with the compass campaign) but just kind of had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head, and wanted to get them down -- EDIT -- He found it easier to connect with Akra because of his Draconic bloodline and her being Dragonborn (also a Red Draconic Ancestry), it was something that provided that initial connection, and they often speak in Draconic to one another
So he was orphaned by a red dragon and then made friends with a red-scaled dragonborn? Hmmmm.... ;) Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that we're about to see Akra's backstory in this forum...

That's a valid point and I wanted to say that he saw being orphaned as cleansing him of weakness but that sounded really harsh, so with your help of provoking it this kind of helps: The Red Dragon that orphaned him, he saw as kind of a blessing, it awakened his own Draconic Bloodline and the power within him, and he kind of sees it as proving his own power by surviving. He never thought of being orphaned as a bad thing, his family was abusive to him and they were traveling con artists by trade all of whom he despised, he saw it as cleansing him of weakness when that Dragon turned them to ash. -- EDIT -- I would even go so far as to say, he had secretly wished for their demise long before the Dragon came along. -- Edit 2 -- He would feel a new found connection to his Red Draconic side, making him more inclined to befriend a Red Scaled Dragonborn at that young age.

Ahh! RJ, I love your backstory! So, I've been thinking about mine. I have decided to go with a Gnome Barbarian named Loopmottin Schappenackle, nicknamed "Loopy." I'm also going to use the "Urchin" background, though not super exactly. Loopy is a Rock Gnome whose parents were skilled jewel-makers in Neverwinter. Their wares were extremely well crafted and sought after. They sold to kings and nobility, but also to the more affluent criminals in the city as well. They figured coin is coin, no matter where it came from, and they weren't the ones actually *committing* the crimes, right? One day when Loopy was young, the Neverwinter guards came in and seized all of the family belongings, money, assets and arrested her father due to his connections to the criminal underworld. Connections?! All he did was sell jewelry! Except, that was enough for the magistrate to decide that Loopy's father was part of the criminal organisation, but showed 'mercy' on the Gnome and sentenced him to life in a Neverwinter cell as opposed to death. Loopy would later discover that a competitor had bribed the magistrate to have him arrest and sentence Loopy's father as a means to rid himself of competition. Once her father was thrown in jail, Loopy and her mother were left with nothing. Her mother was now banned from the Artisan Guild and could not make a living making jewelry any longer. Instead, she took up little odd jobs like cleaning or washing clothes, but they'd lost everything and lost the lifestyle they had been accustomed to. A few years later, Loopy's mother fell ill, but they couldn't afford the medicine to heal her; she passed, leaving a young Loopy alone in the city with no money and no home. She VOWED to find a way to free her father and to make the magistrate and her father's enemy pay for what they'd done to her family. Loopy had a lot of rage, and it often got her into trouble. One particularly harrowing experience left her almost for dead, hadn't it been for a fellow street urchin who patched her up, gave her some broth to fill her belly and warned her that if she kept being stupid, she'd most certainly die. If she died, who would free her father? So, Loopy learned to control her rage, letting it loose only when she needed it, but it was always there, beneath the surface. She took on some jobs that no one else wanted because they paid a bit more, and started to work her way up in the criminal organisation, saving every coin she could to build up a nest egg for her father's release. On top of the not-so-legal jobs she signs up for, she also spends nights at the local underground fighter's guild, entering in fights for coin whenever she has the time. Her motivation is revenge and her father's release. She usually visits his cell weekly, unless she's stuck on a job. Loopy is like a little rabid bunny, ready to tear people's faces off. RAWR!
I see the gnomish naming traditions have been kept alive. Excellent! :D Also, I dig the feral urchin child barbarian schtick. :D
Haha, Loopy sounds absolutely adorable Shelly! xD
I'm really digging Loopy :) I'm also really curious which way you're going to go Aviana, the Tiefling Assassin or the Ex-Noble Together we will all rise to power!!! *Booming Echoing Voice*
I live in fear of the character Patrick is going to post. ;)
Haha, thanks guys! That poster is pretty much exactly Loopy. XD I am crossing my fingers that Patrick rolls a Bard.

Haha, Fuzzus said: I have a vision of a chaotic evil punk-rawk dragonborn bard. O.o that would be so friggin' hilarious! xD RJ M. said: I'm also really curious which way you're going to go Aviana, the Tiefling Assassin or the Ex-Noble Together we will all rise to power!!! *Booming Echoing Voice* Well, since I've already spent a few hours picking out just the right noble families and don't even have a decent portrait for my tiefling, I might just go with the wayward noble. Here's what I got of his story so far: Dishonored noble of Waterdeep. Formerly in an illicit affair with Carn Manthar, heir to Ithnil Manthar. Accused of using his family's expertise of magic and rare substances to influence and seduce the Manthar heir for wealth and family secrets. (Manthar wealth based on mercenary fighting and trade in metals and perfumes.) The Eltorchul family had already suffered a blow about a generation earlier, when the then heir lost his mind in a magic-related accident and the family was forced to open up their esteemed academy to anyone who would pay, which caused the family esteem to plummet. They were just beginning to regain some of their lost esteem when Rakhar's scandal hit and the patriarch, Estan Eltorchul saw no other choice but to disown him. Rakhar was 3rd son out of 4 and his siblings are generally sympathetic towards their brother, though they do not approve of evil. Rakhar left Waterdeep for Neverwinter, where he had some connections, which could help him get settled. Mainly, the grizzled knight he squired for in his youth, who treats him as his own son. Manthar, however continues to bear animosity towards Rakhar, who they believe possess far too much information about their family affairs Though dishonored, Rakhar knows his way around high society and his regal bearing easily identifies him as one of noble upbringing. He is also generally a man of his word, so he's LE. I was thinking, if I could take the human traits variant of an extra feat and skill proficiency and take the observant feat, Rakhar could also have a knack for noticing little things, pick out those most likely to possess the juicy secrets and such and that way have amassed quite a bit of interesting info, not just about his own family and their business partners but also his dear friends the Manthars among others.
Rakhar will be awesome when it comes to navigating the nobility :) which would be some really great sources of information, power, influence, and wealth... *Sorcerer's eyes glisten with excitement*... (I really need to come up with a name for him)
Cool! So we have a couple of political animals and a former high society miniature rage machine. I'm sensing a theme of disgraced, fallen, or (and?) insane aristocracy. I'm picturing you meeting in a comfortable salon, hatching schemes and weaving webs of intrigue. Puts me in mind of the Illuminati or the Bilderberg Group -- puppetmasters of Neverwinter! None of this is necessarily true yet; it's just my observations and vibe perceptions. Feel free to refune as necessary! Also, last night I did a Fiasco/style character building exercise with my Star Wars group. It was a bit awkward, but it did lead to some really interesting relationships between the characters. If you guys are up for it, I'd run a similar group-building session that would go a long way towards fleshing out these characters and this world.

Ohh, what's a Fiasco/style character building exercise? Either way, I'm game for a group-building session. It sounds like fun! ^o^
Check it out, Aviana: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiasco_(role-playi... Look under the Gameplay section. Basically, we'd just do the Setup part with our characters.
A little late to the party xD So, I had this character in mind for a while: Camoro Blackweaver was the daughter of an innkeeper, ex-adventurer, named Bron Blackweaver. Bron was old and didn't have much anymore, but managed to keep his inn alive for a few years now, thanks to some of the gold he still had. However, in his past, he stepped on some toes to make his name, and these toes rose up to be powerful nobles in the city. These nobles decided to, literally, take the inn and turn it into a brothel. Apparently they needed more money and a new meeting point for their organization, and Bron was the last adventurer alive that messed up with them. No longer an adventurer, there wasn't much that Bron could do and his old contacts, were all already dead. Bron feared these nobles would come to get his family and tried to run, but didn't manage to get very far. They offered a place for Camoro if she worked in their brothel, to add to the humiliation because they knew Bron wouldn't agree. She considered it, to not put her family on an even worse situation, but her parents refused. Her mother, Eli, was killed while making a distraction so Bron and Camoro could run. Without a house or a safe place to run in the city, Camoro and her father fled Neverwinter and, while out, she trained with him for a year. After Bron's death, she came back, and is now seeking revenge. She could fight in the underground too, with Loopy from time to time. Maybe in some fixed matches, already starting an organization. Or got to know RJ's sorcerer, and she thought it could be a idea to team up to kick some nobles' ass. Just throwing out ideas :D However, if we are playing in the same Universe as the other characters, I could also play Fenneros, as Chuck suggested. "Moving from Famarane to Neverwinter in search for more power, Fenneros knew that what he was doing before, in the elven village, was child's play. Neverwinter was the big league and he thought he would be ready for it. Couldn't have been more wrong. He wanted his first move to make a statement, to show everyone how dangerous he could be. In fact, the only thing he did was piss off a lot of nobles that now were out to get him. These nobles tried a move to stall Fenneros, throwing him into the court for some of his troubles in Famarane. Lucky for him that he had some "friends" in the Neverwinter guard. And an old friend that still needs to be put away and could take his place in prison, if it comes to it." Just had this idea about Fenneros. Still need to flesh out a little bit.

Got a name finally. Vanithal Turamarth or Van for short. Turamarth roughly translates to Conquerer of Fate, he chose a new family name since he hated his family before they were turned to ash. - was going to find a last name that was closer to "risen from ash" but it felt too on the nose
Camoro sounds cool! Classic revenge character. I like her a lot. What race/class are you thinking for her? The more I think about you playing Fenneros, the worse of an idea I think it is. I need to be free to use him however I want in the Compass campaign, and it's going to hamstring me if I have to consider him in the Evil campaign. So we'll consider the worlds contemporaneous, but unconnected.......for now. ;)

Well done! :D
I like both of those Matheus, they're both awesome and could really evolve onto some cool characters :) any ideas as to what classes or races they might be?
Really liking both character ideas, Mat! Another vengeful lass to join the Vengeance Inc! Would be so cool to see the story from Fenneros' perspective too! Awesome, RJ! Really liking the surname meaning. Also, sorry but couldn't resist: Van the Man, drives the minivan! ;D

Colossus Slayer and Ranger spells would be so sweet, but on the hand, some of the Ranger features might be a bit wasted in an urban environment. And the fighter, both so nicely straight-forward and so many tanking and damage-dealing possibilities. If it helps any, I decided to make Rakhar a nimble, lightweight fighter focusing on dex and int over str and con.

"Urban ranger" is a pretty classic variant class; I have a feeling RJ could probably point you in the right direction of a 5E version. ;) And it's your character for sure, but the idea of a two-weapon fighting specialized ranger out for revenge is just so damn cool to me, for some reason!

Oh yeah if you want to rock a Ranger there's a few things I could send towards you for the more Urban Ranger to help you with any decisions you may have especially with some of the Unearthed Arcana stuff. But there's also a lot of kick ass stuff with the fighter, I mean those action surges and all the extra attacks they get are crazy, and there are a couple new things in Unearthed Arcana for fighters too, just to vary it up if you want to. -edit I'll shoot you some stuff for it tomorrow, doing some running around at the moment
Thanks for the help everyone :D I'm looking for some stuff in the books and around the internet too. It's not making the decision easier haha

Ah, but you get to make all the characters you want without the need to pick one :D
Ah, yes technically we're all free to make all the characters we want. Doesn't mean we get to play them though. DMs aren't really free to play their own characters in their games, because they can't play them on the level of the players.
