New Travel Rules

Hey guys - so, I totally didn't except you all to go on such a long journey so quickly in Session 3! You caught me unprepared for managing that journey effectively, so I'd like to discuss how we'll handle these (increasingly common) multi-day journeys moving forward. Goal: promote realistic preparation of long journeys, without bogging down the game in minutia. Exhaustion As detailed on /page 291/ of PHB: Level 1 : Disadvantage of ability checks Level 2 : Speed halved (including On-Foot Pace , below) Level 3 : Disadvantage on attack roles and saving throws Level 4 : HP maximum halved Level 5 : Speed reduced to zero (including On-Foot Pace , below) Level 6 : Death A long rest that doesn't increase exhaustion (see Camping , below) reduces your level of exhaustion by 1. On-Foot Pace Slow : ~15-18 miles per day (3 hexes on the Sword Coast map) Normal : ~20-24 miles per day (4 hexes on the Sword Coast map). DC10 check against STR (Athletics) or suffer 1 level of exhaustion; no save necessary if you have access to mounts/vehicles. Can use CON instead of STR (Athletics) at your discretion. Fast : ~25-30 miles per day (5 hexes on Sword Coast map). DC15 check against STR (Athletics) or suffer 1 level of exhaustion; mounts/vehicles reduces check to DC10. Can use CON instead of STR (Athletics) at your discretion. Camping Normal Terrain : Individual WIS (Survival) check (DC10) or suffer 1 level of exhaustion. Can use CON instead at your discretion. Use of 1x Camping Supply  eliminates this check for entire group. Difficult Terrain: Individual WIS (Survival) check (DC15) or suffer 1 level of exhaustion. Can use CON instead at your discretion. Use of 1x Camping Supply  reduces check to DC10 for entire group. Note that Difficult Terrain also halves On-Foot Pace, above, per PHB. Camping Supplies are sold by any provisioned that would sell rations, rope, etc. - including Barthen in Phandelin - and covers all the materials necessary for a single night of camping for a group of 3-6 characters. Each set of camping supplies weighs 2lbs and costs 2 gold . (Note that just a day's rations for 5 characters would cost 2.5 gold per the PHB, but it is implied you're getting some economy of scale here by prepping for an entire group.)
Your trip to Agatha's Lair was 26 hexes (there and back), meaning: * At a slow pace (which is the pace we used on Sunday) the group would need to make camp 8 times. Avoiding all exhaustion checks would cost 16 gold. There would be a total of ~33 random encounter rolls. * At a normal pace the group would need to make camp 6 times. Without horses or vehicles you would make 7 checks against exhaustion (using the "easy" DC10) and it would cost 12 gold to avoid exhaustion checks at night. There would be total of ~25 random encounter rolls. * At a fast pace the group would need to make camp 5 times. Without horses or vehicles you would need to make 6 checks against exhaustion (using the "moderate" DC15) and it would cost 10 gold to avoid exhaustion checks at night. There would be a total of ~21 random encounter rolls.
