Associating Journal Tokens with their respective character

So, by editing a character's journal, you can set their default token. Seems great. However, when I drag the Journal from the sidebar onto the map, the resultant token is still set to "None/Generic Token" for what it represents. Makes the default token feature seem a bit pointless, since at that point it's no different from just dragging a token from the artwork section and manually setting it to a character. Is there some detail I am missing that helps automate this a bit more? Thanks for any help.
from what i understand you set default after confirming the token with whoo it represents and linking the HP and what not plus vision only then should it allow drag the new default token settings. failing that i use a page to setup my tokens and copy paste them to the needed pages

Make sure that you follow the steps here. https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals The main thing as lordmage points out is to completely set up the token before setting the token as the default token for the character.
Ok, I get it now. For some reason, I assumed that the default token was purely an image thing, and that it would otherwise set character control based on the journal. But now I understand it actually is based on all it's paramaters, which you need to set beforehand. Thanks!
