[LFP][5E D&D] The Lurker in the Darkness (Saturday late night game)

Edited 1519155466
The civilized realms are narrow and constricted. Always the forces of the Shadow press upon its borders, seeking to enslave its populace, pillage its riches and steal its treasures. If it were not for a stout few, many in the realms would indeed fall prey to the evil which surrounds them. Yet, there are always certain exceptional and brave members of humanity, as well as similar individuals among its allies - dwarves, elves, halflings, dragonborn and others - who rise above the common level and join battle to stave off the darkness which would otherwise overwhelm the land. You are indeed members of that exceptional class, adventurers who have journeyed to Kendall Keep in search of fame and fortune. Of course you are inexperienced, but you have your skills and a heart that cries out for adventure. You have it in you to become great, but you must gain experience and knowledge and greater skill. There is much to learn, and you are willing and eager to be about it! Each of you has come with everything which could possibly be given you to help. Now you must fend for yourselves; your fate is in your hands, for better or worse. Ahead, up the winding road, atop a sheer-walled mount of stone, looms Kendall Keep. Here, at one of civilization's strongholds between the  Yeomanry Freehold and the lands of the Shadow, you will base yourselves and equip for forays against wicked monsters that may lurk in the wilderness. Somewhere nearby, amidst the dark forests and tangled fens, are the Caverns of Fellmoor where fallen creatures lie in wait. All this you know, but before you dare adventure into such regions, you must become acquainted with the other members of your group, for each life will depend upon the ability of the others to cooperate against the common foe. Now, before you enter the grim fortress, is the time for introductions and an exchange of information, for fate seems to have decreed that you are to become an adventurous band who must pass through many harrowing experiences together on the path which leads towards greatness. The Lurker in the Darkness is a new game using 5th edition D&D rules set in the world of  Greyhawk . The game has not yet begun. Session 0 will be held as soon as I have enough players. I'm looking for six players and currently have five. This is a weekly game that's voice-only and will run every Saturday evening from 11 pm to 4 am Pacific time (7 am to 12 noon GMT). We will be using Discord to communicate and Roll20 for maps, miniatures and combat. If you're interested in joining, please apply below and be sure to read the rest of this post closely. While I'm not averse to new players, I'm mainly interested in players who prefer narrative-focused, story-driven games over combat-heavy games. The ratio of RP to combat in this game will probably be 55/45 but I can adjust as needed. As a DM, I usually emphasize story over mechanics most of the time. Allowed books and resources are Player's Handbook, Unearthed Arcana and Xanathar's Guide to Everything. Volo's Guide to Monsters is also allowed, but PC races from that book are on a case-by-case basis. No evil PCs, please. Character generation will be your choice of 27 points or 4d6, drop lowest die and re-roll 5 more times. PCs will begin at 1st level. Please do not submit a character when you post your application. Would you please answer these questions below instead? Detailed answers are preferred, whenever possible. The purpose of the questionnaire is to tell me a little bit about your point of view and who you are as a gamer. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? Do you prefer epic quest storylines or nonlinear plotlines? Why? Do prefer dungeons, wilderness adventures, or would you prefer scenarios in an urban setting, or a mix of all three? Please express your preferences as a ratio of percentages. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? What are your gaming pet peeves? Do you like hack-and-slash, riddles or role-playing, or a mix of all three? How much RP to combat is ideal for you? Please express your preferences as a ratio of percentages. Please describe a favorite moment from a previous game. Who are your favorite fantasy or sci-fi fictional authors? Besides D&D, what other RPGs have you played in the past and which do you prefer? (Computer games and MMORPGs like World of Warcraft don't count.) What are you currently reading, and why? What is your favorite movie of all time, and why? If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children? Do you have any questions for me? If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading the above wall of text. Hope to hear from you soon.
Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all?  - My Names Marc, i'm 20, and fairly new to roll 20. Recently got into playing DnD and cant get enough of the stuff. I've had a few sessions in another campaign on here and think I've pretty much picked up everything i need to know.  What do you look for in D&D games that interest you?  - The thing i mostly enjoy in D&D is thinking outside the box / cheating the system so to speak. I love seeking alternate ways to progress in the story. When i say this i mean using persuasion, intimation etc to maybe cut the price of an item or service, or maybe turn the tide in combat. Do you prefer epic quest storylines or nonlinear plotlines? Why? - Although the epic quests do give you a sense of accomplishment, i feel the non linier plot lines are the most fun, simply because it gives the play the abillity to have a little more fun with each scenario and be as creative as they can.  Do prefer dungeons, wilderness adventures, or would you prefer scenarios in an urban setting, or a mix of all three? Please express your preferences as a ratio of percentages. - Urban 40% Wilderness 30% Dungeons 40% Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favourite? - I preffer the fighter class, simply because i like playing the type of character that rushes head first into danger, no matter the odds. What are your gaming pet peeves? - I dont really have any Gaming pet peeves, im just gratefull to play , so nothing really bothers me. Do you like hack-and-slash, riddles or role-playing, or a mix of all three? How much RP to combat is ideal for you? Please express your preferences as a ratio of percentages. Roleplaying 40% Riddles 35% H&S 25% Please describe a favourite moment from a previous game. - Me and the party arrived in a town and got drunk in the tavern / inn. My character thought it would be funny to take all of the numbers off the room doors so that no-one knew which room was there. After everyone had a nights rest we found out that one of the part spent the night with our goblin companion / prisoner / friend ( it was a weird situation). Anyway my character spoke to the party and managed to get a refund for our nights stay because of this as he persuaded the owner that their security was not good enough. He also got a free nights stay, and then managed to get the money for the second night by telling one of the npc's (that was in charge of paying for the rooms) that the barman  owner was asking for payment for the second night stay. I offered to pay it for him while he ate his breakfast nd even offered to buy him a pint. Needless to say i pocketed that two gold, and bought him a pint for good measure :) Who are your favorite fantasy or sci-fi fictional authors? - Its generic i know but i love my main G.R.R Martin. Also love Barnard Cornwells The Last Kingdom, its not fantasy but a non fiction medieval story, so basically game of thrones but without dragons. Besides D&D, what other RPGs have you played in the past and which do you prefer? (Computer games and MMORPGs like World of Warcraft don't count.) - DnD is pretty much the only role playing game I've played. I hope it does get me involved in other RPG's because id love to get to know other ways of playing, im pretty much down for anything. What are you currently reading, and why? - The Last Kingdom Series - Love the character, love the setting and i love the authors style of writing. What is your favorite movie of all time, and why? - It has to be Life Of Brian. I know its not the best film in the world but its special to me. I have fond memories of watching it with the fam, plus I've always had a special admiration with monty pythons humour, after all these years it still gets me in tears of laughter.  If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children? - "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.. The man who never reads lives only one" Do you have any questions for me? - Nope
Hey Marc, Thanks for replying. We're full now, due to a player who applied on a recruit thread I posted on Facebook. But if an opening appears in the future, I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks! S.
