Maps that combine well with Devin Night's paid tokens.

I hope this is the right place to post. I have been battling with one aspect in Devin Night's (paid) Tokens for a long time. I love the non-human tokens so much, but the humans always had faces I really disliked. But today I noticed that the faces look good with my current zom settings! that was amazing :D I love his work so much, only had that pet peeve. Now I was thinking, which maps combine best with Devin's tokens? I have been using Gabriel Picard's maps, and probably nothing can get close regarding variety and consistent art style. But I am curious, if there is any alternative out there, an artist that fits even better with Devin's paid content. I am very demanding regarding art, but I think it can be so important for the game... So do you guys have any suggestions? EDIT: Or, are there any tokens that go really well with Gabriel Pickards work? and by the way, I come with these questions after trying to find matching content on the marketplace for a LONG time.

I mix-and-match a lot of differing artists in my games. I may not have the same requirement for consistency in my games as your request, but I can visualize what you're asking. Devin's tokens with Gabriel's maps is a pretty high-level combination. Looking in the category of Top-Down tokens, with fantasy near-realistic map tiles. Sounds like looking to avoid any pog tokens (circle with face), or perspective tokens/maps or full body tokens. For more token choices, Vanderforge would be compatible alongside Night's: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... For maps, Russ Hapke Scene Additions & Druid series would work, but not adding a lot of environmental diversity compared to what you already have, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search/?keyw... Maps, Saul Wynn, Mega-Map packs: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... The official tiles from Wizards of the Coast products, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/bundle/19/du... There are honestly a lot more. Darkwoulf's tokens. Meditating Monkey art. Brass Badger maps. The Marketplace is really expanding and growing with many new artists coming in recently too. Some other members of the community may come along to recommend more.
Great answer Gold, really appreciate it! Vanderforge has some amazing tokens :D regarding maps, I knew the first two, and I think I have some Russ Hapke content already in my library. and the map bundles I completely missed, they looked like something more than just art to me when they came out, so I did t even consider it. again, thank you :)

Hello What about David North for tokens and Brass Badger maps ? :)
Thanks Pantoufle! Brass Badger could combine with Devin's tokens... David North is not really the type of art I am looking for. Too expressive, detailed, intense.

Gabriel's stuff is about as good as it gets, I have several. Some of them are so good I am trying to find justifications to buy them.
GP's stuff is amazing, but I just feel like it does not match Devin night's paid tokens well. Basically, Gabriel's art goes towards the photorealistic/ computer generated - and Devin's work is high detail drawing + simple shading and tetxures. It is an ok match, but I wondered if there was some better match out there.

I like to use Gabriel's Red Cap's Maps sets: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search/?keyw.. They're construction sets, so you'll need to put more time into map making than with his premade stuff, but I think they make some pretty great results:
Thanks The Aaron! They do look interesting, a hand drawn style, pretty cool. Like the first map specially - so cozy haha

That one was fun! A Wizard’s Hostel long deserted and corrupted. Teleportation between areas, round little rooms themed after different wizardly disciplines in various states. The players had no idea what they’d find next. Had several different identical hallways and keyed teleport pads so they would be confused about where they had been and were going. Was great fun!

I'll say, when I test my maps and tiles, I specifically use Devin Night tokens to be sure they look good and blend well with my maps and tiles. I've always been a huge fan of Devin's work, and seeing the topic being specifically maps made with his tokens in mind, I figured I would chime in to relay that is exactly my goal in the testing phase of my work. Other artists I would recommend that were not listed here already would be Mythic Portals and Chibbin Groove. The style is very similar to the other artists already listed, and I'm a big fan of those two as well. PS thanks Gold for the plug too! Happy Rolling!

i use gabriels sets too and for me the best results are to make my own (portrait) tokens from fantasy art f.e. https://postimg.cc/image/c6vqxik23/

Looks like I'm late to the party. I'm glad you like my work. Explain the dislike for the faces/heads, is it the angle? There are times where I don't like the extreme angle of them and have thought about changing them. At the very least I could offer a pack of heads that could be pasted over existing heads that had a more top down appearance. Great topic. <--- that's my ego talking

Heya Devin! Cool to see you answer :) Hope I can give some constructive feedback about the faces. looking at Devin Token pack 45 as an example. EDIT: thanks keithcurtis for the reminder to post a link! three tokens, to compare. * token 13, a warrior woman, with a ponytail. Face looks good, it feels like the proportions are acceptable, and it seems to be a 3D face in a top down view. * token 15, ranger type with a hat with a feather. face looks very flat, does not look female and the stare is robot like. Maybe changing the eyebrows a bit and toning down the cheekbones would help with a more female look. Of course some woman have eyebrows like this, same for cheekbones. But taking in account the forced low detail from the angle, you could benefit from some easier to identify gender features. Changing the shape of the eyes could help with the stare. And flat face could be helped with selectively stronger lines, maybe, but not too sure there. * token 30, tattoo on his bald head, red cape, holds fire. Face is better, but he looks like a character that is about to tell a silly joke. Seems to be cross-eyed, and his smile seems very snarky, because it goes way too high. The problem as a whole could be best described as somewhat unnatural expressions and a dimensional feel that is off. Not all your human tokens are like this, but quite a few of them are. A general but work intense option would be to model a 3D face, and use the camera in the program to get a perfect, realistic angle. Blender is a program I have used for this. I hope you see that I really like your work, and I am just trying to explain what I think could be improved. Also consider that I am actually very picky with the art I use, and even for me it was not a substantial problem while using on roll20, after I tried them out at that scale. It was the zoomed in version (that one gets as a sneak peak in the marketplace) that accentuated this.

Thanks for the feedback. Finding a good angle for the face is something that plagues me. As I try to constantly get better I go back and forth a lot on the angle of the head. I really want to move away from the upward angled face, but you do lose a lot of the character when you can only see the top of the head. It's safe to say I have had good days and bad days and some are better than others. Thanks!

FWIW, when I illustrate my own tokens, I tend toward the upward turned face. I greatly prefer tokens from artists who do likewise. It may not be entirely naturalistic, but it's a small concession for a great return in the character of the piece.

I understand, top down art is a challenge! I tried it myself, but creating tokens was way too hard for me. I also think that looking up is a better alternative, and actually it is barely noticeable in your work. anyways, thanks for the replies guys!
