A successful conclusion to experimentations
with death
Book Two,
Chapter 2.1 (session 45, 29 th March 2018)
Franz, Mads and
Augustus managed to fight off the wraiths and wights, aided by constant sniping
from Jamna, lurking in the undergrowth but the constant shower of fireballs,
magic missiles and cones of cold from the lurking, invisible wizard took their
toll. One after the other, Franz and Augustus fell, leaving Mads fighting for
his life, encircled by a horde of ravenous zombies and being picked on by the
invisible wizard.
Jamna scurried from
unconscious body to unconscious body feeding potions of healing and then with
Franz began to hunt through the mist for the invisible wizard. All the while
Mads and Augustus chopped at zombies that refused to fall and ducked firebolts
and other spells from within the mist.
Eventually (as
confirmed by Franz’s startling knowledge of wizardly spell durations) the
invisible wizard had to step away and recast Greater Invisibility on himself.
Unfortunately for him, eagle-eye Jamna saw the flicker of his red robes through
the trees and heard the muttering of his casting, and took careful aim at the
location with zen-like concentration. And shot him dead centre in the chest;
coughing and surprised he lost his concentration and became visible, much to
his consternation.
Almost instantly a
barrage of missiles slammed into him as Augustus charged him down. In the end,
he appropriately enough fell to one of Jamna’s Sneak Attack shots. Meanwhile
Mads shrugged off the remaining zombies and cut them down finally.
There followed a
bit of rummaging through the abandoned Survivors Camp, where there was nothing
of value just some half-eaten corpses. A search of the corpse of the wizard,
however was more profitable resulting in some bracers, and a couple of potions.
Having ended this
threat to the elven survivors, the party headed back to Altand, arriving at
about 19:00 in time to have supper around the fire pits and catch up with
Naergon who seemed much recovered after his extended rest. Once again the
matter of what to do next was discussed – it seems clear that the effort to
recover Mads’ glaive is too important to be ignored.
So a good night’s
sleep and a trek back to the dragon’s lair in the morning appear to be the
order of business.
We leave the party
assembling their gear in the pre-dawn chill of an early spring morning . . .
