You’ve made it further than ever before – and no-one technically died Book Two, Chapter 2.1 (session 46, 5 th April 2018) So a long trudge through the Misty Forest, leaving the welcoming warmth of Altand behind and plunging once again into the tangle of thorns and underbrush around Chuth’s lair. All along your route small animals and birds, lizards and ferrets watch your progress, eyes gleaming out of the ever present mist. You know you’ll be expected. At the waterfall, a plan emerges. Jamna casts invisibility and together with Franz sneaks onto the entrance ledge and puts an immovable rod in place. The rest of you close up on the pathway and Naergon casts wall of force to deflect the waterfall stream down into the passage and tunnel beyond. After 10 minutes, Jamna works her way into the tunnel and slipping sliding, skates down to the bottom landing in a heap but keeping sufficient wits about herself to maintain her invisibility. The floor is wet but not to any great depth. Across the hall voices in the dark are muttering and cursing and calling for torches from deeper in the lair. Franz follows Jamna down the treacherous slope, sliding along the wall and just about maintaining his balance as he merges into the deeper shadows. Above Mads drinks a potion of fly and drifts down the tunnel, his devil sight revealing a number of cultists at the bottom of the tunnel, engrossed in wringing out clothing and calling for torches and generally being in a bad mood. On the entrance ledge Naergon casts polymorph and turns Augustus into a huge ape, whilst also casting more and more defensive spells on himself. A fight breaks out below as some elven looking commoners bring forward lit torches from within the lair and Dragonclaws cultists attack Jamna, Franz and Mads. As the fight intensifies, numbers of crossbow bolts begin to shatter around our heroes. Chuth attempts to dominate Mads but fails. Augustus the ape comes swinging down the tunnel and crushes two cultists to pulp. A secret door opens near him and ettins burst forth shouting and leering and lay into the ape with battle-axe and morning star. A Dragonfang cultists comes forth and hurls balls of cold at Augustus and Franz. Jamna, no longer invisible and badly hurt scrambles back away form the cultists, more crossbows fire from the dark. Chuth roars and sweeps above his minions and breaths poison up the tunnel, Jamna and Franz fall. Mads is hurt, the ape is badly wounded. More ettins burst forth but the tide turns as Mads and the ape chew through the cultists. Naergon glides down the tunnel and slams another wall of force in place cutting the ettins off from their supports. Chuth roars in frustration. The ape falls and Augustus returns to himself, the ettins flail at Mads and Augustus. Just as they finally kill the last and rush to pour potions into Franz and Jamna, more enemies appear from the tunnel beyond the secret door – Dragonfang and a heavily armoured crossbowman emerge and lay into Augustus. More can be seen moving in the deep shadows.
