[LFP][5E][Tuesday at 8:30 PM Pacific][Greyhawk/Homebrew] The Knight of Diamonds

Edited 1533236355
Your party is now approaching the Village of Jemison, having ridden up from the lands of the Bitter Coast. You are poorly mounted, badly equipped, and have no large sums of cash. In fact, all you have is what you wear and what you ride, plus the few coins that are hidden in purses and pockets. What you do possess in quantity, though, is daring and desire to become wealthy and famous. Thus you have come to Jemison to learn. Is this indeed a place for adventurers to seek their fortunes? You all hope, of course, to gain riches and make names for yourselves. The outcome of this is uncertain, but your skill and daring, along with a good measure of luck, will be the main ingredients of what follows, be it for weal or woe. The small community at the crossroads is a completely unknown quantity. What is there? Who will be encountered? Where should you go? These are your first explorations and encounters, so chance may dictate as much as intelligence. Will outsiders be shunned? Are the reports true — is the whole community engaged in evil practices? Are the folk here bumpkins, easily duped? Does a curse lay upon those who dare to venture into the lands which were once held by the Shadow? All of these questions will soon be answered. The dusty, rutted road is lined with closely-grown hedges of brambles and shrubs. Here and there it cuts through a copse or crosses a rivulet. To either hand, forest and meadow have given way to field and orchard. A small herd of cattle graze nearby, and a distant hill is dotted with stone chimneys with thin plumes of blue smoke rising from them. A road angles west into the hill country, and to either side of the road ahead are barns and buildings — Jemison at last! The adventure begins... The Knight of Diamonds is a game using 5th edition D&D rules set in the world of Greyhawk . It's ok if you don't have prior experience with that setting. There will be A LOT of information provided for you in the game forum. This is a weekly game that's held on Roll20 and runs every Tuesday evening from 8:30 pm to 1 am Pacific time (GMT -8). Discord is used for voice and you must have a working microphone and headset. If you're interested in joining, please post a reply below. I'm looking to fill two openings. Allowed books are Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Volo's Guide to Monsters. PC races from Volo's are okay, on a case-by-case basis. Other books or resources such as Unearthed Arcana may be allowed, subject to DM's discretion. No evil PCs, please. Character generation will use 27 point buy. Please be sure to take a moment to read everything below before submitting an application. Please do not submit a character when you post your application.  To ensure that we are all on the same page, here are my basic expectations regarding this game: Good play isn't a win/lose kind of thing. Player characters are expected to work together; major conflicts might erupt that you will eventually get patched up given some time. Lone wolf-type characters probably won't work; ditto for PvP. Your job as a player is to set a goal for your character and to pursue it proactively while still keeping within the parameters of the story which will involve consideration of the group. My role to the rules is to follow them, come what may. This also involves any house rules. After many sessions of play, a player decides to have her character side with an enemy. This is something that, ideally, shouldn't happen unless the character was magically influenced in some way that would cause such an event to occur. In that case, if it did occur, this condition will only last until the other player characters find out and do something about it. This game runs best when characters are written with extensive backstories or histories that take full advantage of the game world AND are created with the intention of co-creating the game world with the other players and the DM on a collaborative basis. The amount of RP to combat in this game will be about 60/40 but can be adjusted depending on the preferences of the group. The game is set in a version of Greyhawk that will deviate from established canon. The actions of the PCs have a chance to influence or shape the history of the world. Players may be asked to do some world-building on occasion. For this game to work, you have be able to commit to the schedule and you also have to show up on time. Would you please answer these questions? Detailed answers are preferred whenever possible; by "detailed", I mean that I'm not looking for 1-2 sentence replies. The ideal player is someone who puts a little effort and thought into answering the questions below. The purpose of the questionnaire is to tell me a little bit about your point of view and who you are as a gamer. Please be sure to answer all of the questions. 1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? 2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? 3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? 4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. 5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. 6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? 7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it. 8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. 9.  Describe a character concept in 5 sentences or less. The concept is not final. It is simply a way for me to see how you go about developing a character and what type of game you're looking for. It can be a character you'd like to play or it can be a character you have played in a previous game, either from 5th edition D&D or from a previous edition of D&D. 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. 11. Do you have any questions for me? Thanks for reading and good luck!
1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? My name is Matt and i have been playing DnD for about 4 years now as a DM and occasional player. I am very go with the flow and am not a big stickler for rules unless it will have a huge impact on the game.   2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? I love character interactions with each other and the NPCs throughout the world. Also exploring uncharted territories of a world.   3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? I prefer RP, but do enjoy combat. Making sure spells are rightly used is important as I love spellcasters, and probably from my DM experience.   4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. I usually don’t like when player blatantly ignore the story or other players when it doesn’t seem called for.   5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. I when you reach the climax of the story when you take on the big bad of the arc or campaign.   6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? No prefered class. I like to change it up every campaign.   7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it. I usually don’t like when travel takes forever and there is nothing that happens. There was a game where we played for 3 hours and we just travelled to the next city. I would have prefered some sort of encounter.   8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. I had a player that was constantly on his phone and never really listened to the story or others. We simply asked him to stop that unless it was extremely important and that seemed to have worked. A tiefling child who was thrown out of orphanages as he developed sorcerer abilities. Shadowy mist manifested from his body and he did not know why. As he starved on the streets, he was taken in by a local thieves guild. They trained him to harness his powers and trained him to be an assassin. He eventually left as he was uncomfortable killing others for reasons he did not seem fit and is now being chased by same guild. 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. Easy-going, funny, charismatic 11. Do you have any questions for me? None at the current moment. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Hey Matt, Thanks for replying. Unlike other games you may have played in the past - in this one, the existing players have a say in who joins. I'll send you a PM in a minute with the link to our Discord. Thanks, T.

1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? I'm a gamer and have always loved getting immersed into another world. I've been playing tabletop RPGs for around 8 years. Mostly different editions of D&D, but some others in there as well. Such as Star Wars and Dragon Age.  2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? Having a world lively enough to get me immersed into. RP is the most important thing to me for tabletops. Whether it be with PCs or NPCs. 3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? Story and fluff. Running narratives and story elements with mechanics in mind is boring. I've essentially killed a creature with mage light. :D 4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. Restrictions on character creation. Sticklers for the rules/following the book word for word. Developers not making as many good games in this day and age. (Not tabletop related) 5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. Well, there are so many I've enjoyed. So, I guess I'll pick the most ironic one. My only good character ever destroyed the universe and THEN became kind of Starlanding THEN ran for our lives. We didn't make it. XD  6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? Wizard. Bar, none. Built off of intelligence. Typically range based class. Shoots spells and shit. What's not to love? I like the concept of Wizards being secluded in their own environment. Away from others. I guess it feels relatable for me. (That being said, I do play other stuff.) 7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it. I guess it'd have be the situation leading up to the destruction of the universe. The DM had his own character in the game as a PC. (He asked us and we agreed about 3 sessions before it ended) Well, we eventually got tired of his PCs personality and circled him and 2 held him by the arms. We were questioning him about what he did with one of the PC's items. He had clearly sold it and wouldn't tell us how much he made from it. Anyway, I pulled out my 1:1 wand of wonder and aimed it at him. I said the activation word and rolled the world ending event. (That turned into more of a story really...) 8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. Another player. It still happens from time to time, but he's just a moody individual. It'll either be about RPing or some other random crap. It lead to me creating a new character on our third session because he mentioned something about me always playing the leader. So, I dropped my Wizard and created a Bardbarian. He started "leading" the group. We blew up a brothel and he pissed off a god... I have played this concept a couple times. Each time a bit different. A stealthy Wizard. Starts by Wizarding it up and learning stuff. Has a background for the sneakier side. Can take levels in Rogue if wished. As time goes on, develops some spells or abilities to be able to cast silent spells. Not the Subtle Spell metamagic, but an actual spell that is silent. Such as a fire ball rocketing through the air, but not making any noise. (Unfortunately, I have never gotten him to that point. The campaigns I've used him in ended before he could become anything special.) 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. Uncaring, introverted, imaginative. 11. Do you have any questions for me? Is this a low magic or no? Sorry, if it was mentioned. I don't recall seeing it anywhere.
Hi Lucifer, Thanks for your interest and for filling out the app. Your answer to Q9 was a bit long and didn't really describe the concept other than from a mechanical point of view...which is interesting and somewhat curious given that your answer to Q3 indicates a preference for story and fluff. As a follow-up question, would you please clarify how you would play this character without using any mechanics in your explanation? What motivates him or her, what is his or her long-term goal or short-term goal, and what is he or she ultimately looking to accomplish? As for your answer to Q11, no, this campaign will not be low magic. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks, T.

Would love to join your game. I love Gray Hawk I remember some but not all. Looking to fill in the blanks. 1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? Well I work in retail so not off weekends so my game inch is quite large atm. Also I'm in my late 30's and live in chicago. 2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? Story and friends. I love to Role play a character with flaws. Also make stories I; dm a lot. Nothing better then playing a good game with friends and seeing where a story can take you. 3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? Well mechanics are not really important to much for me besides OP crap. I like a challenge in game. Be it with the mind or foe. I like fluff too it can make for some great stories. (remember that time when you turned your self into that rug to hide us from the guards priceless)  4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. Item hoarders(everything is mine), or rule quoting all the time.(sometimes its okay) 5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. Dming my last game of 2 years. People laughed, cried and made some good friends. But time and life caused the time to have to end. Having the group raise a dragon probably the coolest time. They got really into it. 6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? Probably bard because I play music. Its a fill and buffer to the party's skills and fighting. I like to be useful to others. 7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it.  Killing a character with only the player knowing. A friend didn't like the way the character was going so before game he ask me to kill him.  So I did and my players were very scared as death wasn't close to happening before. Also not allowing the res to work. The player wanted it kept secret so the others wouldn't get mad with him changing characters. Later he and I found the they wouldn't have minded and we laughed about it. 8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. Well a player wasn't getting involved in Rping in the story but was active before. So I did a story arc the focused on him. It was about finding his lost father and helping his mother come out of her depression. After I completed the arc he thanked me. I was like you welcome? His father pasted a way 2 years ago and the story gave him some good feeling about his dad. It was one of those cry moments. My Name is Arcon Brightsteel. I'm a son of a blacksmith and with the Brightsteel name I knew I would go far in the world. But that was until the visions game.. From that day forth my life was forfeit.  Now and forever more I will be known as a murderer. 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. Easygoing, Creative, joker.  11. Do you have any questions for me? How long will game sessions be?  What is your favorite edition?  Ham sandwich or BLT? And .... Are we there yet? thanks Salicar
Xian is a male Drow born in Drow society. He wasn't hated. He wasn't loved. He wasn't insulted or spat upon. He was just... ignored. As if he didn't even exist. A fate that most would fear more than being hated. He escaped this life at a young age. Left his home land and started his life as a drifter. He quickly learned he had to skulk around in the shadows and stay hidden, or he'd usually be beaten or run out of the towns he visited. Finally, found a place he could stay for a while. He learned how to read and write during this time with them. One of those that took him in died. Being a Drow, he was blamed by the town. He began his life as a drifter, once more. His books the only thing keeping him company. He started to pick up books on the workings of magic and thus started his career as a Wizard and his thirst for knowledge erupted. City after city he'd find ways to get more books. Whether it be to earn gold and buy them or just out right steal 'em. He would take breaks at times to develop his skills. Create spells. Or manipulate them in creative and intricate ways. Keeping in mind that he usually has to stay to the shadows, he would dabble in that area. Illusion and enchantment spells were helpful in that regard. But Xian is not devoted to one school of magic. He craves it all. He has tried, on multiple occasions, to make his evocation magic silent, but has yet to succeed. Xian keeps to his books and doesn't interact much with others, unless it's to quench his longing thirst. A few times he traveled with some companions, but it was for his own gain. On one of these expeditions he had run out of energy to cast powerful magic. He and his group were in a small bind, one of them had already perished, and he had to use his cunning to secure their survival. Luckily, his studies allotted him to know his opponents weren't all that intelligent. He used this knowledge to make them fall into their own traps. They returned to their employer. In lieu of gold, Xian had requested payment in information. This was not given to him. Feeling the sting of lies, Xian killed this man and resumed his travels. To this day, Xian is still wandering around, searching for knowledge. The thought of knowing everything of the cosmos... of the gods themselves, is what drives him forward. And even possibly, return home and MAKE them notice him.     May have went a bit overboard, but that's essentially that character. (He changes some from campaign to campaign) He's not what I had in mind for this campaign, considering he tends to be more on the evil side. Definitely chaotic, but that's most all of my characters. *Whispers* More freedom. Possibly your magic guy, L
Hi Lucifer, Thanks for answering my follow-up question. The players have declined your application. Thanks for the interest and best of luck with your future gaming. T.
Hi Salicar, Thanks very much for application and for your interest. For your answer to Q11, sessions run from 8:30 pm to 1 am Pacific time. That's 4 1/2 hours. My favorite edition is actually 1st edition. BLT. Let me know if you have any other questions. We're reviewing a few applications not posted in this thread and will revert to you soon as to next steps. Thanks, T.
1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? Where do I begin, I'm 28 I live in Australia so your time zone of the game ends up in my afternoon so yay for me. Played a few times on 5e but the other players or DM couldn't continue for personal reasons 2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? Living another life, during the time of playing the game I can be someone else and get lost in the story 3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? Mechanics are always needed to an extent, but nothing can beat a decent story which you can think back on and remember how you got to where you are. 4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. Not giving a heads up if you can't make it to an agreed session time. 5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. One of my first games myself and another player were trying to deceive a mayor while in disguise and the lie got so out of control with our rolls that we kind of pointed behind him and knocked him out when he turned around. We then waited a few in game hours and came and woke him up out of disguise and pretended that we saved him from an evil sorcerer. We also captured a goblin and trained it to be the next friendly goblin king. 6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? I have mainly played as a sorcerer, the group needed a mage and we needed someone to talk our way out of trouble when we got into it. 7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it. A player didn't agree with a decision the DM made, so we ended up spending 30 minutes listening to him complain only to have him purposely party wipe the team. I didn't like it as instead of rolling with the decision made he killed the party and ruined the night. 8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. Myself and another player wanted to go different directions and do different quests, we ended up rolling to see who we went with, but they were a rogue so the DM let them use sleight of hand and my character didn't see it. My name is Belven Bearcharger, I am a half elf who was lucky enough to live with both his parents and younger sister. When I hit the age of 16 a wild burst of magic came pulsating out of my hands and made me pass out, when I woke up my whole family was dead. I have now spent the past 15 years roaming the world learning to control my magic and trying to find out if I was the one that killed my family. 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. Carefree, inquisitive 11. Do you have any questions for me? Nah I'm all good
Barry -  Thanks for replying and for your interest. I was looking for more specificity instead of 1-2 sentence answers (i.e., Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q6, Q7, Q8). Based on the above, I'm going to decline the application. Thanks, T.
1. Would you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Anything you care to share at all? I'm Raven. (A twitch streamer) It's a pleasure! I'm 31 years old living in Oregon. Just looking to get into some great RP that lasts the long haul. My group fell apart due to people moving and I'm hoping to find another. My previous groups have all lasted over 5 years each. I love RP and try and do my best when presenting stories and creating characters that have stories that bring something to the table for the other group members just as much as it behooves me. 2. What do you look for in D&D games that interest you? I'm a big fan of in-depth RP. Many groups are more combat oriented and whilst it's great fun. The deep plotlines and stories are what I love to dig my teeth into. Creating stories and friendships in character that make for great memories and even more fun. I look for groups, not games. I want to find a group of players that can play games that will last years and others as well. 3. Are mechanics important to you, or do you prefer an emphasis on story and fluff? Why? That's a very hard question. I love emphasis on story but I think there is a fine balance of both fluff and story. Without the fluff you feel too linear. Too much fluff and you lose something in the story. Mechanics are important. I do love a great story...but we make the stories too. So i'm a bit undecided about what is more important. 4. Please tell me about your gaming pet peeves, if you have any. hmm. My pet peeves are people that don't care about the group. PvP. Selfishness in any game stinks. Another pet peeve is when a group messes around all the time and doesn't get anything done in an entire session. The basic stuff I think we all dislike lol.  5. Describe a campaign event or situation you have enjoyed in previous gaming. I once played in a Game of Thrones game where I was able to make a Dwarf Son of the Lannisters turned King. Renown for his goodness as The Benevolent Lion, a title given when his father was slain. It was an RP full of intrigue and about 60/40 with RP to Combat. It was a blast. He ended up surviving and stepping down as King himself.  6. Do you have a favorite character class, and if so, what is it? Why is it your favorite? I don't have a favorite character type. I enjoy playing different backgrounds and characters. It's like acting to me. I tend to get very method with my characters and come up with personalities and mannerisms of the people. Picture how they move and stand and try to present the best quality representation i can. 7. Please tell me a little bit about a campaign event or situation that you did not enjoy from a previous game and help me understand why you didn’t like it. There was one game where the DM would never pay attention during a game. It became impossible to get anything done. I can't imagine it getting much worse lol. Bad attitude also. I'm not picky. I also dislike when people, DM or Player don't work well in a group. 8. Please tell me about a conflict you have had in the past with a player or DM and how that was resolved. I once was awarded a few castles through my RP during a separate Game of Thrones game. Another player was dissatisfied because he couldn't pass his checks earlier in the day to get himself a home. I set aside a bunch of lands and gave him one of the castles. I'd much rather have the entire group happy as opposed to being simply rewarded myself. Granted they missed their check but we all needed places. Why wouldn't I help? lol 9. Valaerys Velaryon, A Diplomat and Knight. Known for his good nature. He's an incredibly prim and proper man and has a hard time relaxing. Great Diplomat and leader, He cares for the people as a whole more than he or his own. 10. Describe your personality in three words or less. Loving, Honest, Funny 11. Do you have any questions for me? Is there a possibility of this game being streamed? It's not mandatory for me to join but the detail you've required and put in so far is inspiring.
Hi Raven, Thanks for the interest and for your application. Regarding your answer to Q11, this game will very likely not be a candidate for streaming.  Since only one open position remains, there are a few apps we are currently considering - that have been posted elsewhere on Roll20. We hope to revert to you and Salicar soon if those don't work out. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks, T.
No worries if it doesn't get streamed. I'm still interested and could use another day off! lmao
Thanks for the update.
Hi folks, Thanks for all the replies. We have settled on a couple of candidates and will not be accepting further applications. I appreciate the interest though! Best, T.
