Help Giving player character template spells

I was curious if there is a way to set up player templates they can use for spells such as fireballs. Initially I had set up a new character that they simply had control over, and chose the token as the spell on the map layer, so they could place it over players while still being able to see people. It worked the first time but then stopped working.
Can you describe how it stopped working?
when the player now places the template down, it no longer puts the template picture on map level so it covers up everyone. the first time they use it it doesnt do that, but in order for them to reuse it, i have to retarget the picture on the map layer as the icon to use.

I'm not 100% sure I understand, but I think you're saying it goes on the object layer when they drag it out, and since it's the most recent token, it's on top of the object layer, thus obscuring the tokens beneath it? If so, I have 6 solutions, each worse than the last: As gm, right click template when it's dragged out, move to bottom. As gm, with advanced keyboard shortcuts turned on (maybe necessary), select token after it's placed properly, and hit l m (that's lowercase 'L' then 'm', not l+m though Use a different token, which is partially transparent. I have some shapes here: https://imgur.com/a/UZiIl Upgrade to pro and use an api script such as mine here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/5824771/aoe-template-generator/?pageforid=5824771#post-5824771 Using advanced keyboard shortcuts, hit m to switch to map layer, then drag the token out yourself, after having the players point to the spot they wish to target using the range arrow. Hit o to return to object layer when finished. Use an invisible token with an aura, change to square or circle as needed. Use range tool for lines

Can the player not right-click the token and select "Send to Back"?

Just tested to make sure, players can't.

Hmm, well the GM could, and then the player could move it as needed. There isn't really a need for a template to be on the map layer in most cases I would think. With a fireball , you drop it on, see which squares are at least 50% covered, and delete it. With something longer lasting like spirit guardians , letting the player drop the template on the VTT, having the GM use Send to Back, and then letting the player move it along with their token would work. Jonathan, would that handle your use case?

I have 3 journals set up with rollable table tokens as the default token, one a circular template, one a line, one a cone. The tokens are set to be controlled by all and drop their image onto the token layer so players can drop and go... some additional functionality that the API has given is the ability to setup a token action that allows the players to resize the token and change the side of the table displayed (for a variety of visually representative templates). Without the API simple geometric default tokens could be used and as long as player 'control' the journal and the template drops to the token layer then the only effort on the GM side would be resizing the token appropriately.
