Brand new to RL RPG

Hi guys, I've been interested in D&D for literally decades. I love RPG video games, I like fantasy and sci-fi books, history, tech, all sorts of things, but I've never played a pen and paper game and have no idea where to start. I don't know how Roll20 works, I don't know what to search for. I was hoping someone may be able to help me find a new player guide, or maybe even a game with a really patient GM to guide some new players through. Thanks!
Same here New to all of it.
Also new. Maybe the three of us should make a game together with a volunteer DM. (-: The blind leading the blind, eh?
Well there's this: https://wiki.roll20.net/Tutorial Other than that...depends on how much experience you have with storytelling. Mechanics are just crunchy rules you can read and figure out. And of course there are other considerations: how much crunch, ratio of pre-published vs. your own content, personality meshing or not, times available, herding cats, etc... I'm pretty booked solid with several games but depending on availability I could probably do a quick run through. (Pacific / GMT -7/-8) time zone here.
Hey. Just went through the whole tutorial. It explains the layout pretty well, though I still don't know the mechanics. This seems like one of those things where you just have to do it to learn it, and it may be painfully slow to start. I'm in eastern standard time. I gather usually these are done in live sessions. Luckily for me I guess, I kind of operate on west coast time. I do work full time and have some social commitments but if anyone wants to start slow and go slow, I'd be down.
It is easy for many folks to learn the mechanics through actual play than by reading a rulebook. What I would suggest is you browse either this forum or the group finder tool and look for games and settings that seem interesting to you. Send the GM a message and ask if they're okay with a new-to-the-game player. Almost all are and if they know ahead of time, most are usually willing to help you figure things out as long as you seem interested in learning and not a complete flake. :D Roll20 is home to many, many different games and settings. Everything from traditional fantasy to modern urban horror to super hero worlds to science fiction. Check it all out and see what appeals to you the most and what you think you could fit in as a player the easiest.
If you're interested, you could take a look at this: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7228141/new-to-dnd-and-roll20-looking-for-people-to-teach-slash-learn-with-me/?pageforid=7228141#post-7228141 This post was basically the same thing about making a game for all new players to just take it slow and learn, and the group for it still isn't fully decided
Hey Andrew, I commented on that post. Thanks.
The large questions are when you would be willing to play? What system are you in the interest to learn? What role do you plan on playing? Tank, DPS, Healer? How long would you want to play? 2hr game is quite shorter but not as in depth per session, while 6 hours is really indepth but not always feasible. I, could run for example but I have the requirement of "no weekends." What sounds feasible?
EvilMeanBadGuy said: The large questions are when you would be willing to play? A: I work Mon-Fri ~9am to ~6pm EST, Monday evenings are always booked. Most weekday nights will work well past 7PM. What system are you in the interest to learn? A: I don't really know the options. Classic D&D sounds really fun, but I'm open to almost anything. What role do you plan on playing? Tank, DPS, Healer? A: I am versatile and one of the things I was hoping to get from this is to be forced to play outside my comfort zone due to the human element. Normally in video games I'd end up being an incredably balanced character, because the mechanics always allow for it. How long would you want to play? 2hr game is quite shorter but not as in depth per session, while 6 hours is really indepth but not always feasible. A: I'd prefer on the shorterside because life is unpredicatable. 3 hours sounds like the sweet spot though. I, could run for example but I have the requirement of "no weekends." A: I could work with no weekends. What sounds feasible? A: Tonight would have actually been fantastic, but usually I can swing any Tue-Friday evening. If I can't, generally I know a couple of weeks in advance.

Thanks Helen. I'm slowly going through these. It's going to take me a bit of time reading through the 180 page PDF XD
