hi, i NEVER want to automatically transmit video or audio when joining any game. ever. i can't find the appropriate settings for that on my account or in the help docs. is there a way to do this or am i out of luck?
Unfortunately it's a per game setting as far as I know. The game creator can turn off the setting in the settings cog tab inside the game. They just go down to the WebRTC dropdown and choose none or whatever it is, then it won't ask anyone again for that game. You should also be able to disable the option in your browser. In Firefox you enter about:preferences#privacy in to your address bar and it's down a bit on the page. I don't know about Chrome, but it's probably similar.
At this time there is no global setting to do what you want. Each game has a setting that the GM can set to text, video, or video & audio. That is a global setting for that specific game. Each player can set up what to transmit and receive in each game. All this can be found inside the game on the setting tab (players have less settings to tinker with). Spren knows more about how to tweak the browser than I do so give his suggestion a try if you want to.

It is not truly well known but we cover it when there are talk about new GMs starting up games in my text only community.
Actually, if the issue is just one of transmission, you can forbid the roll20.net site access to your camera and microphone. This is a browser level setting, and can be configured to only deny Roll20, in case you want to use the camera and mic on other sites. The exact steps will vary by browser.
