Not seeing all the content

I must be missing something fundamental about this website. When I got to make a Wood Elf, I select Race: Elf and the only subrace is "High Elf"... that's it.  Nothing else to pick from. Same for Backgrounds.  The only background I see is Acolyte .  That's it.  Nothing else to pick from. Sooooooo I'm new here.   What am I missing?  Do you you have to load in the books or something? So confused by this site.

Legally, the free compendium can only contain the content that WotC has declared to be part of the system reference document (SRD) . Essentially this is a small fraction of the PHB and Monster Manual. Digital versions of the PHB, Monster Manual, and many other 5e books are available for purchase on the Roll20 marketplace.

To expand on what Scott said, if you have the books in a different format than on Roll20, you can always just build the character manually without using the charactermancer.  It just means more typing or copy/pasting.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the SRD content also known as the Basic Rules Book? If so, why aren't some of the Basic Rules content available on Roll20 yet available on DnD Beyond?

You'll need to be more specific than that, but as far as I know the only name for the srd is SRD, or OGL content as outlined in the srd linked above.

So confused by this site. This is due to the System Resource Document and Open Gaming License. Only part of the D&D system is available for free. All other content is paid content.  We hope this information helps. Basic Rules is the name of the Book that Wizards of the Coast is willing to mail to anyone who asks, for free, hence the confusion. The Basic Rules is available for Free on DnD Beyond Here , you don't even need to be logged in if I recall correctly. Thank you Dragon Dreamer for clearing that up.
