There are a couple different things that can be done. I have an invisible (totally transparent) token that I made that I use for auras for large round areas of effect. Since you can choose whether the aura is visible to players or not, it is workable for the DM to know the range of an AoE protection from invisibility ward, for example. I use auras on player tokens for them to see (and to remind me of) the range of abilities like presence sense. This sort of thing can be used for any round or square (if there are any in Palladium) AoE. Custom shapes for various things. The marketplace has some fancy ones like https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/914/faster-casters-spell-fx and https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/1968/areas-of-effect , and even simple ones like https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/gameaddon/460/area-of-effect-template-pack . You might look at those to give you ideas of what you need compared to what abilities get used in your game. Obviously you can buy those, find some on the internet, or make your own. If you have certain configurations of AoE that your players use a lot, you can set those shapes up on sheets that are controlled by everyone. Then your players can drag the shape out on the map when they need it without you having to place it for them. The last thing I will say is that if there is a small rectangular or square patch of something (carpet of adhesion or sheet of ice), I tend to use the draw tool to just put a simple outline on the map and leave it there until the effect is done.
