No amount of browser-side scaling gets around this bug. The only way currently to use the zoom tool is to select it and then use arrow up/arrow down to select your zoom level.
I have only ever used the Slider and zooming all the way out gets you that weird border on the maps, which is also a long standing bug. The best way to get around that is to pad the space around your map, but that may not be feasible with large maps.
