well, as i understood it, the number of proficiencies is equal to the number of languages. And because i am a wizard i have lots of intelligence, so i get lots of proficiencies. (8 lang + 4 base = 12) its like in 3.5th edition skill points, you get them for int, so wizards have a lot (though they have less base to compensate for that). if our DM wants, i can take some more languages and less proficiencies also, as you might have noticed, my equipment isnt quite done yet^^
