Allow players to gmroll

I know this has come up before, specifically [here] , but I would like to revive the suggestion that a player should be able to make a /gmroll so that the results would only be known by the GM. This allows the player to initiate the action which lends to more player interaction and less demand on the GM while increasing the level of suspense for players. "I wonder if I was spotted by tower guards?" or "Did the Queen believe my lie about the army of undead marching toward the castle?" Can anyone give examples of how this could be useful in roll20? Any downside?

Hmm, why not just do it with "/w gm [[1d20]]" or whatever die needs rolling?
When you do a gm roll now it shows for both the player and the gm. What Vince is asking for is for the player to initiate the roll by pressing a macro or inputting a command but only show the roll result to the gm and to the player who initiated the roll. So currently if a player wanted to say make an insight roll vs an npc he either gets to see the result or has to ask the gm to make the roll for him.
I have macros for thieves which send canned "whispers" to me to request a roll and pass the % for success, then I click a macro to roll it and either report back to the player or not. I too tried to figure out how to have them roll without seeing the roll, this was the best I could do.

Ah I see...Why not just have the GM do the roll then? I mean, the player would never know his result anyway and the GM could also be completely ignoring said result even if the player did actually roll, so I fail to see why it matters.
I provide players with a macro: /w gm Wm. picks a pocket 50% ?{who|_} then I have "GM' buttons on the bottom of my screen to click, then I am obtuse with the players about the results.

Good suggestions. Call me lazy, but why not have a macro handle all the heavy-lifting? A macro could be setup on the players side that requires nothing more from the GM than to look at the results and narrate accordingly. No need for the GM to track down the info on a per-character basis and no need to make a roll the player could have already made. Fantasy Grounds allows for players to roll in a "dice tower" that only the GM can see. It's a nice feature. /gmroll could also be used inside players macros to hide target information from the players, for example; /em attacks @{target|Name} with her short sword and rolls [[1d20+@{Melee}]] /gmroll vs AC @{target|AC}. Damage = [[1d6+@{STR}]] This would allow my player to attack a target, learn the targets name and show the attack roll, but the targets AC and the amount of damage done on a successful hit would only be seen by the GM. All done by the player. This could be done for countless other checks as well where the character would not necessarily know the extent of success or failure.
Well, the GM roll would still be seen by the player who rolled it. I use: /em @{selected|token_name} attacks @{target|token_name} hits AC: [[@{selected|bar3} - (1d20 + ?{Strength To Hit Adl|0} + ?{Magic Adj|0})]] /em @{target|token_name}'s AC: @{target|bar2} /w gm [[1D100]] I use the Gmroll to determine crits and fumbles. In Ad&D 2E, AC goes from naked 10 to for sitting in a bunker -10 and I could not incorporate negative armor classes into formulas. If negative numbers did not freeze the roller, I could do it in a much more compact way.

Well, the GM roll would still be seen by the player who rolled it. I just realized that, thank you... I assumed, erroneously, that /gmroll could only be done by the GM. LOL Since /w gm does the same thing, I guess I would like for a /gmroll to ONLY be seen by the GM when initiated by players. Or maybe something new like a "blind whisper", /bw gm
