Sorting Maps

Hi all,

I'm wondering if there is any easier way to sort maps. I'm going into my third campaign on roll20 and generally what I had been doing is designing the maps as they came up. IE I know during there next session they'll encounter 1 to 3 maps and so I prep those and just worry about future encounters until later.

The game I'm working on is a bit broader with more player options on the order they handle things, so I need a lot more prepared. So I'm going to have a bunch of maps needed at the start of the game. Sorting them I've found to be a bit troublesome. To the best of my knowledge (and maybe I missed something), the standard option is for the page toolbar to drop down and then be scrolled along, with all created maps in there.

I'm wondering if there is any option I'm missing for easier sorting of maps. Is there a way to put them into folders (that would be ideal for me) or some other method?

I searched the forums for this, but all of the topics I was seeing where from 5+ years ago (and negative on more options), so I thought I'd check to see if there are any newer options available.

Thank you for your help.

There are a couple things you can do at the free level that may help.

If you get a fair number of maps in the page bar, drag the maps you expect to use to where they are visible without scrolling.  Basically, bring the maps close to the player ribbon instead of scrolling along while dragging the ribbon.  I have also seen mention of someone using a "traveling map" where they will place the player ribbon and then drag that page around to the next map the players need to view.  Basically, that is sort of an "elevator music" map.

If you are using an image for maps, make it a single image.  If you are using assets from Roll20 to make your maps, download them, assemble them in GIMP, Photoshop, Inkscape, or whatever you are familiar with or have access to.  Then when you upload them and get them sized on a map page, create a character sheet for that image and save it as the default token.  Now that you have it assigned to a sheet, you can save it as a character in your character vault.  You can then delete the map page if you won't be using it for a while.  When you need it back, just import the "character" from your vault and drop the token on the map.  As a token, it should retain the original dimensions.  You may want to mention map page size settings (or anything else special for the map) on the sheet Bio & Info tab.  You could even create a game that is just a collection of "map characters" if you don't want your character vault cluttered up all the time.  Then you will know where to find them.

Both of those should be Stupid Tricks, Kraynic.

Hi Christopher, another thing to consider is altering the display of the page menu to make it more manageable. Check out:

Hi, thank you for the replies, I will give them a try. For clarity, is there something more I could do at the paid level?

As a pro subscriber, you can move maps (with all dynamic lighting, tokens, etc. intact) from one game to another using the transmogrifier tool.  So I usually don't keep many more maps in an active game than I can see, since (if I keep good organization with storage game names and map names) I can can just move the map back in with very little time spent to do so.

This also goes for characters, handouts, and rollable tables.
