I can't get decks to work. I try to draw a card, but clicking on the deck does nothing. Cards don't peek out when I mouse over. I can't move the deck at all. I tried using the Deal option to deal myself some cards, but I don't see a hand icon above my avatar, and when I press "recall" it says all the cards are still in the deck. The "Shuffle" button is also always visible on the deck. What am I missing?
Thanks Aaron. Alright I'll see what games I can find then and if I cant I could just host my own. If any one has some spots open for new players let me know if you can.

Liam: is that a deck you created, or the standard deck? You might need to shuffle the deck the first time you put it into play before you can draw.

Aah it was the standard deck. Thank you. It's a little disappointing that there's no way to recall specific cards to the top or bottom of the deck, or to peek at and rearrange the top or bottom of the deck, or to search for a particular card in the deck. It's also really annoying adding custom decks one card at a time, and not being able to upload images in bulk, or easily select from images you've already uploaded. The fact that it doesn't automatically set the card's name to the filename also sucks. Oh well.

Yeah. I know that deck changes are much desired by the community. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some big changes in that area in the next update. also, there are some things you can do with the API that can help.
The deck option is one I am really looking forward to making use of, like the drama deck from TORG (the first thing I thought about when I saw at it is the deck thing there) hearing the one card at a tome frightens me with the 250+ cards in the drama deck <shudder>. Also a card based Solo Adventure Generator Is an Idea I have been Kicking around as a "...we wanna play but no one wants to be the GM". I am also waiting for payday so I can jump in on the Kickstarter that I saw in the Wolflair Gen-Con newsletter as I plan to specialize in Rolemaster for my group. We currently have a rotating Skull & Shackles, Reign of Winter, Rise of the Runelords, Iron Gods, Shadow World, thing started (Reign of Winter currently) so no one gets burned out being the GM all the time (We go through one book in the AP then move on to the Next GM). I am hoping to get Familiar enough with Roll20, and Realmworks so that the others will just jump on the Bandwagon.
Hi. Name is Josh and im new to Roll20. Any advice on where to go to get a taste of things before committing to a campaign? Experienced in mostly advanced D&D but willing to try pretty much anything.

Ah. Roll20 is completely rules agnostic. With very few exceptions, you can play whatever game you wish to play on here. If you're looking for a gaming group designed with newbies in mind, I'd recommend using our Looking For Group forum or Looking For Group tool that you can find uptop in the blue bar.

I am totally out of my element, here. I'm running a game of the Star Wars d20 game with five players, two of which will be on Skype. I know how to handle the die rolls and all but I'm having trouble putting together maps for my first session. I need maps for a cantina, a Dark Side tainted forest and an ancient temple that appears pristine on the outside but is desecrated internally. I can't seem to get any premade maps that look right after being stretched a little bit and I don't begin to know how to put together one of my own. Any help would he appreciated.
Well, maybe there is no such map available / made yet on roll20. What I would recommend is trying to either look out of Roll20 for material. It's been a while since I last checked but aren't there some maps in the D20 Star Wars rule book? Other solution would be learn to create your own maps I suppose :P
Some but I'm too lazy to find a way to transfer them to my comp. I also wouldn't mind learning how to make my own, though again, I'm not terribly artistically inclined.
Hey, i am new to this, looking for D&D 3.5 game, i put out some feelers for groups. But i want to know what i can do while waiting for a group to accept me.

I'd suggest watching some of the roll20 videos, reviewing the macros and dice mechanics, and playing with the features some.
Ryan A. said: Some but I'm too lazy to find a way to transfer them to my comp. I also wouldn't mind learning how to make my own, though again, I'm not terribly artistically inclined. Then maybe you could download the PDF and copy from them. You'll need to make some efforts no matter what you do, if you want maps you can't really afford to be lazy :P For the learning part, I'd say the best way to do it is either practice, or look at what others do. You could join a campaign, or you could watch live streams... or make a forum thread asking for people to show you their maps. Which would be sort of an awesome thread really. ************** Matthew U. said: Hey, i am new to this, looking for D&D 3.5 game, i put out some feelers for groups. Hey I'm curious about preconstructed campaign assets. Is it possible to transfer all the material you've already put into a campaign over to a whole different account so that they could run their adventure?

One can not share a campaign like that, no. The closest you can get is to create a copy of your campaign and then bump the other account up to Co-GM the campaign. You will always retain the ownership of the campaign. This is to prevent distribution of copyrighted content.

With the vanilla 3.5 character sheet, can I link ability modifiers? I am not seeing it. As far as strength goes, I'm only seeing @{str-base} @{str-misc} @{str-temp}, none of which really do me any good.

You might want to ask that question on the Character Sheet forum so that sheet's designer has a better chance of seeing the question. The character sheets are designed by community members and not by Roll20's developers directly.

Harley, you can use @{str-mod} for the modifier. Note that it must be inclosed in an inline roll or used as part of a dice expression as it is a formula: [[@{str-mod}]] /r 1d20+@{str-mod}

Hello, folks. I just signed on and this looks amazing. My question is, do the map functions support Vampire and Werewolf a la White Wolf or are all the graphics geared towards fantasy exclusively? If I could find a library of art for these games (or generic horror art or whatever) I'm in business. ^_^
My Fiance just bought a samsung galaxy tab S and we thought we would be able to use the voice and video chat with it. Does the mobile version not support Voice and Video, or is something not working right?

@Christopher T. - You can use any maps you like. There are some modern maps in the marketplace, or you can import them from another source. Any JPG, PNG or GIF works fine (GIFs won't be animated). Fantasy RPGs are very popular, so you'll see a bunch of pictures from them and resources in the marketplace, but Roll20 is system agnostic and will allow you to play anything. @Jimmy W. - I don't know the answer to your question, hopefully Kristin will be by soon. Sorry!
How do you expand the grid?

@Issac - the grid is changed in the settings for the page. You can change the size of the squares, the number of squares in the map (width & height), the units for measurments (and how to count diagonals), as well as the shape (squares, horizontal hexes, vertical hexes). Note that if you have a page set up the way you want it, you can use the copy page button to create a new page with the same settings (but none of the contents).

@Issac - not sure what you're asking here. Is there a Roll20 tie-in to that, like special mechanics or macros you're asking about? @Paul - there is not, short of taking screenshots and stitching them together in something like the Gimp. This is a requested feature in the suggestions forum right now, as it happens, and there is quite a bit of discussion about it there.
thank you Aaron for the info! hope this update comes to pass! Got some sweet dungeons i want to print out. i will keep half to using crappy pyromancers till then.
Hello, new user here with a question about line of sight. In MapTools line of sight works such that, if a token 'bumps' into the light obstruction, it cannot cross over it - the token will literally bounce off of the obstruction. playing around with LoS in roll20, it seems that the token can move, unimpeded, over the light obstruction. for example, if I have a simple house, and draw a LoS polygon around the house, and a token positioned outside the house, then that token can move through the wall/obstruction and right into the house. is there a way to make it such that it bounces off the obstruction (a la MapTools)? ty!

There might be a way to code that functionality with the API, but at default there's no way to prevent a token from being moved anywhere on the page.
-nods- thanks for quick response!
I am an EXTREME NOOB. I was wondering if there was a random pick up mode or something like that on here. Sometime when I want to play I can only play right then. I dont always know what i will be doing the next day. I am interested in playing right now. It seems thought that the game have to be signed up for atleast a day in advance.
i'm in the same group Arvel! Not sure there is a feature for that that i could have found. Most of the games are planned ahead of time. Though i think if there is enough interest for that we could possibly get something going on the forums?

hello again. another recovering-from-maptools question: in maptools, when a player token wanders around the map, it autoreveals the fog of war around him according to the light barriers and light characteristics of the token. for example, if the PC is entering a fully fogged of war room with a candle that provides 360 degree five feet visibility, then the fog or war will be revealed around him according to his movements on concentric 5 feet arcs. video demo , feature can be seen around the 2:17 mark. do I understand it correctly that in roll20 the GM must manually reveal the fog of war around the player? thank you!

@Lyle - you understand correctly. Dynamic lighting kind of fills the void you're describing, but it lacks the trail of revealed space.

I'm just a player like you, I just subscribe to the Mentor level package of support and extra yummies, so I can't speak to development priorities. I can tell you that Fog of War ala Warcraft 2 is a much requested feature. From a programming standpoint, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be done, it would require a bit of extra work though.

Arvel and Jake, I'd recommend looking into one-shot games or play-by-post games. One-Shots are games like Fiasco, The Quiet-Year, and a variety of titles from Bully Pulpit Games. These are meant to be played in a single session and might have LFG notices the day of the game. A lot of these one-shot games also don't really have a need for a dedicated GM, so you could set up the campaign yourself and grab players when you're ready to play. Play-By-Post games might also be easier to swing when you can't guess your schedule. These are full campaign long games where the gameplay doesn't happen live, but everyone takes turns logging into the campaign and posting what their character does. Since the game isn't live, you can swing into the campaign and RP at any point you're free to log in.
Hi! The game system my group uses, is designed on custom dice. Is there any way how I could duplicate this non-numerical dice in my roll20 campaign?
This is maybe dumb, but I've read through all of the posts in this thread and still have my question. I'm new to roll20, and I noticed that the tutorial videos (fantastic, btw) are all geared for GMs creating and running games. Is there anything that I as a potential player need to know about how this site works? I'm terrified that I'm going to get invited into a game and the GM will say "okay, so before we start you need to [x,y, and z]" and I'll be like "I have no clue how to do any of that." To clarify, I don't mean as in "I don't know how the game system works," I mean it in a "how do I do that on this website" sense.

Dorian, you'll want to use Rollable Tables to create dice that use abstract face designs (like Star Wars: Edge of the Empire). Joe, next up on my list of videos to produce is a newbie guide from a player perspective. As a player, you'll probably be asked by the GM to submit a character sheet often outside the campaign itself using either a google doc, myth-weavers, Hero Lab or Obsidian Portal for review. A GM should direct you what they want so you're not completely in the dark as to what to do. Some might have you transfer it to a character journal within the campaign itself. The video that pertains to rolling dice and making macros is relevant to both players and GMs alike.
Awesome, thanks! I figured that the answer would be something simple like that, but paranoia's a beast :-P And looking forward to that video, whenever it comes out!
Hi there im not a very experienced gm and ill will be starting a campaign in a week or two with my friends which i will be hosting. I have the idea in mind just need to get familiar with this site and how i would do a roll 20 online, if there are any link to tutorial videos i would greatly appriciate it.

Hello, I have a question about character avatars. I'm building out a bunch of NPCs/monsters for a campaign I am working on. For each character, I have two images I can associate: an 'Avatar', and a 'Token'. Once I've associated the character to a token, that token is visible on the map to the players. Is there a way to make the Avatar image viewable in-game (not in-journal) to the players as well? In maptools, for example, you just select the token and the avatar is viewable in the bottom right hand side of the screen. I ask because often times my avatars are more awesome looking than the tokens, and I want my players to fully appreciate the scariness of the monsters based on the avatar itself. thank you!

Gid
Roll20 Team
Lyle, that type of feature isn't available. It's probably possible to finagle a way to make it viewable with an API script, but that does require a Mentor subscription to gain access to the API and coding know-how to achieve the effect.
Thanks Kristin! Is there a cheap and dirty way to make this work (ie drag and drop the avatar image onto the map, or something like allows me to expose the Avatar image to the player in-game)? I'd hate to have to duplicate the same image file twice - it is going to end up being hundreds of duplicate images, very inefficient :-(
