André G. said: Hi, I would like to test the API script and I'm wondering why it is for Mentor subscription only? I'm pretty sure that if it was free, there would be a lot of programmer interrested to make good scripts and who would share them for free. That would be beneficial for everyone... Please offer it to everyone! Thank you This was discussed at the GenCon Panel. The reason it isn't free is because it is actually quite expensive for Roll20 to provide. It requires additional servers to run the API and creates additional load on the database servers and game servers. Most of a mentor's subscription payment goes to covering that cost. I'm sure Roll20 would love to provide it as a free service, but frankly, I'm impressed they can offer as much as they do for free; it borders on altruism. :)

Russ S, I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad first experience. I'm not sure how you found your game but if it was through LFG then I'd suggest finding a new game and group that is more accommodating. One that uses the in game voice chat (since you said that worked well for you). Let me know if you're having trouble finding a game and I will help you look.
Hey I was wondering why Cyberpunk 2020 is not in the list of tag-able games in the LFG search and campaign creation system.

The general policy as it's been bandied about is that a game doesn't show up in its own tag until there are enough games of it in LFG such that you can always find one listed. A bit catch 22, but there it is.
Alright thanks for the explination!
Hey Guys...Just getting back into D&D...Used Roll 20 last year and was very impressed. As it goes the group got busy with life and we had to stop playing. By the way, the improvements look awesome. Is there game sharing available? Just curious that after spending tons of time creating a game with maps and a storyline if we would be able to post it with a specific level so that others may use as well. Thanks Bobby

There are! They are called Modules. If you're interested in developing one, email <a href="mailto:team@roll20.net" rel="nofollow">team@roll20.net</a>. My understanding is that you basically create a campaign, and it is taken "as is" and compacted into a module. People can then get them from the Market Place and they just show up as an option in a drop down when they create a new campaign. Restrictions are something like: All Tokens, Maps, and Content needs to be owned by the author, or given to them via a license that allows them to package and redistribute them (regardless if the module is fee or not). Contact the team if that seems like something you'd like to do!
new to DnD and looking to get started. only problem I could see is I have a random work schedule each week, and groups like to have set meeting times, correct?

Depends on the group. Most like a firm schedule, but there are groups that are very loose regarding schedule. I haven't used LFG, but you could certainly post there looking for a game of DnD with a flexible weekly schedule.
Aaron, Thanks for the info. That is what I was curious about.

Philip, messages are organized into threads, with only the top level message having an entry under Recent Campaign Discussion. If you click on one of the titles of the two messages you're seeing, does it open up and show you all the replies as well?

Hi Kostas. That's kind of off topic. If it were it's own thread, it would probably get closed like this one asking almost the same question: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1395209/suggestion-for-1st-tabletop-game#post-1398671" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1395209/suggestion-for-1st-tabletop-game#post-1398671</a>

Ahoy hoy. I'm new to this website, but not new to the D&D setting. Been keen to get into it for a while, but having searched for a group the past few days, I've been hesitant to try and apply to Pathfinder/D&D 5E since most replies are either months apart, or hours apart and it leads me to believe the campaign isn't really open despite it advertising so. I'd also like to DM Pathfinder/D&D 5E, but I want to try out both as a player on this website. It seems incredibly fun, and if it all goes well I am really looking into becoming a supporter. Any hints/tips is greatly appreciated, also for anything DM related I can always use a hand. ;D

it is ok but you are having difficulties and it could be just a technical issue. An individual post will gather more eyes from the proper people in the proper forum and it doesn't clutter up this thread with a different subject then the original post was about.
I have played several games and I think I am ready to GM one. I spent a lot of time and prep work getting everything set up, input all pertinent info to create a LFG listing, and now I can't seem to find in in the listings. I have checked all pages one by one and used the search function with no luck. I want others to be able to find it because the campaign shows that it has an active listing. If anyone has suggestions or would be willing to "HALP MEH!" a PM would be great! The campaign is called "The Great Cliche". Thanks in advance! Jared

I looked under GURPS and your game shows. Strange that when I searched GURPS for the title "The Great Cliche" nothing shows, but if I searched for " CONGRATULATIONS ", the first word in your description it shows in the results... I would reccomend adding the title to the Description. Can't hurt.

Jared A, it takes about 2 hours or so for the servers to sync up and spread newly listed campaigns. You campaign shows on a general list search with keyword "The Great Cliche".
Hey all, New to roll20 and considering starting up d&d 5e. I have set up a test campaign with the 5e character sheet. I am confused as to how the sheet is suposed to work. I have many questions but will keep it to one. Should the character sheet auto fill or provide a selection list for individual areas? such as: spells. When i select the spell drop down should I get a list of, say, 1st level spell? or do we/I need to type them in. If I type them in, do they need to be an exact spelling/format in order to work with the sheet correctly? Thanks, Bobby

Bobby: The sheet is there to organize whatever content you want to add to it. Since the spell information is owned by Wizards of the Coast, the sheet author would not be able add them into it legally. Typing them in isn't too onerous a task though, and allows you to make up spells later. You can add as much or as little detail as you like to them, or even not use them at all (I have one character that has all their spells as powercard macros instead.)
Umm... new to D&D on most aspects all i have ever learned was to make a character and the local group who was going to teach me how to play disbanded right as soon as i was able to start. Is there anyone on here whod be willing to take me under their wing?

Alexa, your best bet is the read the LFG forums then post what you are wanting and search the LFG search (see blue banner above) with the welcomes new players filter activated. This thread is more for asking where to post and how to do something. See the first post of the thread.

Hello Benjamin and welcome to roll20. You might want to make your own thread about what type of help you need for building maps. To start you off with some info here are some wiki links. <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Tabletop_Overview" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Tabletop_Overview</a> (tells you how to upload images and such) <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Manipulating_Graphics" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Manipulating_Graphics</a> (moving tokens) <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Image_Best_Practices_for_R" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Image_Best_Practices_for_R</a>... (recommended how to work with images and what type works best for a particular use) In the new thread, I would recommend you answer and post the answers to theses questions. Is it going to be made with tiles in the roll20 campaign game board or be built offline with a 3rd party software? Is it going to be a world/regional image or a small combat/encounter type? There are more but those can be asked in the new thread. Good luck.

Hi all! I'm a new GM as of 2 months and about 5 sessions, first of all just wanted to say how impressed i am with the roll20 suite- means i can game with some long lost players again! I have a question about the tags- is there a way to organise the drop down list in the journal pane? They are currently arranged in the order that i created them in, is it possible to sort alphabetically etc? Cheers, Jas

There isn't a way to adjust their order, but I was thinking they were listed in order by the number of times they are used (least to most), and then alphabetically.
Just wanted to say excellent job on the original post! The videos and links are very helpful, thanks!
Hello! I have been playing AD&D since 1981 but I only joined Roll20 this past week at the mentor level to gain access to all the cool toys. I have a really stupid question though. When I go into the tabletop to work on my maps, I have noticed that there is no obvious way to exit this environment and drop back into the Roll20 website. It seems to be fine with me closing the tab, but I have concerns about everything saving state, not to mention the server overhead of a virtual environment just sitting and waiting for some input, until everything times out. Is it expected that one just close the browser tab? I am guessing that each instance of the tabletop is run virtually, but I am concerned about possible complications resulting from not sending the servers a clear message that one is exiting the tabletop. Is this a valid concern, or am I just being paranoid? I absolutely love everything that I have discovered so far, and can hardly wait to start my game (Jan 3) I just hope I can figure enough out by then to not dissapoint my players.

Hello Scott. When you are in your game and wish to leave, you just go to the setting tab (looks like a gear on the last tab above the chat area) and scroll to the bottom. There you will have two choices to make, rejoin as a player or exit the game. Now as the just close the tab way of exiting, the server autosaves every so many seconds (usually when it detects a change in the map or when you save a handout/journal). This is a concern that gets asked alot. If you haven't had a chance yet, watch the videos in the original posts. It covers a lot of the how to use roll20. If you have any problem with using roll20 or question feel free to post a question in the specific use forum or in the bug forums if it is a technical issue.
Uh hi? I'm generally new to roleplaying and this site and to be honest I don't really know how to find games. Every game I find that has open slots is full of people who most likely have more skill asking to join and I can't really see a way to join any games. Thanks for responding possibly. If not it's okay.

Hello Sir Siggles and welcome to roll20. Have you watched the videos in the original (First) post? They are incredible and explain many aspects of roll20 and gaming in general. There are a few ways to find a game. The first one is to go to the blue banner above and click on the Looking for Group button. This will take you to our search engine and game listing. The main filter you want to set is the welcomes new players then the other filters as you see fit. When you use that, it will show the games that are specifically open to new players. The second / third way is to use the looking for group forum. You can read through the forum to find a game that interest you and make your pitch either in public or pm the gm to pitch your willingness to learn his game. Persistence is the key to it all. You might get lucky and find a game withing an hour or you will have to do those repeatedly over the course of weeks. Don't worry about your skill level unless the GM is specifically stating he is taking only experienced players. There could be the most experienced player asking to join the group but if his personality doesn't mesh with the GM then he won't get in. This is a social hobby so the more social you are, the better your chances will be but never let anything stop you from asking to join. The worst thing they can say is no.
I am looking for a DM for Pathfinder, if you know the game and don't mind some homebrew skill, send a message. Must have a Deviantart account. Also, looking for someone that knows Dark Heresy to help explain its ins and outs.

Hi everybody, Sorry for writing the same post as dozens above but I got a bit lost... I'm totally new to roll20 and quite new to RPG games because my only experience were only few D&D games played a few years ago on a holiday camp. Where should I start and what should I do now to learn how to use roll20 and how to play RPG games? I'm mainly interested in D&D but also more flexible systems like GURPS or FATE which I know from "in theory" - I read manuals but I didn't have anyone to play with. So... What should I do know? Search for manuals? Search for group? Read/watch tutorials? Sorry for asking the same question as lots of people before but I got lost in all these possibilities...
Veteran 3/3.5 player and GM looking to join a weekly or bi weekly campaign to get used to rolld20.
Matthew J. said: Veteran 3/3.5 player and GM looking to join a weekly or bi weekly campaign to get used to rolld20. Same with me Matt, I'm very old school and my D'n'D gaming experience began in 1979. I was skeptical about how this all could possibly work, but willing to have a good go at it. This Roll20 thing seems cool as far as I can tell, but still I wont be looking to run any games but just participate as a player. If you are thinking to have a go at running anything 3/3.5, I'm in.

SokoI07, Matthew, and Brian. You might want to make a post in the Looking for Group forum instead of in this thread. If you read the first post you will notice it is for new people that are in need of a how to start or do something basic in roll20, not a looking for a game thread. Now if you need help that the first post does not cover, you can post a question in the specific questions forum. Have a nice day.
