Simple Way To Record Sessions?

1403011798

Edited 1403011825
I kind of want to record the audio of my sessions for posterity and put them up on soundcloud where my players can listen to the game after it's finished. However, I'm not sure what all I need to do to make that happen. Does anyone here have tips?

Just audio? I know of video recorders but the only thing I could think of is audacity but I'm not sure if that will record your game audio.
I can do both individually on Audacity, whether it's recording my own microphone or whatever is playing through my speakers, but I am unsure how to record /both./

I don't use it so I can't help you. Have you tried finding the forum for it and posting a request for help on how to use it there? Good luck.
If you don't, maybe someone else will, because the internet is flush with various ways to fix this problem that do not work with me.

Audacity can do your recording. Pat S is right that your best bet to understanding how to do it with Audacity is consult some of the audacity manuals / forums. Though someone may come along on here to explain how they do it with recording game sessions. It's do-able to get your audacity recording your incoming and outgoing voices. It may have as much to do with changing your Windows / computer audio settings, as it does the Audacity settings, but audacity user websites can explain that the best. Soundcloud free-account will not be able to host your recordings, unless you pay for Soundcloud upgrades (ongoing monthly fee as long as you want your full length audio to be available on there). The default soundcloud free account is limited in the number of minutes audio you can have, and the limitation is not long enough for posting lengthy game session recordings. You get maybe an hour or 2 for free, after that it's pay. YouTube will host unlimited length recordings for no charge. You would just need to convert it to a "video file" which could be just a still-picture for the video image, and your audio track. You can do this in a free video editor program. You can make it into an mp4, MOV, or AVI file. There are other websites dedicated to hosting Podcast audio which would also host your files for free, or for pay.
If you are using Skype, then I found the MP3 Skype Recorder works very well for me. As for uploading, I simply use Mediafire and link the URL to my players. They can then download the file or use Mediafire's built-in audio player (though the player doesn't work very well for long recordings with poor internet).
If you want to also include the game table from the GM's perspective you could use open broadcaster to capture the game, steam it to twitch.tv and save it in your archive. With a bit of magic, you could make the screen only show the players cameras (if you use them) and the chat box, but not the actual map.
