Map Pins are here in Early Access beta for Pro and Elite subscribers!!

Hi Novercalis, for our beta release, we focused on the ability to pin handouts - but  we do plan to support creating pins from scratch as well! Thank you all for your input thus far <3  Fran said: Hello pros!! We are LOVING the feedback and input thus far and are so excited. Its SO COOL seeing your pins out in the wild and in your games. Its also really nice to see some warm fuzzies - your good vibes are sending smiles across the team. Some of the biggest buckets of feedback we've gotten so far across the forums and our feedback forms are as follows: Pins : Sizing adjustments  Customization with colors, icons, and shapes Customization with images Ability to create a pin from scratch Pin-to-Pin navigation and other potential reactions. Support for Explorer mode Tooltip : See more content on the tooltip More control and consistency regarding info presented in the tooltip Improve content legibility  Images and GM notes in the 'custom' tooltip  Information Structure:  Player text is intermingled in the GM notes of a handout Players don't/shouldn't have access to long form handouts from which a tooltip is generated  We can't tackle everything at the same time ofc, but our devs are hard at work iteratively approaching your feedback so that we can get stuff out to you all!  A sidenote: if you create a pin from a header and then you change the text of that header, you will get the relink error.  Create pin from "Approaching the Inn" header in a handout  Change "Approaching the Inn" to "Approaching Sabor's Inn" in the handout.  Pin Tooltip Error  If you change the text, delete the old pin and drag a new one, its frankly the easiest way to handle that.

If you can create a Pin from scratch on the map... What'd be nice is: Right-click ANY token and convert it into a Map Pin.  This way we can take pre-existing "map pins" (before the Feature came out, for example Room Number tokens) and convert them into the official Map Pins feature.  Right Click > Set As Map Pin

Cool, cant wait for creating pin from scratch. Also, when that becomes a thing, if we can have a feature that will then allow us to create a handout from pin (assuming, these new pins doesnt require handouts) hypothetical example: Hidden Shield a player found under the bed, triggers a pin, explains what they found, the identified or arcana checked it and I can quickly click on "create a handout" of said pin for the player. Even better, allow them access to create a handout and automatically assigns it to them (journal/edit)

Very important point, yes! Novercalis said: So Transmogfy doesn't copy over pin. Wish it did. Should at the least, allow it if the handout is in the other game Edit: So thinking more on it, the current version of pin now "kinda sucks" (don't get me wrong, it is amazing) but for the purpose of this post and use case, it's still a bummer.  So I like to create multiple games as DM Only. These are modules and chapters of larger stories. Example: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle > Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye > Lost Mine of Phandelver > Dragons of Icespire Peak  each is it's own chapter/arc in my official table. So I let to set each story seperate, in a clean state and then create my official game table for my players and simply transmog everything I need over. It keeps things organized and all that jazz. So if I was to prep all my maps with pins, it becomes useless, as it all disappears. So this becomes a feature that I can't utilize. I'd have to once again pin stuff and the whole purpose of creating those previous games is to set it once and forget it. So I still have to rely on my own tokens and use Supernotes and GM info to store info for my players. -------------- Thus, as cool as it is, it links to the handouts and you can create this pins from handout, I wish we can just create the pins w/o the requirement of the handouts. Or make it optional, where you can link a pin to a handout/section. [[Handout Name: Section2]] [[Handout Name: Section 3]].
Awesome looking feature. I will definately be using this feature myself when released to Plus users. Any estimation on that timeline?
Hi Roll20 team.   Not sure if anyone else has said this but when you click on the image in the map pin to enlarge it, would it be possible to make the enlarged image bigger?   Many thanks!  Rob
Is there a way to be able to have more than 5 lines of text without it cutting off what the player can see? (its not showing the whole text from the handout) As a DM I can double click it and bring up the full text. But my players say that doesn't work for them.
Wanted to circle back on the topic relating to Demiplane handouts and Pin functionality. Map Pins integration for Demiplane handouts is currently a bit more limited than for Roll20 native handouts. Demiplane handouts will get title and image on the map pin (not player/gm notes), and clicking on the Pin will open up the full Demiplane handout. We are exploring ways in the future to enrich this experience. Dr DM said: Gauss said: Specifically, you asked about Demiplane sheets, not "Demiplane handouts". But, so that we are clear about what we are discussing, can you provide a screenshot of the handouts in Roll20 that are "Demiplane handouts"?  Wow, this was a hard request as it takes forever to load, and then it made me log into Demiplane AGAIN!
Hi There - we are currently working on a way to let users see more text within the tooltip, and we'll have something out before Map Pins feature is out of Beta! For the time being, if you give your players access to the Handout itself, they'll be able to access the full handout with a double-click of the pin as well. You can do that by clicking "show to players" within the handout, or specifying specific players in the edit menu of the Handout. DM BobbyD said: Is there a way to be able to have more than 5 lines of text without it cutting off what the player can see? Our team is hard at work implementing feedback from all of you - thank you for your contributions here, and keep an eye out on more features starting to trickle in over the next weeks! In the meantime, wanted to do a quick roundup of some of the bugs/enhancements we tackled in the last couple weeks. Please let us know if you continue to experience any of these still. Improved parsing of handout content for header Map Pins based on feedback; this fixed two issues:     one where a subset of pins pulled from D&D 5e Compendium headers didn't populate     where pulling a pin from specific headers caused the pin to show the "anchor not found" error Fixed an issue where Players couldn't open Handouts via a map pin until a refresh even if the handout has been shared with the Player Fixed a bug where ampersand character in a header broke its link to the map pin Fixed a bug that prevented a popped out Handout from properly scrolling-to-header when triggered from a map pin Improved user experience of Edit Menu window - no longer disappears on pin deselect, multiple windows can be opened at once Improved specificity for placement of pin control icons in handout (no longer on headers inside tables or headers in blockquotes) Improved user experience of Edit Menu window - window now follows proper z-indexing/focus rules in relation to other VTT windows (handouts, character sheets) For a full/latest list, please feel free to visit our Change Log .
What does it mean when my players try to double-click a pin, they get the message,"Your GM has not granted access to this pin's linked content". As a DM, I have no idea what this is. Please help!!

Hello forum friends! I've got two big feature updates for map pins: Sizes: Why don't ya'll head into the VTT and check out our  new size option s for pins in the customization tab! We have a range from  teeny tiny  to  pretty big  so that you can choose the size & emphasis that works for you (and your grid).  Let us know if you want more sizes or have additional requests around size.  Flavor text: When you drag a header from a handout from your GM notes section,  the blockquote beneath the header  can now automatically display as  player facing text.  Let us know what you think. :)
You forgot to add that when you click the thumbnail on the pic, the pic now displays much bigger!  Bravo :)

As an aside, we're currently looking at ways to reduce load times while using Demiplane through Roll20! If you're having to sign in more than once during a session, let me know and I'll take that feedback back to the team.
Hi Fran and the Roll20 Team, Thanks for the quick dev work on the pins! The size options are a huge improvement. I look forward to more!  2 thoughts (you may already be working on this) 1. Would it be possible to add a "no visible pin" size, or just "make pin invisible until clicked on. 2. Could we make it so clicking the nameplate selects the pin? OR make that an option. Thanks again for the excellent work!

Crispybit -  1. An invisible board object is an interesting concept but makes me a bit nervous - wouldn't it be too easy to lose it? Feel free to send me an example of what you are talking about in my DMs if you've used a pattern or concept like this before.  2. Cool, will ask the devs :)
Is there a way to have Boca talk with voice?

Cool, will ask the devs :)   Well since this update it seems all of my existing map pins are invisible so I guess I'm already beta testing this requested feature from Crispy... now if I could only click on them I might be able to see if they still respond lol. The handout still shows that it's linked, and if I'm on a different page clicking on the "Go to pin" button it does load the correct page... but no pins in sight / doesn't center on where the PIN was.
Map pins are a very interesting feature, kudos Roll20 !
Aikepah - Thank you for reaching out! Did you happen to add an addon or use an extension in your game? This is our first report of missing pins, so we are trying to get down to the bottom of the issue. We took a look at your game and found that some pins are showing up while others are missing (not just invisible). Are there any particular behaviors/steps you may recall (like adding an addon part of the way through placing pins, using an extension, etc) that are specific to the missing pins? If it's not addons or extensions, than the other information that may help us narrow down the root cause is: 1) browser you're using 2) your connection speed 3) whether you ever saw the pins when you placed them on the map (aka they disappeared later)? 4) what approximate dates might you have placed the pins versus what date you noticed they weren't there In case it's helpful, this is the breakdown of the missing pins: Handouts where pins are showing up: Race to Crab Temple - 5 pins Battle Map Scale - 1 pin Enemy of my Enemy - 5 pins Handouts where pins are missing: CG Keep - 1 pin showing , 9 pins missing The Cloud Peaks - 2 pins missing Aikepah said: Fran said: Crispybit -  1. Worked with the pins in my game tonight and they were a big hit. Definitely need more characters to fit along with a scroll ability for the players. Some of those room descriptions are LONG!…
RPGeezer stay tuned!

Fran I am still wondering, why would it be developed as the ability to choose 4 sizes, and not simply a Scrollbar? I see folks asking for scrollbar so that any size of text is accommodated.  RPGeezer said: Definitely need more characters to fit along with a scroll ability for the players. Really enjoying the map pins so far, and I've only scratched the surface of using them.  One issue I found helpful for them that might not be immediately obvious is using them in combination with the Teleport script.  In the past it has been difficult to make sure players are aware that stepping on a specific spot is going to teleport them to a different location.  If their characters should know where they will be teleported, then the players should as well.  Here is an example of a ship map split into four different sections with the Teleport script used to transfer players from different decks.  The Map Pins are used to allow players to easily see where there is a teleport pad as well as a brief description of where it leads: - Adam

Hi Lavi, You mean like a browser extension? No I don't usually have any extensions that do anything with roll20. I did install beyond20 to help someone test something but I don't think I had that installed when I noticed the issue. I added the pins pretty much right when the feature was released, hadn't had any issues with them. I did resize the map (page: CG Keep) but the pins were still there. I had revisited that page many times over the last few weeks because I had been using it to test Send to Chat reactions and I noticed the pins were all there throughout that. It wasn't until I checked a few days ago when I went to test some of the updates that I noticed they were gone.  Browser: Chrome Version 143.0.7499.42 Connection speed: 1.3 gb/s Pins were there for the 15 or 20 times I visited the page over the course of a couple weeks. Dates placed: Around November 13th (Visible over the next 4 weeks multiple occasions of visiting the page and seeing them there) Dates missing: Around December 13th The one for The Cloud Peaks (Page: Mountain 2) we had played on November 29th, and the pin was there then, I have not visit the page since or opened the handout. So I don't think there should have been anything I did that would have caused the pin itself to disappear from that page. The other page (CG Keep) the 1 pin that is showing I placed after I noticed the others were missing (4 days ago) while I was testing to see if I could figure out what was going on. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to test or other info I can give. *Edit* I just noticed all of my macros for that game are gone as well (not token macros, just the ones under the collection tab) so there's definitely some weird things happening to my game that might be messing with more than just the pins... It's fine for now so I'll just leave it as is if you want to use it for any sort of testing. Lavi said: Aikepah - Thank you for reaching out! Hi looking forward to using this. Can I make the pin invisible to players but still selectable?  - I find the pin a bit intrusive and I also would like to use pins as hidden easter eggs if my players happen to slide the mouse over something

You can make it very tiny, but not invisible to anyone who can still select it. A common request has been for a customizable icon, but that has not been promised anytime soon. You might find it better for the purpose you describe to use an invisible icon (set its opacity to zero) and give it a tooltip, rather than using a map pin.
I know map pins are in Beta right now, but I think a great use for them as they get more fleshed out is to be able to connect them to things beyond Handouts, like Treasure Chest sheets and Shop Sheets. I've started integrating those into my games and was disappointed to see that Map Pins cannot be connected to them. They're useful for lore bits with Handouts, but they could really be helpful with allowing players to directly interact with the Treasure Chest and Shop sheets without having to manually share them to all players every time.

Today my The One Ring 2e players expressed their pleasure with the Map Pins I'm using to put Rumours & Lore on The Shire map. So even my very simple use of it has been a bonus for my players.

The difficulty here is that Map Pins are a universal resource. By interacting with Handouts, they are available in every game and for every system.  Tying them to one sheet would do a disservice to the 1500+ other sheets available on Roll20. Maybe once the feature is out of Beta, however, there might be hope for some sort of API solution perhaps.
Suggestion: Make pins unaffected by "Hover to show nameplates" or make a second option for pins separate from tokens and ect.
Hi, First: Map Pins are GREAT :) Second:      Add general parameters applicables to new Map Pins (show tooltip, tooltip image, DM notes, ...)
dont know if this has come up but can the size of the pins not be locked to the grid size. i use them on my world maps and they are all the same size. map grid is set to 0.125, what i found out is if you make the grid smaller it starts making them the same size and if i change my world map not it would be 2 weeks of work with all the hand drawn stuff on the map and the map would be about 956x892 and that is insane cause at 10% map zoom you could not see more the what 100% sees now.
Did you see that you can now change the size of the pin? Click the pin and select "Edit", then select "Customization". Or are you asking that the size of the pins change automatically when you change the grid size? I didn't realize this thread existed; this is a copy paste of [this].  I’ve started using map pins a lot and I really like them. My only frustration is that I can’t seem to lock them in place. When I’m moving tokens or other elements on the map, I often end up accidentally dragging the pins as well. I hope to see a 'lock position' function in the future!

I love them just sad you dont take care of us plus members we never get anything cool please change that the games are already hard to afford. take better care of us small guys!!! I know you can do better.
Lately I've been having to be very precise on where exactly to double-click on a map pin in order to open the attached handout. If the pin has a tooltip, double-clicking anywhere on the tooltip opens the handout, but if there is no tooltip I have to make sure that my cursor is exactly  on a spot just below the center dot on  the map pin. This happens only on maps that have Dynamic Lighting enabled; on maps without DL, double-clicking anywhere within the map pin outline works every time. I don't know if this is site-specific or possibly particular to just my PC. It happens with both Chrome and Firefox. I've tried clearing cache and disabling browser add-ons.

Hi everyone! Today we’ve officially opened the Map Pins beta to all users - no subscription required.  Thank you all for your feedback to date that's helping us continue to improve the Pins feature, and we are looking forward to more! Please refer to  the new announcement thread here for additional questions, feedback, etc. Before we close this out, wanted to share a t a glance, new functionality released today: Ability to create pins from scratch (no handout required) Ability to override linked pin content with custom Image, Player Notes, and GM notes Scrollable, more readable Pin tooltips that showcase more text; more readable tooltips with Player/GM note tabs Deemphasized in-line pin Controls in handouts by default: "drag to add pin on board," "copy header link," and "go to pin" icons appear only on hover to declutter the handout view. Users have the option to always "show pin Controls in handouts," a setting available in the new "Accessibility" section in-Tabletop Settings Players see a pop-out icon in Pin's tooltip when they have access to the Handout Fix for a bug that caused nameplates to disappear when tooltip for the pin was disabled or map was resized
