Running Caves of Chaos, how the heck do I align something like this?

So I'm trying to align this monster of an image to the grid: http://www.theweem.com/images/cavesofchaos/caves_of_chaos_large_player.jpg I've tried for hour with all the different tools and nothing is getting this thing right. Is there something I can do in photoshop to scale this correctly? I'm practically pulling my hair out as it is.
nope - it is easy (once you knwo how) - do you have skype? I can talk you through it. OR : check this out : https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/3688/map-alignment-and-you-or-101-ways-to-get-your-grids-in-a-row#post-135812

I do it a bit differently and only took a few minutes in Photoshop, just a bit of math. Bring the map into Photoshop. That map is 1200 x 776 pixels. Then zoom all the way into the map until you get to pixels. Count how many pixels a square is, this map is 14 pixels per square. Divide those two numbers by the # of pixels a square is. and you get 85.71429 x 55.42857. We don't want partial grids so round those numbers up and multiply by 14. 86*14 = 1204 and 56*14=784. In photoshop change the canvas size to those two new numbers, 1204x784. Now you have a map that is 86 squares by 56 squares. Drag it into Roll20 and set the dimensions to 86x56. Thats it Edit2: Sorry, I left out one step. The problem with this map is the squares are actually 13.86 pixels. So what I did was in Photoshop I made a 14 pixel grid and then resized the image until the grids matched together. Edit: I just realized its 1 square is 10'. You will most likely want your map to be 1 square is 5'. Just double the dimensions to 172x112 and map tool will divide each square in half for you for your battles. Now of course this map is going to look a bit blurry because it is 14 pixels/unit vs Roll20's 70 pixels/unit, but it looks fine when I did it. If the grid isn't perfectly on it you nudge it over using the mouse and the ALT key so the map won't snap to grid. It might seem complex to some, but if you know how to use Photoshop its fairly easy to resize the graphic in Photoshop first so it just works in Roll20.

Here is the edited file if you want it. Just set the page to 172x112 and then drag the image to the page. Then set the dimensions of the graphic to 172x112. http://www.yousendit.com/download/UVJpSkhjR3M5NVdLRmNUQw

Jake, if you still need help aligning this map send me a PM and I will help. - Gauss
This is how I do it: 1. open the file in GIMP 2. determine the existing grid size in px (in your case it was 14x14) 3. Determine if there is any distortion of the map (there was, I had to "stretch" the image using the scale image feature in gimp, by 10 pix, determined by trial and error, 5 px at a time) 4. I like to re-size the map so it has a minimum of 25x25 px squares (use the scale image feature, I increase/decrease the entire image by the desired grid ratio. It was 14, and I want it at 25 so 25/14 = 1.78 so increase the map size by 1.78 using scale image feature) 5. I then will crop the image even with the grid as small as I can (in your case it was 1775 x 1125 after resizing to a 25 px grid) 6. Import the map to Roll20, drop it on a blank map. 7. set the map dims (1775 x 1125) 8. set the grid size (25 x 25) you are done here is the map re-sized to 1775 x 1125, using a 25 px grid https://www.dropbox.com/s/7gaift5lq5h4x7f/caves_of_chaos_large_player%20scaled.jpg

Higher res images are here. They fit on the grid perfectly. http://www.theweem.com/2012/02/01/caves-of-chaos-reimagined-by-weem/ Here I've fixed them up for Roll20. GM copy for printing and Player copy for Roll20. https://www.dropbox.com/s/joxw6z2wrr44114/Caves%20of%20Chaos.zip

I used that same map to create new ones of the Caves of Chaos. Mostly because I had to double the resolution of the image because it is done in one square = 10 feet and I wanted one grid square to be 5 feet. I ultimately split it up to one map per cave. Find them here... https://www.dropbox.com/s/4giussiizk40x4x/Caves_A_redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/siw2v4zf0949qh0/Caves_B_Redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/k21mi0ywqmiqlpo/Caves_C_Redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/vfdgvsfvn0q5u8j/Caves_D_E_Redo.png?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/cdn8uqa6eb5tc0x/Caves_G_redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/4weif8ptajq6dly/Caves_H_redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/9arkghb140l505k/Caves_I_redo.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/rcv9hmictshmvt5/Caves_J.jpg?m https://www.dropbox.com/s/ku9xhe3enpw99tn/Caves_K.jpg?m

OK, I compressed them down below 5MB, give it a try. https://www.dropbox.com/s/qqsse3kagblpw7r/caves_of_chaos_full%20176x114%20smaller.zip

Here is a screen capture. It fits the grid exactly and at 150% still looks great! You will notice that the Roll20 grid is lined up perfectly and its divided into 5' squares for use as a battlemap. You could turn the Roll20 grid opacity to almost zero so you would only see the original maps 10's squares. Might be a little less distracting. But leave the grid on so the tokens still snap to grid nicely.
Konrad, you have just saved me countless hours of building the entire dungeon from scratch. I'd throw money at you if I could. Thanks for all the community support.

Thanks for all the community support. :) no problem. I'm learning new things as I help others so I'm always up for it. Please feel free to shoot any requests my way. I'm going to have to go the route of recreating a dungeon. Later in the year I want to run Way of the Wicked using Roll20 and there aren't any maps available The ones in the module have the room numbers, etc and they aren't really high res. Its a great looking Adventure Path so I want to do it right with lots of visuals. If I can just find the time. Don't forget to share your experience with ROll20. How you set things up, how your session went, etc. We can all learn from each other. I've only been using Roll20 for a bit in Face to Face games, but would love to hear how others use it!
