The token "image" and the squares it occupies in the grid should be different parameters

Hey there, I've seem some people complain about the how some diferently shaped tokens get all distorted when snapped to the grid. To clarify what I'm talking about http://i.imgur.com/w4Zv7k5.png As you can see, once I resize to the apropriate 2x2 squares, the image becomes distorted. I know there are worarounds, but the way I see this could be fixed, and at the same time improve the roll20 experience, is this: the token image and squares occupied in the grid should be different parameters, that way the image could extend through the margins of the squares the token is actually occupying, like this: http://i.imgur.com/FsxmlIE.png The red square indicates the actual token size, which will be snapped to the grid. The image of the token is not limited by it's size, though it could be the case if we wanted, would be freely rearranged to the DM's wish, he should be able to drag more to the right or up till it's just the way he wants. As per the linked picture, we would also get a good idea of reach, characters could, for example, be positioned under a Hydras head, kinda like this (http://i.imgur.com/tFiU304.png). I do believe that this would greatly improve the way we play. What do you guys think?

If we're talking PF/D&D, the creature should fit entirely within the space they "occupy"; just like a human isn't as wide as the 5' space they occupy, a larger creature isn't actually 10' wide. The space a creature occupies is supposed to include room to maneuver. In other words, you're trying to depict a large creature as occupying a large space, but visually be as large as a huge creature is supposed to be. Beyond that, doing this would be visually cluttered and confusing, and you can accomplish the same by simply editing the token image to include the visual indicator of what space they occupy.

For altering the image I would need photoshop skills, which I do not have and don't think it should be a requirement for a DM to set the token image the way he wants. I do get what you're trying to say about the the monster fitting his square, but that are some instances where that just doesn't work, take the roper for example, he has 50ft reach with his strands! and it's tokens usually represent this, trying to fit all that in a 2x2 square is not only frustrating but defeats the purpose of having the token in the first place, since we wont be able to view the token image when its squeezed inside it's space. Like this: http://i.imgur.com/5u2CGHB.png Also, I don't think roll20 should be limited by rules like this, while this is true for D&D/PF, it might not hold for other systems. I believe broadening DM's options should be the goal, not tailoring the roll20 tools to fit this or that system.
By the way, I have no experience with programing and thus have no idea if what I'm sugesting is extremely hard to do (or even impractical), I understand that this would be a serious problem with my suggestion. But I have a firm conviction that the tokens would be more visualy appealing if we could do that, and maybe it would even stimulate people to buy more from the marketplace.

I'm necro-upvoting this because I want this feature too. I played around with the idea of adding some visual flair to my games, but in order for it to be worthwhile the tokens end up kinda weird, which also makes the token bars misplaced as well. Here's an example image I made of my little experiment with this (I was intending to make a thread for it, but found the topic already addressed here): 1. Is the token as it exists on the board left alone. 2. Is the token selected, showing the actual size and bounding box of the token. 3. Is how I would like the bounding box to be.
Some simple photo shop you could make the bottom have a square market to fit its base that would help. Next i would say drag its size with .alt. then when you have it right open its settings and just save it. Then when you drag it will snap to grid But the size is locked.

The image already is laid out in such a way to give the image the right placement as a token, but as a result the token takes up more space. All of that transparent space is still clickable/selectable. Which also causes the placement of the bars.

Have you tried using bar three in this example for HP?

No, but it wouldn't change the issue at hand. Realized another thing resulting from this. Token auras become weird as well, since the aura is calculated using the size of the token.

The answer is to use tokens designed to fit within their used space. Trying to get them to extend beyond their occupied space means that every token would need custom settings. I'm not sure how you would indicate that, and I suspect most users wouldn't like the extra steps added to every token. There's also a player aspect to consider. In the case of the hydra or the roper above, sure the tentacles or tail could extend beyond their occupied space. But this indicates reach now, not targetable area. The players have no idea how close they are to something, and whether they can attack it. How would you account for that? As for non-square tokens, it might be better to invest a small amount of time to learning a few image manipulation tricks. It doesn't require Photoshop. Almost any image editing program can open a PNG, make the canvas area square, and save.

So it wouldn't be any extra steps, just extra steps for those who want to add and configure this feature onto a particular token. No harder than adding Aura or Emits Light or Show Nameplate. I personally think this Suggestion could be accomplished with new settings on the "handles", which also need work for scaling at different zoom levels anyway (Link to related suggestion: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1242825/token-ha... ). You could have sub-zero handles for the occupy-square idea. Alt-Shift-Drag inward to show what you want as the token positioning base that fits in-grid. Everything outside that handle box is your overflow area (lance, spear, sword, tentacles, rear wheels, back legs, tail, etc).
