Trouble finding/making Modern Age maps (especially Interiors) for World of Darkness game, Help me?

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to find/make maps that look to be part of a modern and urban environment right now. Ones that I can use in a World of Darkness game and specifically Vampire the Requiem in this case. At the moment I don't really care if they have a Dark feel to them or look like the maps are of places "at night." I just would like to find a set of decent maps that have the right look to them, and more over I'd love to find some interior maps that look like Modern interiors. Heck even interiors that look set in the 1920's would work in some cases for me. Take an example of this one situation I'm trying to come up with maps for in a potential scenario my players might come across. There is this old Hotel in the middle in the city that was the site of gruesome murders in the late 1930's that caused the hotel's closure, and it now sits abandoned. When the hotel was closed all the furniture and things were left inside and so stepping into it is like stepping back in time. Additionally the murders have left the hotel haunted and the players will have to deal with the haunting to progress. This is but one example, and since my game takes place in New York City I have a lot of different possible modern environments to try to build. One especially hard one is the Abandoned Subway tunnels that would make up part of the Nosferatu Necropolis. So you all probably are getting the idea at this point, I need to find the maps or in some come across a way that I can make the kinds of maps I'm after. Which thus far I'm having no luck in finding anything that will really work well for me. Anyone here have some help for me?

Hi Huntress, Many outstanding art packs from Stewart Werley, (Warehouse, Precinct, Bank, Shops, etc) https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... From the prolific Brass Badger packs look for ones titled Modern or Metro-Matic or Dystopia, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Phillip Wright (CubeForms and Modern Room Builder), https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Art packs by Simon Powell (Modern Lab, CityScape, Modern Ruins), https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Anosina art packs (You might like the apoc one, there are also futuristic styles here), https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Outdoor "Post Apoc" scenes, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Plexsoup isometric might be cool for making your own subway tunnels, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo... Hope this helps! Many of these have complete rooms, some even have complete environment maps with whole buildings. Look for those because they can really save you a lot of time, and get a playable room or building ready quickly on a map page in Roll20. On the other hand, many of them offer pieces, tiles, furniture, walls, floors, that you could use to assemble your own custom location maps. This gives you much more flexibility, but takes GM prep time to assemble. Sometimes you can use a combination of both, such as putting a few pre-made rooms together, then adding on extra furnishings and hallways, doors and exteriors, using the tiles and pieces.
I've already looked at those and while some are helpful to a small degree none of them really offer me everything I need. More over I'm on a very fixed income and can't afford to go buying a bunch of packs such as those things. I need a free or cheap alternative that can cover at least a good chunk of my needs. I'm sorry I didn't note this earlier.
I have used screen captures from www.floorplanner.com to good effect before many of the art packs that Gold listed were available. You can get a free account and peruse floorplans that people have created and shared on the site. It will take some time to find useful items and even longer to piece them together.
I have seen and used Floorplanner.com before the unfortunate thing is that free accounts can only have 1 project. Which means I can't design all the maps I want with it. Even if I paid for a plus membership I'm limited to 5 projects a year, and that's if I was willing to pay for it. If the gallery had a search feature to make looking through the posted floor plans easier it would be more useful to me to find what I'm after.

As a map maker, I generally don't make modern maps because they require more "furniture" than dungeons and forests, and they tend not to have a high demand as the people that play modern games are not as numerous as those that play fantasy. Hence why there's few modern resources in comparison. What I would recommend is Google SketchUp, as there is a considerable amount of resources for the program, and after creating your buildings, take screenshots from a birds-eye view.

Understandable, but one can't help but acknowledge there is a need for such a thing even if smaller than for other genres.

Hey Huntress, sorry to hear about your woes. I do have some modern maps on the marketplace, with more on the way, so I definitely acknowledge that it's an area that needs service. Unfortunately I can't give them away for free: they take an enormous amount of time, and work to produce. What at I can suggest for free or super duper cheap versions if you dont want to draw them yourself is looking up old floor plans. Stuff that's in the public domain. Some libraries even have various plans in their microfilm rooms, and you might be able to get a photocopy to scan for a few cents. The same library probably also has a "how to draw floor plans" book in their how-to section with examples and tips to make your own rooms look realistic. I really like the Bob Villa one. Then you can cut the photocopied rooms apart and tape them together, photocopy the mess, and voila.

Thanks Badger I'll keep that in mind, though I'd have to find a way to scan them on to a computer then transfer them to mine to use on roll20. As I don't own a Scanner (or any peripheral like a printer) so I can't do it at home myself.

You should be able to find a lot of stuff on google images, to convert hard copies try Kinko's, they are pretty cheap.
I've already been googling for things to use I had been doing that for a long time before I made the thread.
Sadly, I've found the general maps on Roll20 lacking. Most cater to the rather understandable larger percentage playerbase. ( and why wouldn't you? That's just good money ). Your best friend as it stands is google maps and the good old print screen / into paint / crop and slap on the sheet. As for Floorplans, I would use pinterest -- it's helped me for basic floorplans for both modern buildings and starwars ships alike. I would also recommend perhaps picking up Sims 2 or 3 for floorplans, as that'll give you decent and quick methods of creating semi-realistic houses ... top down, screenshot, done. I think steam has one of them and if not, shouldn't be too hard to find sims 2 online -- was before EA shoved it all into account BS. If none of this is helpful, at least enjoy the free bump. This is a problem for most people, especially for those of us that play WOD in a modern setting.

As I don't own a Scanner (or any peripheral like a printer) so I can't do it at home myself. If you have a smart phone, you can get an app to scan things in. For iOS I love Scannable. That app scans the pages I want (using the phones camera) and then I can send the scanned as a PDF or an image (tiff, I believe).
You might be able to find some blueprints/floorplans for ritzy motels with a google search. Upload to your roll20 account and you're good to go. For city streets, you can use snip tool or screen shot a google maps image of whatever city you run your game in. But really, for your game, I would actually recommend not using maps. Consider using evocative images to make splash pages for each scene you want to run, accompanied by appropriate music played in the background on the juke box. WoD games tend to be very RP intense and mood oriented, and you might be surprised at how well they work when you rely on description and imagination, with the help of some good images culled from google, Pinterest and so forth. Theatre of the mind with some art and sound props to help with the imagining, if you get my drift.

As you've had some awesome suggestions already and the thread is in danger of going 'off-topic' I'll be closing it now, as stated the marketplace has some useful content for your game, anything beyond that is outside the scope of these forums. Good luck with your search, your players are lucky to have a DM so dedicated to their experience :)
