How come drawing shapes, like a circle for a stalagmite, ends up describing an area with a lighting gap at one point in the circle? I would have thought it would just draw a clean, circular, light-blocking circumference ?
DL is based on a vectoring principal. So are the drawing tools, because it's looking for "Strait" lines, it'll have major issues. If you take a quick moment to use the polygonal line tool around the circle, it'll give you *much* finer grade control... Long story short, circles + DL = Rough time.
Most people who regularly use DL also recommend to use an X through stalagmites, tree trunks, or other objects of similar nature. This allows the players to see the artwork while providing the light blocking of the DL.
All drawings on the DL layer should be polygon/line. There are problems with just about every other shape. Additonally, polygon/lines should be single segments whenever possible (see Square/Rectangle). Square/Rectangle: This works fine but shapes on the DL layer should be polygon/line single segments whenever possible. This is because it is easier to select and manipulate single segment lines than shaped lines or objects. Circle/Oval: Does not work as you might expect. Instead, use polygon/line to create a circle. For fine detail circles you can set the zoom level to 150% with the Alt+Mousewheel zoom also set to maximum. For most precise results draw a cyan circle on the token layer and then use a yellow Polygon/line on the DL layer. Yellow +Cyan = Green (it will show where you are off). Remember, Ctrl+Z will remove a segment you do not like while you are drawing the polygon/line. I suggest doing no more than 1/2 of the circle as a single object. For large circles I suggest 1/4 circle as a single object. For very tiny circles you can create a larger circle and then shrink it down using the scalers. If you are doing 1/2 or 1/4 of a circle you can grab all sections at once and shrink them down together. Freehand: Under no circumstances should you use Freehand on the DL layer. It takes up a lot of system resources.
