Moving items from layer to layer?

Is there a way to move an item from one layer to another? For instance, if I want to bump a token from the token/object layer to the GM overlay (say, in the case of a token becoming "invisible"), or if I want to drop a token to the background because it's "dead" (although that can be handled by Z-ordering). I looked for Cut and Paste, but there's only copy-paste it seems. It would be very nice to have, as a GM, the option "To GM Overlay" or "To Background" as options in addition to "To front" and "To back." Thanks, Chris
A great idea. We'll add it to the list. Thanks!
I was just trying to figure this out as well. I've got a room full of giant rats that need to be hiding in the ceiling :)

yes! Definitely vital for invisibility too!

I was just trying to figure this out as well. I've got a room full of giant rats that need to be hiding in the ceiling :) For this kind of think I have a FOW hidden area below the real map. There I place any hidden token. On the GM layer I put a marker so I can remember where the tokens has to be when they are discovered. My soloution is not perfect, but a pretty good work around until this feature is implemented.
I've been able to copy/paste from Objects/Tokens layer to Maps & Background. But the rotation of items is lost.
Indeed, so far I've been "hiding" tokens on the GM layer and moving dead creatures to the map layer with the cunning use of copy/paste/delete also, all whilst being careful to make sure I un-tick the "has a turn" box in the token settings and reloading the turn tracker before I do (real-time initiative updating would again be good here). Either a way to move tokens between layers directly without copy/paste/delete and/or an 'invisible' option in the settings would be fab.

Abd al Rahman's solution is the sort of thing that I think should be the standard. Table similar, for sure.

I also made an entire map-page that is all FOW, and placed it before the player's starting page. I labeled it STASH, and as I'm building the campaign, I throw in tokens and stuff that I find that I might want later. This way, if I decide I need something suddenly, I don't have to hunt for it during play. This, for me, is very table-similar, as I usually pull out a bunch of mini's before play and keep them behind my screen or on a table behind me, for later use.
I realize that "table-similar" is a driving force here, but unless adding the layer-shifting is Nintendo-hard code wise, standardizing on a multi-step workaround seems likes making Roll20 more user-unfriendly than it needs to be, in the interest of preserving some kind of table-verisimilitude. Perhaps I'm not really representative, but I don't look at a VTT for table-similar, I'm looking for "table-improved," and easing fiddle like tracking invisible tokens or keeping a stock of minis handy until needed or easily manipulating the tokens about the map, and so forth is part of that for me. The workarounds are functional, of course, but they seem like taking the long way.
I'm with you Chris, we end up with a lot of invisible NPCs and being able to either quickly move them between layers OR have a "hide from players" checkbox would make my life significantly easier.

In another similar thread, someone mentioned that they would select all items and use copy-and-paste to change layers. They stated that all items would be in the same place and orientation after, which I've found to be untrue, even if I copy and paste within a layer. So if I select three tiles on the map layer, such as a hallways I've made of multiple tiles, when I paste it again, it's not all arranged the same. OSX Lion 10.7.3 and Chrome 18.0.1025.168 The attached screenshot is an "after" shot. The three in a row were copied, and the other three are the paste result. I also often wish, when working on a big map, that I could click a grid point and say Paste and have it appear there, instead of near the copied item.
This is implemented in the next update which goes out later today.
Riley, did you implement a filter so that tokens that are not in the token layer are never displayed in the turn order list? Otherwise is makes no real sense to hide tokens somewhere as un-hiding them takes a lengthy trip to their properties.
Henry, that's also on the list of things I'll be working on shortly, yes. One step at a time :-)
The layer changes work perfectly! I tested them out today, and the combination of context menu & keyboard shortcut worked great. One thing (well, two actually) First, I'm curious why Ctrl+O for the Token layer? I'm assuming it's tOken, but if that's the case, was Ctrl+T already taken? Also, anyone else notice that now to shift through layers you use Ctrl+OMG? Easter egg, coincidence, or just my juvenile mind?
Ken: Great! Glad that worked well for you. I actually couldn't go with Ctrl+T because apparently browsers will absolutely not let you override the default "New Tab" command no matter what you do. And I most certainly did not do "OMG" on purpose! Never, never, never... :-)
Oh geeze, I only use Ctrl+T a few hundred times a day and somehow my brain totally blanked on that.
I'm not sure if there were more changes yesterday or this morning, but when I tried layer shifting tokens today, ctrl+shift+O/G didn't work quite right. It only moved a single token instead of all of the highlighted ones.
Yeah, sorry, I'm working right now on fixing that. Should be fixed here shortly.
This should be fixed now. Let me know if you notice any other issues! :-)
