Someone recently decided to try and introduce me to D&D over discord, but due to the differences in our timezones, they were unable to get me very far in a campaign (Solo with an NPC, a bit of 18+ content). They suggested that I look for a proper group with more players, and of course, more readily available for my timezone. For a bit of context, I am Australian, which makes it fairly rare to meet anyone who's online around the same times as I am.. let alone be interested in Tabletop games like D&D. I don't really care too much about playing optimally, let alone doing meta stuff as I probably lean more to roleplay than someone who wants to deal a lot damage. I also kind of like going for weird characters, be they cute & adorable or just not make a whole lot of sense without a ton of reasoning in base D&D. I also can't really use voice chat until April due to having a room mate who doesn't want me talking, and I don't own any of the handbooks and kinda just use a PDF thing for the player's handbook.. which is probably bad.. but I've also never really played and I'm unsure if I want to invest money into it. I spose to give an example; I ended up making two characters due to the difficulty we had meeting up for the campaign. The first one I made entirely from the player's handbook, but without really researching things.. a "Drow Druid" who's also a Charlatan (Has two Identities). I found out much later about D&D's nature of Drows and their hierarchy and.. spider worship.. and all that. And also that a Drow Druid was very unlikely to happen. So, I had a circle of druids adopt her before all that and built her up from there, which was fun. I was also able to make the excuse that she'd seen giant/spiders, various wolves and bears and other things this way. I also made her fairly short, which I am very aware is not the case for female drows as they are usually very tall. Very tall. But I mentally decided that was probably because of her growing up outside. In the sun. Starting at level 3, I also got to be a bear.. which ended up turning that session into a scene from Goblin slayer as stuff ended up pretty overkill. The other character ended up almost entirely homebrew, using a/the Kobold variant race.. because the default Kobold is honestly insulting with the -2 Str and the ability to cower, while the Kobold variant changes that -2 Str modifier into halving carrying capacity (as Kobolds are Smol), gets rid of the pathetic cowering which honesty doesn't sound fun to rp and of course, adds "sub-races" with different abilities (Burrows, Loredrake & Winged Urd). For this character, I was just going for a specific theme and of course, just overall cuteness (altering her design a bit from the base D&D appearance that I tend to find when looking up images to look cuter). When I first explained my idea to the friend who was trying to introduce me to the game, they kind of immediately shut me down and called it kind of bland and I guess boring. But then I continued to explain the idea to them to better sell the idea, the idea of an exiled Kobold whom claimed that they would come back to the den as a dragon and make them pay. (In an adorable fit that no one would take seriously, of course.). I started out by trying to make this character as a Sorcerer with the Draconic Bloodline, from the player's handbook. Unfortunately, Sorcerers are kind of confusing, and not exactly what I was after as it kind of lacked flair that I was looking for. This is when my friend pointed me towards something called "The Ancient Dragon Patron", a homebrew warlock patron someone made that while contained a few.. underwhelming elements to it, was something I could honestly work with much better than the Draconic Bloodline thematically.. thus, my adorable kobold's backstory got a full work over as she went from abused Winged Urd to Loredrake.. and finally, an ill omen that caused her kobold community to exile her to keep their mighty, resurrected hero, safe. It's kind of funny, because the beginning of her own backstory isn't even about her, she's barely the focus as the fallen Kobold hero, and her "brother" take the spotlight until she's kicked out and comes into contact with the dragon who gives her an actual viable path to follow.. even if she wasn't actually all that keen on it personally. (Her claim was solely out of frustration due to abuse and abandonment, she didn't actually want to be a dragon considering her circumstances and personal opinion about herself.). Of course, she was designed to be a super cute character that any party that she was in.. and most other people, wouldn't take very seriously, particularly during early levels.. but would sometimes have moments of spotlight if triggered enough. Her weapon of choice is a dagger in the form of a claw (which I dubbed the Kobold's Paw), and of course as a Warlock, she has access to the cantrip Eldritch Blast.. and a +4 modifier to both Dex and Charisma (Which I could've had +5 for dex due to rolling both an 18 & 16, but I decided against it). I would personally prefer to use my Pre-made Kobold character than to make a new one for a game, and if possible, I'd like to have a lasting campaign over something that ends quickly after a single, or few sessions.. but if people just want to help introduce me to the game and only really plan to do a short game for that, then I'll create a character for it that I'm not really attached to. If anyone is interested in any of the characters, I'm more than happy to go into a bit more detail about them.. although I am still planning on using the Druid for my friend's solo campaign whenever we're able.
