Alright folks. I need people to fill in the ranks for an Interplanar Mercenary Guild known as the Lock and Key. They operate out of Sigil, a city in the Outlands, the world between worlds, that is connected to each and every plane of existence. They are seasoned warriors who have fought through countless trials across the universe in pursuit of glory and gold. And they currently consist of two drunkards, and a frog. That's why they need you! The game is a series of mini-adventures that all take place across the world of Faerun and Beyond, with some recurring characters, a hub city, and a few world-ending events here and there come time. Currently, for example, the party is escorting a group of students from a Magic Academy from Waterdeep through a field trip in Ysgard, or the Eternal Battlefield. Now, you may be part of the group already, recruited while they were away, and sent in as support. Or, the group is able to recruit on the fly. Time, and your application, will tell. If you're interested, follow the steps below to submit an application, and I'll take a look! Name: Age: D&D Experience (None Required, New Players Encouraged): Other tabletop games you fancy: Anything else you want me to know (things you like in a game, things you really don't like in a game, and above all, this helps me figure out what you feel is important for me to know, which helps me figure out who you are): ======= After that, give me a character you want to work with. You'll be starting at level 8, so you've got some experience under your belt, but you're not a demigod. You're just good at what you do. You can handle yourself. And that's why you were picked up. With all that said, here's what I need... Character Concept (Doesn't need to be a final build, I'm just looking for a first draft idea): Questions for your Character (to add some spice) How did your character get into interplanar circles?: Why did your character get introduced to the leader/manager of the Lock and Keys, Eichel Green? Or is their recruitment a spur-of-the-moment type of thing?: What is your character's biggest inspiration?: What is your character's biggest secret?: What is their greatest strength?: What is their greatest weakness?: Who is their greatest ally?: Who is their greatest foe?:
Name: Ian Age: 25 D&D Experience (None Required, New Players Encouraged) : Very experienced, been playing 5e since it game out, and some other games before that. Other tabletop games you fancy: Love PbtA, really starting to get into some of the smaller indie games.  Anything else you want me to know (things you like in a game, things you really don't like in a game, and above all, this helps me figure out what you feel is important for me to know, which helps me figure out who you are): I love the RP and storytelling aspect of RPGs more than the crunchy math and tactical combat.  ======= After that, give me a character you want to work with. You'll be starting at level 8, so you've got some experience under your belt, but you're not a demigod. You're just good at what you do. You can handle yourself. And that's why you were picked up. With all that said, here's what I need... Character Concept (Doesn't need to be a final build, I'm just looking for a first draft idea): An Aasimar from Elysium who had his village destroyed by invading demons. Lost an alone, he wandered into the woods where he found a powerful entity known as the Bloodthorn Grove. There, he ripped his heart out and replaced it with a mass of thorns from this Patron, vowing his service in exchange for a new outlook on life.  Questions for your Character (to add some spice) How did your character get into interplanar circles?: After the changing experience of meeting the Grove and ripping his heart out, and now with no chains in Elysium, he would have wanted to explore the planes, to broaden his perspective and see all the multiverse had to offer. Why did your character get introduced to the leader/manager of the Lock and Keys, Eichel Green? Or is their recruitment a spur-of-the-moment type of thing?: He would have definitely settled down in Sigil, as it is certainly the most convenient place to live for one who wants to explore the planes. Perhaps he saw a job posting or heard of the opportunity, and would have certainly tried to introduce himself.  What is your character's biggest inspiration?: The new, positive outlook provided by the Grove is inspiring to him, he now fully understands the value of life, and wishes to protect life and see it in all its forms. What is your character's biggest secret?: The existence of the Grove and its effects on him. What is their greatest strength?: Unwavering optimism in the future. What is their greatest weakness?: Having nearly died once, an almost cowardly desire to not die. Who is their greatest ally?: Once he would have said his family, but they are long gone. Now, his ally is the Grove and its followers. If he sees any others who are lost or alone or apathetic, he has a desire to take them to the Grove as well, so they too can learn of its powers and see the joy of living.  Who is their greatest foe?: The demon that destroyed his village as a youth.

Name : Payden Age : 25 D&D Experience (None Required, New Players Encouraged) : 10 Months of 5e Other tabletop games you fancy : I've played a few sessions of Call of Cthulhu, Everyone is John, and a few others. I like them. Anything else you want me to know (things you like in a game, things you really don't like in a game, and above all, this helps me figure out what you feel is important for me to know, which helps me figure out who you are): Roleplay > Exploration > Intrigue > Combat imo I enjoy all of it. Those are just my preferences. IMO the rules exist to facilitate story telling. They are guidelines for doing so. The point of the game is to tell an entertaining story for all. ======= Character Concept (Doesn't need to be a final build, I'm just looking for a first draft idea) : A Valkyrie in Norse mythology is essentially what amounts to an angel. A servant of the gods who decides who dies & lives on the battlefield. So, my character would be a female warrior with both divine & arcane power. Healing & blessing/cursing while in the fray of battle. This particular character would be a cloistered bookish type, seeking to hone herself as she believes she needs to live to a higher standard. Less on street smarts, but more on book smarts, at least within her purview of knowledge. She'd have been a sailor in her formative years. How did your character get into interplanar circles? : Seeking to destroy evil and was lead there by way of omens, signs, and prophecies along with like-minded individuals pointing her to it as a way to seek other also-like-minded people. Why did your character get introduced to the leader/manager of the Lock and Keys, Eichel Green? Or is their recruitment a spur-of-the-moment type of thing? : Same answer as above. It felt right and made sense. What is your character's biggest inspiration? : The god she serves, Valkur, Lesser Deity, former Mortal, God of Sailors & Storms who overcame the evil Goddess of the sea, Umberlee. What is your character's biggest secret? : She is not a normal human. This is not something she makes known to just anyone. It's a secret she fiercely guards and only entrusts to people she'd trust with her life. And her voice booms like thunder when she speaks. This is why she doesn't speak with her mouth, and instead uses Minor Illusion to simulate speech (Think like a Ventriloquist). What is their greatest strength? : Determination, her good heart, and the passion that burns within her to serve others, along with her natural talent for arcane magic. What is their greatest weakness? : Insecurity about her voice. It is evidence of her inability to control her powers. Something she can't hide or seemingly resolve or control. Who is their greatest ally? : After the god she serves and her patron, one of his Valkyries, it's the people she's helped along her journey seeking her purpose. Safety in numbers. Her allies & friends. Who is their greatest foe? : TBD; but until then, her own self. She judges others harshly. However, the one person she judges more so is herself. I have some more questions for this character to give you an idea of her personality. Presume that she's being asked these questions by someone she trusts without question. Someone she'd tell the honest truth to without holding anything back. What is something the party doesn’t know about you? I love dragons and everything about them. They fascinate me. I revert to a childish nature when it comes to them. Why though, is a mystery to me and everyone who knows. What is something you regret? I once went into a tavern to rest for the night. An old man was there who didn't seem to be in the best of health. I decided I would "speak" (gestures/writing/Minor Illusion) to him in the morning. After I woke up, he had died. I decided that I would never put something important like that off again. Describe the last time you had a really good laugh. When I was 12, I was playing in a tree with my friends. One of them fell and landed in a pile of leaves. He was fine, but the way he fell was comical. This laugh is what caused me to have the nickname "Boomy". I have been mostly stalwart & solemn since. Describe your most recent nightmare. On a sunny day I was walking on a long path of stonework. I could tell it had been going on for a while and felt it would continue on for a while longer still. I felt as though an impending darkness was behind me, but was too afraid to look back. I finally do and wake up, unable to remember what I saw after I turned. Everyone has a guilty pleasure, what’s yours? I sing when alone and far from anyone. Sing my heart out. I love to sing, even if I feel I'm not supposed to do so given me abilities. Describe your perfect afternoon. Laying under a tree with a distant storm rolling in and the cool wind blowing powerfully as I nap. What is something your character is trying to improve about themselves? My control. Over my life, my power, and my destiny. Everyone has a nickname. What’s yours? Who calls you that? What do you think about it? "Boomy". The other children. It is mean, but makes me sound powerful, so I like it even if I won't let anyone know. Describe a childhood friend. Someone who looks past my quirks or found them enthralling rather than disturbing. Describe a childhood rival. Someone who drives me to be the best I can. Who sets an example, even if they antagonize or oppose me. When was the last time you felt like you lost control? What happened? The first time my powers surged forth and activated. I was ... 18? For ... I don't know how long, my life was hell as I was scorched from the inside and didn't understand what was going on or when it would stop. As everything around me was burned away by radiant lightning, I felt utterly helpless. This is why I study so intensely. I must control it, lest it destroy me. Now you’ve encountered [BBEG] in the flesh. Are you afraid? Why or why not? No, because it is my destiny to oppose evil. If anyone is to do it, it's me. Fear will not  do. The quest is over, and you have downtime. What do you do when apart from the party? Travel and spread the word of Valkur. Praying, proselytizing, and being generally helpful to other travelers. Meditate as well to maintain control. Describe a moment when you felt vulnerable. Traveling on ships with a bunch of men for weeks at a time is not a comfortable experience for a lady. You are basically at their mercy. It's a good thing I'm so imposing. Have you ever told anyone "I love you."? Why, or why not? Yes. Because they needed to hear it, and I needed them to know. ... I hope they're alright. Who do you look up to? I'm taller than any other human I've ever met, and a holy warrior. Things look up to me. I only look up to Valkur and his Valkyries. Who do you revile? Anyone Evil. People who do things for themselves at others expense. Particularly those who take away personal rights & liberties. Especially people who harm others in mental & spiritual ways far beyond the physical. Describe an irrational fear you have. Do you show it? Falling short of the mark. Not being good enough for what I am.  No, not usually. Life is too wonderful to feel down, but sometimes I still get that way. But I try not to show it because I am a symbol of my people's faith made real. Something tangible they can see even if Valkur is far off and away from all of us. What interests you outside of battle? Any hobbies? Do others know? Aside from spreading the faith and personal improvement, I like playing with puppets, particularly shadow puppets, studying magic, and cooking. No, yes, and yes. Describe a moment where you felt like a hero. What did you think about it? The day I first threw lightning ⚡ [It was just an electric version of Firebolt, so a cantrip] . I thought it was so amazing. I ran around screaming "I'M JUST LIKE VALKUR." ⚔ until the priest had to put me in a headlock to get my attention ❗. Describe a moment where you felt like a villain. Do you regret it? The priest had to get my attention because the lightning ⚡ I threw started a fire. Yeah. Practice magic responsibly kids. I only regret it somewhat. I didn't know what I was doing. I regret being a child I guess? [This whole interview, imagine her gesturing furiously to convey all this meaning.]
Name: Troy     Age: 34 D&D Experience (None Required, New Players Encouraged): About 6 months, mostly as a player, a small amount as DM. Other tabletop games you fancy: I don't know much about other tabletop games at the moment. I've heard good things about 5 Rings, Call of Cthulu, and 13th Age (I think it's called). I'm somewhat interested in Starfinder Anything else you want me to know (things you like in a game, things you really don't like in a game, and above all, this helps me figure out what you feel is important for me to know, which helps me figure out who you are): I like all aspects of the game. At the moment, I probably enjoy combat and exploration the most, because I'm not great at role playing yet. It takes me awhile to get a feel for a character, usually (though I seem to have an easier time getting in to the "head" of monstrous characters, like kobolds). If I'm not engaged in combat, then I love a good puzzle. Puzzles can be really difficult to do right, because if it's too difficult with a solution that is too obscure, it can just frustrate, but when it's balanced right, and there's enough opportunity to get the clues needed to work it out, they can be really satisfying to complete. ======= After that, give me a character you want to work with. You'll be starting at level 8, so you've got some experience under your belt, but you're not a demigod. You're just good at what you do. You can handle yourself. And that's why you were picked up. With all that said, here's what I need... Character Concept (Doesn't need to be a final build, I'm just looking for a first draft idea): I've got a few different concepts I could work with. I enjoy coming up with character concepts, so anything I give you here isn't by any means my one and only idea. One concept I've been tossing around lately is a Scourge Aasimar Zealot Barbarian. I'm not 100% locked in on a personality yet, but I kind of want to play up the "edgelord" look, but go against type somehow on the personality. Part of what I'm thinking for a backstory is that he is essentially orphaned in the world (no family), so he goes searching for the only family he knows might be out there: the celestial being whose blood runs through his veins. BTW, I keep saying he, but I have no problem (and actually sometimes prefer) to play a female. Questions for your Character (to add some spice) How did your character get into interplanar circles?: Being that his ultimate goal is to find this celestial grandpapa of his, I'm going to say that as he was adventuring, he actively sought out ways to gain access to interplanar travel. It might have happened through an item, or it may have been that he found a portal on one of his adventures and that gave him his first access to the planes. Why did your character get introduced to the leader/manager of the Lock and Keys, Eichel Green? Or is their recruitment a spur-of-the-moment type of thing?: I'm going to say that, being as he has no clue where to start looking, he sought out people with more extensive access and experience with planar travel, hoping that through them, he might learn more about his heritage. What is your character's biggest inspiration?: What is your character's biggest secret?: What is their greatest strength?: What is their greatest weakness?: Who is their greatest ally?: Who is their greatest foe?: I apologize that I can't answer these last questions more fully. I'm fairly early in developing this character.
