would it be possible in the future to change the code such that by default camera and mic were off/muted on connection and had to be enabled after connecting? It's a little disconcerting to have it already on the second you log in to a game.

You can disable this in your browser settings, but off by default would be a nice option. It has been suggested before but failed to garner enough votes. If you open a suggestion on this, I'd certainly throw one of my votes at it.

Hello Jason U., That is controlled by the Browser. Please see the information below. If you have any additional questions, feel free to let us know. Best! Chrome   Navigate to the Settings > Site Settings page. Then select select the option you wish to choose for both the Microphone and Camera. Firefox Navigate to the Options > Privacy & Security page. Under Permissions choose the settings you would like for Firefox to use for specific pages.  Additionally, be sure not to hit "Remember this decision" as it will save it and won't ask again. You will have to remove that decision in the same Permission area for that site.
