Though there are fantastical elements in the game Shadows of Esteren is a horror game more akin to something like Call of Cthulhu than D&D. It is a game of gothic horror and dark romanticism set in a low fantasy medieval setting. In Esteren you won’t find elves or dwarves and neither will you find fireball casting wizards, instead you play as regular humans dealing not only with coping with their tough daily lives and surviving in a harsh enviroment but also with a very real and ancient supernatural threat that lurks in the shadows. Split into 3 kingdoms Shadows of Esteren’s setting of Tri-Kazel is inspired by Celtic mythology, the region of Taol-kaer being very traditional and Druidic in nature while the influence of the continent has spread to the other kingdoms with the religious zealots of the temple in Gwidre and the arcane machines and weird science of the magienists in Reizh. It’s a detailed setting, dense with opportunity but as deadly as it is beautiful.
