Barrowmaze is a giant sandbox Megadungeon created in atypical fashion. Typical dungeon layout has a top down levled path that is balanced. Barrowmaze is 1000% sandbox and lets you go anywhere at any time if you choose to and tells its story enviormentally. When your not exploring the megadungeon, you are probably exploring the Barrows on the surface above, 100+ smaller "dungeons" that are 1-5 rooms and have a shorter purpose or story tied to them. Outside of the heavy focus on dungeon crawling the party can visit and explore the local swamp, which is filled with horrible things. Crocs, Yuan Ti, Undead, Orcs, Black and Green Dragons, Bullywugs, and more. There is a large focus on rping with other adventuers, and moment to moment RP on where you stand and where you cast from. It has a pile of house rules using the "5e Hardcore" ruleset, variant resting rules (gritty realisim dmg) variant encumbrance (phb variant) and more to make it a grounded real expereince and not avengers power fantasy. Tonights session saw the party explore several rooms, looting various gravess and burial alcoves. One such room saw the skeletons within rise, because of init 2 people died outright, the barbarian with 1hp and the fighter with 2hp, the wizard fell next to a permament confusion spell until getting hit with greater restoration. Its a very old style AD&D level game. You die early, you die quickly, you die brutally, and probably to unfair odds from something you triggered. But if your character makes it you will feel like you have achieved greatness and when they end up at risk you will feel great tension over it as they survived the odds until now. we run till 11pm from 7pm each night.
