Bear with me, there’s a wall of text forthcoming…
After spending a few months of failed attempts to find a
game that felt “right” I’ve decided to try throwing myself on the auction block
instead. Worth a try, right?
I mentioned the impending wall of text, so rather than leave
these until the end, I’m going to save you the reader a few minutes and list
what I’m not looking for first.
I’ve found out the hard way that the following have been reasons that
previous games have not worked out for me.
The game is pay to play
The game is a Living World (While in theory I love
the concept, I’ve tried several and it’s never worked, mostly related to scheduling)
A majority of the group lives/breathes/eats gaming
A majority of the group are min/maxers
A group that is going to tell me how to roll up/play
my character
A group that consistently brings real world issues
into the game
The group is not 18+ (I’m pro growing the next
generation of gamers, but I don’t want to be filtering myself for this game)
So, if you’re still reading, awesome! Here’s what I’m
looking for:
Schedule/Timing:
I’d like to find an ongoing game, weekly or bi-weekly. My schedule is relatively open, weekdays
anytime between 3:30ish to 10ish (US Central) are best, weekend late
morning/afternoons can work too.
Format: Roll20/Discord. Voice or voice/video. Character sheets are
used (macros are great, but I don’t want to exclusively rely on them)
Play style: a healthy mix of social/RP and combat
is preferred. I’d like to find a
semi-casual game. I want to be invested
in my character, but I don’t want to feel like I need to be chatting/plotting
all week in between games. At least not
all the time.
Campaign Age: I’m good with either starting fresh
or filling a gap in an ongoing game. Both
have pros and cons.
System: Note this is last on the list for a
reason. The specific game isn’t as
important. I’m most familiar with
Pathfinder 1 st (a little rusty), Shadowrun 3 rd (very
rusty), Shadowrun 5 th (have made characters but haven’t actually played
yet) or D&D 5 th (most recent long-term campaign but new to it) but
have experience with several other games (see my profile for a longer list). So long as you don’t mind a newbie I’d love
to check out a game that isn’t one of the big three. My preference leans towards games with well
established rules and mechanics as opposed to free form type games, but I’m
open to at least considering anything.
Still with me? Then it’s only fair I tell you a bit about
me as a player.
Character Preferences: I’m comfortable with pretty
much any class/archetype and so comfortable with filling holes in the party. Left to my own devices I tend to lean towards
rogue/cover ops types or utility casters.
Regardless of the character, I try to find ways to make them different from
the cookie cutter somehow. The (D&D)
kender monk, the (Shadowrun) troll medic/street doc, etc.
Character creation: I don’t make characters
fast. I get invested in my characters, I
develop backstories/motivations/goals that guide me on how I’ll play him or
her. Now thanks to the aforementioned multiple
failed attempts to find a game that fits I have several character concepts that
I could modify to a new game but don’t expect me to have a character in 24
hours.
Play Style: I’m fine with anywhere on the IC/OOC
spectrum. I like rules, but I also am a
firm believer in “’Cause I’m the DM. We’ll look it up after the game”. Left unchecked my characters can trend towards
being a bit if a dick, probably a subconscious opportunity to get out all the behaviors
I can’t in the real world, but I’m well aware of it and if it doesn’t fit the
character concept, I keep it in check.
Comfort Levels: There’s really not much that will
trigger for me in character. If
appropriate to the context I’m fine with pretty much any in character behavior. Those baddies are villains for a reason,
right? Oh wait, we’re the villains? No
problem, I can be as vile as needed. In
character. Out of character I will
typically give someone the benefit of the doubt first time. If I see a pattern of inappropriate comments
(racist/phobic/hateful in general) I’ll first start making them look stupid,
and then start directly confronting them. Ask me about my bouncer days for real
world examples.

Table Dynamics: I’ve played with a wide range of
people over the years, and so long as someone doesn’t fit into one of those
types way up top we should be golden. I’m
very open to newer players, and any age range 18+ is good. I think it’s important to mention that I
consider myself an LGBTQ+ Ally. My
approach is we’re all here to play.
You’re you, I’m me, and that’s all that matters. Any slips would be due to ignorance or
accident and not intentional.
So… That was a
lot, and if you’re still here I’m impressed!
If you think I might be a potential fit with your existing or planned
game, send me a private message and we can have a conversation.
