"We fear for our lives so, we dare not set foot within the castle walls after dark!" the Lady of the land confesses, visibly shaken as she and the Lord hold an audience with you in their austere throne room. A chill runs down your spine - the cold seeping out of the ancient stone walls around you. "Please, you must help us - we can't stand this oppression any longer," the Lord beseeches your aid, describing the violent spectres that have terrorized the castle night after night. You agree to aid the Lord and Lady for the good of the land and in the name of good! The promised reward of 2000 gold pieces doesn't hurt, either. As the sun sets and the servants usher the Lord and Lady to safety beyond the castle walls, the shadows that run along the cold flagstone grow long and ominous. A sense of foreboding overtakes you as your footsteps echo off of the walls, and you keep careful watch for the reported phantoms that haunt the spartan halls. Then you see them - a procession of ghosts, clad in battered armor, marching listlessly from the bowels of the castle undercroft. You follow the somber train to the castle crypt, where you see the apparitions trudging past the exquisitely carved sarcophagi of rulers past. You trace the spectral stream to a wall of decrepit stone deep within the sepulchre as the last phantom escapes the stone and joins its brethren in their ghastly parade. With the spirits gone, you approach the near-crumbling wall. It doesn't take much effort to break through the ruined stone and collapse the dilapidated barrier. As the dust settles, you peer beyond into an ancient stairwell descending into a dark unknown. Knowing that the source of ghostly blight dwells in the abyss before you, you descend the crumbling steps to discover What Lies Beneath! What Lies Beneath is an original adventure for 5th edition D&D. This adventure is a dungeon crawl focused on combat and puzzles, and is meant for 4-6 players at level 10. We'll complete this adventure in a single session lasting approximately 4-5 hours. We'll be using a 27 point buy for stats. Players have starting class equipment, as well as 2000 gp for weapons, armor, sundries, spell components, and common magic items priced per the Discerning Merchant's Price Guide . Players may also choose two free uncommon magic items . Player inventories will be subject to DM approval. Players may use D&D official source material from Player's Handbook , Volo's Guide to Monsters , Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes , Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide , or any of the campaign or campaign companion books (e.g. Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Elemental Evil Player's Companion ).
