Get comfy, there’s a wall of text incoming. I don’t expect to get a lot of responses, but
quality is better than quantity. I’m
looking to join a group, not start a group, but if you find yourself looking
for something similar to what I am, feel free to reply to this post, maybe a GM
out there will see us all and take pity on us.
I’m a… Seasoned?
Experienced? Rusty? All of the
above? Yeah, those. It’s been a couple years since my last group broke
up, and I’ve not been having a lot of luck finding a new group. So what the hell, let’s take a slightly
different approach, throw it against the wall, and see if it sticks.
So first, a bit about me. I mean, what’s the point of you
reading more if I turn you off right away, right? I’m in my 40s, been gaming off and on (you
know how it goes once you have to start adulting…) since junior high. Started with 1 st ed AD&D and
Rollmaster/MERP. During what I like to think of as my golden era of gaming my
group, the group I compare all other groups to, primarily played 2 nd /3 rd
D&D or Sharowrun 3 rd , but we had some filler campaigns of a
variety of other systems. L5R, 7 Seas,
Vampire the Masquerade, and some others mixed in there. After that group I played Pathfinder for a
while. Most recently, I dipped my toes into the waters of 5e D&D. I’m not much of a fan, but it scratched the itch.
Playstyle wise, I’m fine with anywhere on the IC/OOC range,
although I don’t really do voices... I
like rules and mechanics, but I also am a firm believer in “ ’Cause I’m the DM.
We’ll look it up after the game”. I’m
often content to let others take the spotlight, and just step up when my set of
skills are needed. That’s not to say I’m
passive or don’t contribute, I just don’t need to be center stage very much. Left unchecked my characters can trend
towards being a bit of a dick, probably a subconscious opportunity to get out
all the behaviors I can’t in the real world, but I’m well aware of it and if it
doesn’t fit the character concept, I keep it in check. I really don’t have any content triggers, but
am respectful of those that others have.
Regardless of the campaign, I tend to invest heavily into
my character. I develop backstories/motivations/goals that guide me on how I’ll
play him or her. They often have some sort of flaw that makes them interesting,
but doesn’t break them.
If you’re still reading, Hoodie Hoo! Here’s what I’m looking for:
Who: The takeaway
here is don’t be a douchebag. The following are more details, but really if your
sole purpose is not to provide relief to those with that not so fresh feeling,
then you’re off to a good start. I’m looking for a group of mature players
(note mature does not necessarily mean old, but at least 18+) that have day jobs and a life
outside of gaming. A group that uses gaming to escape and relax for a few hours
a week. If you play ten games a week, if
you have a stream, or a blog, or... I dunno, whatever they’re called these days
(I don’t really do social media) about your gaming expertise I can respect it
but I don’t want to belly up to the table with you right now. There is one
thing that guarantees that I will immediately walk away from a group, and that
is a self proclaimed expert that feels the need to tell everyone else how to
create or run their character. By all
means offer answers when asked, but if you tell me why I’m wrong to make the
choices I make, especially because they’re not the min/max choices some message
board says are the best, I’ve got a splintery branch for you to sit and spin
on.
Based on demographics, odds are good that you will be
like me, a middle aged white guy who’s hair is drifting south and gut is
drifting out, but I would be thrilled if I found myself with a more diverse
group. I’ve found a diverse group really
enhances the game, so bonus if your plumbing, melanin levels, self identity, giggity
preferences, differ from mine. Just, you
know, don’t be a douchebag.
What: Ideal world, I’d like to find a long term
group. Either a new one forming or an
existing one that needs a new warm body.
Setting, I guess I’m open to anything.
I’m not excited about 5e, but beggars can’t be choosers. Homebrew setting=awesome. Homebrew mechanics=blargh. As the title says, I’m looking for a beer and
pretzels type group. We take the game
seriously once we start playing, but we’re here to relax. If that means we don’t actually start until
10 minutes after the schedule time because we’re bullshitting, who cares. As mentioned above I’m comfortable with any
range of in/out of character. I’m also
totally cool with any experience level. That’s
kinda the bare minimum. Frosting on the
cake would be if we had more than one DM.
After one campaign was done someone else could take over for a while and
we play a different system. Maybe try
out something new. I’ve seen several
settings out there that probably have crap for mechanics but would be fun to
play for a few months. I’m looking to be
a player right now, but down the road, after my work season quiets down a
little, I’d be willing to consider running something myself.
Where: Hey, this one is short but sweet! Discord and Roll20. Voice only or Voice and Video are fine.
When: Monday-Thursday evenings is what I’m looking
for, probably a 3-4 hour session? I’m US
Central, and work from home since the great plague. That means my availability
window could be anything from 4-10pm.
Why: Because we like you. M-O-U-S-E.
OK, if you made it this far, thanks for reading! If I sound like I might be a fit for what you’re
looking for, get in touch!
